The thing that makes the spark that explodes the petrol in the cylinder that forces down the piston that pushes the con rod that turns the flywheel that drives the wheels of your car or your bike. I suppose this could have been a tenuous link to yesterday's prompt with all these connections.

Thank you to Shawn Shakespeare (skinny nilla) for inspiring me to learn to do snow cover (and also for the beautiful spot for this photograph). The winter version of my sparkplug lighthouse will be released in the next week and a half.

Sadly I've still no new recent photos to post, so filling in for today's guardrail pic is SR #151, the Sparkplug, at Tateville, Ky on Saturday, December 17, 1983.

Plum Beach Light (Lighthouse), built in 1899, is a sparkplug lighthouse in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

The lighthouse was built using pneumatic caisson engineering. A granite base was added in 1922. The light was deactivated in 1941 when the first Jamestown Bridge was built. The light became dilapidated until 1999 when the Friends of Plum Beach Lighthouse received ownership of the lighthouse. The lighthouse is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2003 the Plum Beach light was completely restored and was re-activated soon after.

PLEASE, NO invitations, graphics or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks.

The light was built in 1889. The 53-foot spark plug designed tower had 5 levels, two of which were keepers’ living quarters. It is one of three surviving sparkplug lights in the state. It is set in shallow waters in the Lubec Channel, 150 meters (500 ft) from the Canada “United States border.

Spring Point Ledge Light is a sparkplug lighthouse in South Portland, Maine that marks the main shipping channel into Portland Harbor. I

Sunrise at the Lubec Channel Lighthouse (aka Spark Plug) at low tide with some friends in the background — The Campobello Bridge, Mulholland Lighthouse, and Eastport, Maine, being lit up at the horizon.

This is from the 166mm (35mm equivalent) tele lens on the DJI Mavic Pro 3, which I just picked up primarily for that lens plus the new medium-tele lens that is a 70mm equivalent. Having tele lenses in the air is a huge change for me and opens up a whole new world of photo opportunities like this where the scene is compressed. At the normal wide angle (24mm equivalent lens) getting a shot with the lighthouse this big in the frame would require being a lot closer to it and the background would be very tiny.

Goodwood Revival 2017

A wonderful weekend of classic cars, racing, rain, and more Fiat 500’s than you can shake a stick at. Classic photo opportunities everywhere!

You will not find one modification to this car. No bullshit.

No bullbar. No LED light bar. No over-sized tires. No chrome wheels. No false AMG kit or body skirt. Not lowered or raised. Original sound system. Two original electronic keys. Everything just works.

The car phone became obsolete, but I found a bluetooth adapter the same size and shape of the old phone, that fits the original car phone adapter and allows me to use my Apple iPhone handsfree with the same functionality as OEM.

It was perfectly engineered by Mercedes-Benz, from the factory.

The engine is a 5.0L V-8 version 113-967, in a W211.

4-stroke, gasoline (petrol) injection

8 cylinders, with two Bosch sparkplugs per cylinder

Bore 3.82 inches or 97.00mm

Stroke 3.31 inches or 84.00mm

Displacement 302.9 cubic inches or 4966 cubic centimeters

Compression Ratio 10:1

Output 302hp/5600rpm or 225kW/5600rpm

Maximum Torque acceleration to SAE J 1349 is 339 ft.lb/2700rpm or 460Nm/2700rpm

Maximum Engine RPM 6000rpm

It takes 80.0L + 9.0L Reserve gasoline (petrol) and I only use BP 98 RON, the highest commercially-available automotive octane available, and the cleanest burning, bar none. Though an up front expensive car to acquire, it has been the cheapest car to maintain, of any of the previous 30 cars, trucks, SUVs, I have owned, since 1970.

