A Sphinx in Alexandria.

Great Sphinx of Giza - the famous half-human, half-lion statue. Was amazed that the town was only about 100m away from the Sphinx.

Sphinx of Hatshepsut

New Kingdom; Dynasty 18

Reign: Joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III

This colossal sphinx portrays the female pharaoh Hatshepsut with the body of a lion and a human head wearing a nemes headcloth and royal beard. The use of the sphinx to represent the king dates back to the Old Kingdom and the Great Sphinx of Giza. The sculptor has carefully observed the powerful muscles of the lion as contrasted to the handsome and attractive idealized face of the female pharoh. It was one of at least six granite sphinxes that stood in Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri. Smashed into many fragments at the order of Hatshepsut's nephew and successor Thutmose III and dumped in a quarry close by the beast was recovered by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition amnd reassembled. It weighs more than seven tons.

The Sphinx - a recumbent lion statue with the head of a man (actually, the head of a pharoah but in this case, the poor guy's profile has been totally marred with his nose broken off whether through acts of vandalism or the workings of nature's elements over the years).

It was built to face the east to watch the rising sun (and the return of life) each day.

Looks like it's also a good place for a lone bird to bask in some warm morning sun (look at the top of the head)!

Upper Body of a Female Sphinx

Amuq Valley, Tell Tayinat (Anatolia/Modern Turkey)

Middle or Late Bronze Age (1800-1100 BC)

"This charming female sphinx from Tell Tayinat has curling locks of hair characteristic of the Egyptian goddess Hathor, a protective diety. A hole cut into the base suggests that the sphinx was attached to another larger object, perhaps a throne. With its turned head and alert gaze, it may have exercised a protector function like the larger guardian figures, including sphinxes, that flanked doorways in palaces of Syria and Anatolia."

"Tell Ta'yinat is a low-lying ancient occupation mound in the Hatay province of southeastern Turkey about 25 kilometres from Antakya.

The site was a major urban centre during the Early Bronze Age and Iron Age and is thought likely to be the site of ancient Kunulua, the capital of the Neo-Hittite/Aramean kingdoms of Unqi and Patina. Archaeological excavations were conducted at the site by the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute during the late 1930s. One of the key finds made at the site was a temple reminiscent in plan to the descriptions of King Solomon's Temple in the Old Testament."

"We are all pawns on its board."

Wow. A Sphinx redone, Lovecraft-style. This thing is actually pretty creepy.

In-game, it can teleport its allies anywhere. Because that's just what I'd expect a twisted, mutated imaginary monster to do.

A sphinx statue (1625 - 1630) at the Hôtel de Sully mansion.

L'hôtel de Sully is an hôtel particulier of the Louis XIII style (French Renaissance). It was built between 1625 and 1630. The opulent sculptural decoration is unusual for Parisian buildings of the early Classical period.

The 17th century marked a golden age for French art in all fields. In the early part of the 17th century, late mannerist and early Baroque tendencies continued to flourish in the court of Marie de Medici and Louis XIII.

My best guess is Walnut Sphinx - Amorpha juglandis.

Both sides of the ancient street from Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple (a little under 2 miles away) were lined with hundreds of sphinxes. Today only a few have been excavated -- the rest are buried under the city of Luxor.

The Sphinx SDP Compact...and way too much rain lately.

Another view of the unnamed New Kingdom sphinx at the Memphis museum. The building in the distance on the left houses the colossal statue of Rameses II. To the left of the sphinx, there is a block yard where you can explore the decorated stone blocks on display there. To the right, a row of shops. The large standing statue of Rameses II is directly behind us (out of shot).

If you look at how dark the photo is and conclude that it's about to rain, you may be right.

"The Sphynx is grand in its loneliness; it is imposing in its magnitude; it is impressive in the mystery that hangs over its story. And there is that in the overshadowing majesty of this eternal figure of stone, with its accusing memory of the deeds of all ages, which reveals to one something of what he shall feel when he shall stand at last in the awful presence of God."
