Tbilisi is the capital and largest city of Georgia, located in the eastern part of the country along the banks of the Kura River. The city has a rich history that spans over 1,500 years and has been influenced by various cultures and civilizations over the centuries. The old part of Tbilisi, known for its charming architecture and unique atmosphere, is one of the most fascinating areas of the city. One of the most striking features of this area is the traditional houses with wooden balconies. These wooden balconies, often adorned with intricate carvings, are a significant element of Tbilisi's urban aesthetic and culture. This old Tbilisi, also known as the Old Town or Dzveli Tbilisi, is one of the oldest parts of the city and has a rich history dating back to the 5th century. Over the centuries, Tbilisi has been influenced by Persian, Byzantine, Arab, and Russian cultures, which is evident in its diverse architectural styles. The houses with wooden balconies are typical of Tbilisi's traditional architectural style and reflect both Georgian and Persian influences. Perched on a steep hill overlooking Tbilisi’s Old Town and the Mtkvari River, Narikala Fortress is one of the city’s most iconic and historic landmarks. Dating back to the 4th century, this ancient fortress has seen the rise and fall of empires and has been a silent guardian of Tbilisi for centuries. Narikala’s origins date back to the founding of the city itself, with the first fortifications believed to have been built by the Persians in the 4th century. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and strengthened by various ruling powers, including the Umayyads in the 7th century, the Mongols in the 12th century, and later by Georgian kings. Within Narikala’s walls, you’ll find the restored St. Nicholas Church, originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 1990s. The church’s interior is decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from Georgian history and the Bible. Visitors can reach the fortress by taking a scenic walk through the old town or by taking the modern cable car from Rike Park.

The baths in the city centre are an important historical and cultural attraction. These baths, known as the sulphur baths, have characteristic domed roofs, which are partly underground to keep the heat inside. Historically, the baths played an important role as social meeting places. People came here not only to bathe, but also to talk, relax and do business. These charming architectural elements are a must-see for anyone who wants to experience Tbilisi's rich traditions and unique heritage.

The George Washington Bridge is a double-decked suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River, connecting Fort Lee in Bergen County, New Jersey, with the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It is named after Founding Father George Washington, the first president of the United States. The George Washington Bridge is the world's busiest motor vehicle bridge, carrying a traffic volume of over 104 million vehicles in 2019, and is the world's only suspension bridge with 14 vehicular lanes.
The bridge is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bi-state government agency that operates infrastructure in the Port of New York and New Jersey. The George Washington Bridge is also informally known as the GW Bridge, the GWB, the GW, or the George,[8] and was known as the Fort Lee Bridge or Hudson River Bridge during construction. The George Washington Bridge measures 4,760 feet (1,450 m) long, and its main span is 3,500 feet (1,100 m) long. It was the longest main bridge span in the world from its 1931 opening until the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco opened in 1937.
The George Washington Bridge is an important travel corridor within the New York metropolitan area. It has an upper level that carries four lanes in each direction and a lower level with three lanes in each direction, for a total of 14 lanes of travel. The speed limit on the bridge is 45 mph (72 km/h). The bridge's upper level also carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Interstate 95 (I-95) and U.S. Route 1/9 (US 1/9, composed of US 1 and US 9) cross the river via the bridge. U.S. Route 46 (US 46), which lies entirely within New Jersey, terminates halfway across the bridge at the state border with New York. At its eastern terminus in New York City, the bridge continues onto the Trans-Manhattan Expressway (part of I-95, connecting to the Cross Bronx Expressway).
The idea of a bridge across the Hudson River was first proposed in 1906, but it was not until 1925 that the state legislatures of New York and New Jersey voted to allow for the planning and construction of such a bridge. Construction on the George Washington Bridge started in September 1927; the bridge was ceremonially dedicated on October 24, 1931, and opened to traffic the next day. The opening of the George Washington Bridge contributed to the development of Bergen County, New Jersey, in which Fort Lee is located. The upper deck was widened from six to eight lanes in 1946. The six-lane lower deck was constructed beneath the existing span from 1959 to 1962 because of increasing traffic.
A photo close to home across the Stort this evening. After been evicted from the rail station (!) I took my chances at the River Mill.

Happy New Year to everyone, and the first post of 2021, an archive image from a couple of years ago that I haven't shared on here.
Barmouth Railway Bridge in Snowdownia which spans over 800 meters across the Afon Mawddach Estuary.
Some seriously dramatic weather this day in the midst of a storm one moment, then broken sunlight, then a bit more storm and repeat. I had to wait for the bridge to be lit up while it wasn't raining, which eventually happened, and thankfully the sky was suitably dramatic at the same time. I'd always wanted to walk over this bridge since I first went over it by rail in 1988, I finally got to do it this day.
I couldn't decide about including the yacht in the compostion at the time but the more I look at it I like it in there.