Sadly, the car I worked so hard for and love to drive, it is an asshole magnet. So, I take it out for a drive, once a month and otherwise keep it locked in a garage. The jealous buggers and haters tend to tailgate and take a corner at an intersection in their 4X4 or muddy ute as close as they can without shearing a fender off. Recently, for example, I had one dumb bitch, who is (was) a cleaning lady at Ratho, tailgate my car so closely in her silver Holden SUV, I thought I was towing a boat. I reported her to Police -a wasted effort. Another time, I noticed while filling up at BP the drivers of two truly shitty vehicles in adjacent bays. They followed me northbound along the Midland Highway, one overtaking illegally across a median strip, to pull in front of my car then decelerate below the 80 km/h speed limit and put his brakes on, while his pal began accelerating and tailgating, then, they tried to force me over onto the roadside. I was merely driving home, at the posted speed limit. Why they felt the urge to do that, is beyond me. Trust that I am a better driver. I have over 50 years driving experience, without an accident and 36 years flying experience, with a perfect safety record. In each of these instances, I wondered, "Where are the cops when you need them?"

Pictures of the West Bank Light from on board the Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas at the beginning of our week-long cruise. The West Bank Light is a sparkplug lighthouse that dates from 1901 and is in the Lower New York Bay. It serves as the front range light with the Staten Island Lighthouse serving as the rear range. This guided ships into the Ambrose Channel. I was able to see a number of lighthouses in New York Harbor this trip. On board the Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas for the Seven Night Labadee & Puerto Plata Cruise (November 6th through 13th, 2022). The cruise embarks from Cape Liberty (Bayonne, NJ) with stops at Labadee, Haiti and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic before heading back to New York City. The itinerary changed after Hurricane Nicole canceled our planned stops.

Sadly I've still no new recent photos to post, so filling in for today's guardrail pic is a photo from March 13, 1983 of SR #151, aka the Sparkplug, at Moreland, Ky.

I was hoping for some intense sea smoke on this single digit morning but there was hardly anything, so instead here is a photo from last week with some fog rolling through Lubec when it was around 15F.

Today's bonus OARCB (old ass rivet counter boomer) mundane high sun, silver box, gravel pile, leaning, wirey, mindless wedgie!

So let's return now to those thrilling days of yesteryear and continue my never ending fetish to capture a train in a perfect NGPN (National Geographic Pristine Nature) setting.

Today Mr Peabody has set the Wayback Machine to Saturday, October 2, 1982 and SR #151, the Sparkplug, at South Danville, Ky.

Taken at the Glendale Gathering Car Show in the Glendale suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Note that the sparkplugs are disconnected although I think it was ridden to the show.

Sadly I've still no new recent photos to post, so filling in for today's local guardrail pic is SR #151, aka the Sparkplug, at SJ Tower on March 3, 1984.

This is the result of my third attempt at creating this particular image. I knew what I wanted to accomplish but the first two attempts weren't satisfactory for various reasons.

The image you see here is the result of three separate processes.

Step 1: Firstly I captured the spark plug (which is from a radio-controlled airplane and so is significantly smaller than a regular plug) and its reflection. This step required 15 separate images to be taken in a focus stack of the spark plug placed on a mirror with a black background. I then combined these 15 images in the awesome Helicon Soft Helicon Focus software. If any of you have yet to try this piece of software I positively encourage you to download the 30 day trial - it's incredible.

Step 2: I then re-focussed on the lettering of the plug, doused the mirror in methylated spirit and set light to it - taking another image and then blowing out the flames before they set light to my black background or anything else! Mrs R was out of the house when I did this bit!

Step 3: I photographed the spark from the gas hob igniter using the same macro lens.

I combined the image from Step 1 and Step 2 in Photoshop and used a layer mask to bring the deep focussed plug out from the flames. I then took the spark image and used the free transform feature of PS to manipulate it to be in the correct place, size and orientation for the reflected part of the spark plug.

The resulting compound image was then cropped, saturation of the blue flames boosted and other minor tweaks using Lightroom and Color Efex Pro.

The final image is pretty close to what I'd envisioned - I hope you like the result.

Ghost sign for a long-gone auto parts store in Brattleboro, Vermont.

I'm glad I photographed this when I did. The June 2023 Google Street View shows this sign is pretty much gone, with new windows being punched into the wall. Housing is a much better use for a building than as a gallery for a faded sign.
