One of two concrete Sphinx statues outside the MH deYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park. In 1912 these replaced the black granite statues that had been placed there in 1884 and taken down in 1905. The artist who created them was Arthur Putnam.

The great Sphinx at Giza. Believed to have been constructed by pharoah Khafre about 2520 BC. This photo shows one of it's hind paws and tail.

This was a bit of an exercise in frustration - except that I really didn't care if I got any decent shots at the time. This is an instance where a different lens, a flash and not the absolute middle of the day might have made this easier, but there were a bunch of these guys on the Butterfly bush yesterday.

I wasn't really doing anything else except waiting for the Bluebirds to fledge, so I turned the cave around and tried to shoot these guys for a while.

The Great Sphinx with Queops pyramid on behind

Twelve-ton, red granite Sphinx of Ramesses II, (19th Dynasty, circa 1293-1185 BCE). It was excavated from the sacred enclosure of the temple of the god Ptah at Memphis, Egypt. The sphinx, a lion with a human head, represents the power of the Egyptian king, both to protect his people and to conquer the enemies of Egypt. This statue was buried up to its shoulders; only the exposed head was attacked by windblown sand, which eroded the facial features and the royal false beard. The inscriptions on the chest and around the base give the five names of Ramesses II. His son and successor, Merenptah, added his own cartouches to the shoulders after his father's death. This sphinx, the third largest known in the world was quarried at Aswan and transported by river to the Ptah Temple at Memphis, 600 miles away.

My first large sphinx species, this guy came in two nights ago. A couple of weeks ago I got a smaller, darker sphinx species in, the Lettered, but this species here is a member of a slightly different group. He took all night in the refrigerator to calm down enough for photography. The larger the moth, the longer time it takes to go into torpor (but also the longer you have before it wakes up).

My cat, Toby, just chillin' on my bed.

the avenue of sphinxes connected the temple of luxor with the karnak temple - a distance of 3 km it was down this processional route that the statue of amun was annually marched on its way to luxor temple to be reunited with his consort mut and her son khonsu