This beautiful Roman aqueduct has survived for almost 2000 years. It dominates Segovia and modern life goes on, almost taking its presence for granted.
Trueman street Railway Overpass...
Near the Hospital in Brampton is a railway pedestrian crossing that spans the CN railway tracks. I found this to be an interesting spot to photograph. I liked the way the chain link fence covered the walkway and even sagged in the gaps a bit.

This picture was taken in October of 2015 not long after a major earthquake devastated this part of the world. The colors were in full force, and the harsh afternoon sun was beating down on the fall foliage bringing out their brilliance, but obscuring the looming peaks in the background. Shortly before crossing a horse and rider rode across the span, demonstrating how durable it must be. It's incredibly fortunate to have these bridges in the hard to pass locations - it would be a challenging river crossing in this rural area.

The span fully raised on the Johnson Street Bridge. Up close and in this position, it reminds me of a rocket launch gantry. To the left is the pedestrian walkway.
Wood ducks are my favorite ducks but in all these years I've never really appreciated their wing span before!.

I wanted to get more of the old railroad bridge but I was backed up on a rock about as far as I could get without falling in the river.

Suspension Bridge, Bristol
The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Avon Gorge and the River Avon, linking Clifton in Bristol to Leigh Woodsin North Somerset. Since opening in 1864, it has been a toll bridge, the income from which provides funds for its maintenance. The bridge is built to a design by William Henry Barlow and John Hawkshaw, based on an earlier design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is a grade I listed building.
The idea of building a bridge across the Avon Gorge originated in 1753. Original plans were for a stone bridge and later iterations were for a wrought iron structure. In 1831, an attempt to build Brunel's design was halted by the Bristol riots, and the revised version of his designs was built after his death and completed in 1864. Although similar in size, the bridge towers are not identical in design, the Clifton tower having side cut-outs, the Leigh tower more pointed arches atop a 110-foot (34 m) red sandstone-clad abutment. Roller-mounted "saddles" at the top of each tower allow movement of the three independent wrought iron chains on each side when loads pass over the bridge. The bridge deck is suspended by 162 vertical wrought-iron rods in 81 matching pairs.
The Clifton Bridge Company initially managed the bridge under licence from a charitable trust. The trust subsequently purchased the company shares, completing this in 1949 and took over the running of the bridge using the income from tolls to pay for maintenance. The bridge is a distinctive landmark, used as a symbol of Bristol on postcards, promotional materials, and informational web sites. It has been used as a backdrop to several films and television advertising and programmes. It has also been the venue for significant cultural events such as the first modern bungee jump in 1979, the last ever Concorde flight in 2003 and a handover of the Olympic Torch relay in 2012.
The main span is 1,120 ft and the total length is 2,021 ft, making it the longest cable-supported transit-only bridge in the world.
Fifteen seconds @ -15°C / 5°F- -the Mackinac Bridge from St. Ignace, Mackinac County.
The Mackinac Bridge spans the Straits of Mackinac and connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. It is the world’s third longest suspension bridge: total bridge length is 26,372 feet (5 miles) / 8,038 meters; suspension bridge length is 8,614 feet / 2,626 meters; distance between the towers is 3,800 feet / 1,158 meters; height of main towers is 552 feet / 168.25 meters; the bridge roadbed is 200 feet / 60.96 metres above the water at midspan; the roadbed is 54 feet / 18.45 meters wide; total length of all suspension cables is 42,000 miles / 67, 592 kilometers. The bridge was designed by David B. Steinman and built by the American Bridge Company of New York at a cost of $100 million (1957). Suspension bridge construction began in May 1954; the bridge opened for traffic on November 1, 1957. The toll bridge is part of Interstate 75 (I 75) with St. Ignace at the north end of the bridge; Mackinaw City at the south end.

A view of the new eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Elegant, beautiful, distinctive, and different are some of the words that came to mind when I set up to take this shot. The single-towered self-anchored suspension bridge is a daring design that had never been tried before on such a scale. And, the problems have been many, such as broken rods, leaks in the steel structure, cracked welds, misaligned road decks, to name a few. With all things considered I find the new bridge to be wonderful and quite aesthetically pleasing.
I took this shot from the roof of a building at the Coast Guard Station at the top of Yerba Buena Island. Access to the roof was quite easy. You just walk right onto the roof from the side of the road. No one was around when I arrived and while I was shooting. After I finished and was sitting in my car looking at the shots on my camera a person in uniform drove up and told me that I wasn't suppose to be there and to leave immediately. Just thought I would throw this tidbit in for anyone that is considering photographing from this spot.
