A Lark Sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) picking bugs or grit from a gravel surface near Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The colouring of this bird matches the terrain that it blends in quite well.

Continuing on the theme of one sparrow a day this week, here is a beautiful Chipping Sparrow spotted near Nutter's Battery, Central Park, New York. They are now coming in increasing numbers...

Lark Sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) rests on a fence line while I was photographing a Western Meadowlark on a fence post. Very nice of this bird to do so on the prairie landscape south of Sceptre, Saskatchewan, Canada.

This white crowned sparrow enjoys a snack - he was playing with his food moments before, then set it down to really savor it!

Another sparrow image today. Yesterday's post featured a White-crowned Sparrow, today's species is the White-throated Sparrow.

Normally this species has a much whiter throat than the picture above shows, and that is because this one is of the 'tan-striped' variants, having a buff-on-brown face pattern instead of the typical white-on-black coloration.

White-throated Sparrows also have a yellow patch between their eyes and their beak, often seen quite clearly and is a key marker of this species. But again, the yellow on the bird above is hard to see.

They are usually found on the ground, feeding among the leaves and debris, and flitting through the bushes and ground cover.

I found this one hopping around in the mulch. It paused for two seconds to look at me, giving me a chance to fire off a couple of decent shots.

I'm not great with bird identification but I believe this is a White-crowned Sparrow. Photographed in Maryland on 5/4/21.

Species: Passer montanus.

Tree Sparrows are fairly easy to separate from House Sparrows once you have 'got your eye in'. Both male and female Tree Sparrows are of similar appearance. Tree Sparrows have a characteristic warm red-brown crown, white patches to the sides of the head and a small black cheek patch. Info:BTO.

Many thanks to people who view or comment on my photos.

A Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) poses in a meadow in Virginia. I tried something slightly different for this photo. Instead of cropping the bird close and going for a portrait shot, I kept the bird in the bottom right corner of the frame and minimized cropping. My goal with this shot was to show the bird much smaller in the frame than usual and have it stand out against the out-of-focus brush in the background.

This photos taken last month, but I saw one of these sparrows in my yard in Chester County, PA this morning.

Emigrant Lake - Jackson County - Oregon - USA

Habitat : Open Woodlands

Food : Insects

Nesting : Shrub

Behavior : Ground Forager

Conservation : Low Concern

"Like many other songbirds, the male Song Sparrow uses its song to attract mates as well as defend its territory. Laboratory studies have shown that the female Song Sparrow is attracted not just to the song itself, but to how well it reflects the ability of the male to learn. Males that used more learned components in their songs and that better matched their song tutors (the adult bird they learned their songs from) were preferred."

#356 Taken near Coulee City, Washington, USA.

Dave and I have just returned from a very pleasant week of vacation that we spent with a good friend who lives in Washington State. This is one of our first shots of a Sagebrush Sparrow.

We saw our first Sagebrush Sparrow last year only through our binoculars in the headlights of our SUV after dark on a primitive road. It was gratifying to finally see and photograph one of these handsome sparrows up close in bright sunlight.
