On December 2nd, 2017 at the West Point Officers Club, located on West Point Military Academy over 250 guests attended the New York Guard and the New York Naval Militia Annual Holiday Ball, which also celebrated the Centennial of the New York which was establish in 1917. The New York Guard Acting Commander, Colonel David J Warager and the New York Naval Militia Commander, Rear Admiral “Trip” Powell addressed those in attendance. Guest remarks were made by Brigadier General Timothy LaBarge, Chief of Staff, NY Air National Guard.

 

During the evening the New York Guard presented the NCO of the Year Award to SFC Trevis Wimer, and the Solider of the Year Award to SPC William Hernandez, from the 88th Area Command, which includes New York City and Long Island. In attendance at the Gala was Dr. Joseph Giovinco, who served in the New York Guard as a Staff Sergeant at Camp Smith Training Site from 1944-1947, and then went on to service in the Florida National Guard 1948-1952. Dr. Giovinco was Presented with an Honorable Discharge from the New York Guard by Col Warager, a New Your Guard 1st Provision Regiment Medal and a Commemorative New York Guard Centennial Challenge Coin.

 

As part of the evenings festivities, New York Guard Sgt Garry Ferris performed his World War II Radio, with music from the time played during his show.

 

In addition, special Guest Actor/Producer Michael Nathanson, who currently plays DHS Agent Sam Stein in Marvel’s The Punisher, currently on Netflix, and his Wife Haley attended the New York Guard Centennial Gala. Mr. Nathanson addressed those in attendance with his remarks of thanks to all who serve, and offered congratulations to the New York Guard on behalf of the show, its star Jon Bernthal and the entire cast and crew. Mr. Nathanson’s comments were followed with a special Video Message from his co-star Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page in the series. Mr. Nathanson was presented a Commemorative New York Guard Centennial Challenge Coin by Col Warager as an appreciation to Mr. Nathanson for attending the Gala event. The evenings attendants also had the opportunity to poses with Mr. Nathanson on a special red-carpet background throughout the evening.

Spc. John Ray, a chemical quartermaster mechanic from Shreveport, La., repairs a 'gator' in Iraq. A gator is a small, all-terrain vehicle used by many units to run errands and move small pieces of equipment.

 

Ray was a youth treatment counselor before being deployed with Task Force Keystone in early 2009 and hopes to earn a degree in criminal justice when he returns to his current hometown of Grove City, Pa., in 2010.

He served with the 957th Engineer Company (Multi-Role Bridge) in Iraq in 2003. He was 30 years old when he was killed in action July 22, 2003.

Army SPC Luis Puertas was left a double amputee after an EFP explosion in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 20, 2006. SPC Puertas was the driver of the lead HUMVEE on a daily patrol near Sadar City when an unseen EFP, planted at the base of a light pole launched into the vehicle, amputating both of his legs on impact, leaving him trapped beneath the 400 pound up-armored door of the HUMVEE.

 

Miraculously, his team was able to extricate him from the wreckage, and prepare him for medevac from the scene. Airlifted to a local hospital and then to Landstuhl, Germany before finally arriving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, SPC Puertas spent 14 months enduring surgeries and rehabilitation.

 

SPC Puertas is enrolled in college, working on an associate’s degree that he hopes to eventually use in the field of prosthetics. He is looking forward to living in an accessible home where he can use his wheelchair in all areas, including the bathroom. He would like to thank those who give of themselves to assist the wounded troops returning from the war, he knows first-hand the difference it can make in their lives.
