The model I have, bought built-up, is in shabby shape. That's fine with me. It's still a tangible reminder of the one a brother had when we were kids, and in my imagination I'd be alive inside it, walking and working, and outside of it I'd be exploring or driving a space vehicle (at least three different kinds came with the model kit). That childhood imagination experience takes on a rich quality as a later adult, and continues to fuel images and stories that find their way into my SF Sonnets and other creative outlets. Photographing this beat-up-but-still-effective-to-use model of the space station and its assorted accompanying components is a pleasure when the results look as good as this one does...

Here are Progress 1, Soyuz 28 and Salyut 6 Paper Models, created by ABC. Salyut 6, DOS-5, was a Soviet orbital space station, the eighth flown as part of the Salyut programme. Soyuz 28 (Union 28) was a 1978 Soviet manned mission to the orbiting Salyut 6 space station. It was the fourth mission to...

Space Station (ISS) and Space Shuttle Discovery (STS128), leading, flying over on September 9, 2009, just a day after undocking of the Shuttle from the ISS. They are flying west to east (right to left here) with the Shuttle just fading out as it heads into Earth's shadow at left of frame. Jupiter is bright object below the Shuttle/ISS trails. The long exposure has trailed the stars somewhat, too, in this untracked exposure.

Taken with a Canon 5D MkII camera and 15mm lens. This is a composite stack of five 30s exposures, taken at 1 second intervals (thus the gaps) at ISO640 and f/4. Trails of two other satellites and a red trail from an aircraft also in the frame. © 2009 Alan Dyer

In 2015 NASA commissioned Gamla Model Makers to develop and produce a 1:144 scale model of the International Space Station. Smaller, about 70% size of our standard 1:100 scale ISS model, this one was suppose to become a more portable and mobile version of the ISS presentation model.

Once again we re-worked the 1:100 scale 3D model, not only scaling it down, but also modifying the elements in order to compensate for smaller size and slightly lower scale resolution. We also had to modify the model so it will be able to accept all new set of magnets, internal reinforcement elements and supports, non of which was simply proportionally smaller.

As a result we developed and produced a new model of ISS, which is smaller in size, easier to handle, yet it has preserved all the features of the 1:100 scale model. The model depicts the latest 2015 configuration, including the newest elements, such as replicas of the Dragon and Cygnus spaceships as well as the BEAM - the inflatable habitat module. The model is comfortably mounted on a smaller round (not elliptical) base with a new nameplate. New, more portable transit case was developed for this model. We see a way to modify the transit case even further, to make it even more portable, possibly luggage type, and currently working in this direction.

The 1:144 scale ISS model became a success - we received the most positive feedback from our NASA customers.

We see a future for this model as it is more portable, easier to handle and cost much less than the 1:100 scale model.

This is a little Spacestation i built quite a while ago and finally got around to photograph. Its a long hexagonal tube with small extensions on the inner circle. It has a working airlock and a small cockpit. There are little boosters throughout the entire ship for steering in space. The energy for the station is generated by the 3 rotatable solarpanel-arms.

Astronaut Gerald P. Carr, commander of the Skylab 3 mission, flies the Astronaut Maneuvering Equipment M509 Experiment in the forward compartment of the Orbital Workshop of the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. This picture was taken with a hand-held 35mm Nikon camera on the 30th day of the 84-day Skylab 3 mission. The M509 experiment consists of two jet-powered astronaut-maneuvering units, a back-mounted, hand-controlled unit called the automatically stabilized maneuvering unit (ASMU), and a hand-held maneuvering unit (HHMU). Carr is holding the HHMU in his right hand. The M509 objectives are to: demonstrate AMU flying qualities and piloting capability; test and evaluate system response; and relate the data and experience gained to ground-based analysis, future AMU design requirements and projected extravehicular activity. The OWS forward compartment in which the M509 exercise was held is about 22 feet in diameter and 19 feet from top to bottom. The hatchway leading to the Airlock Module is partially visible behind Carr.

The International Space Station zipped by in this predawn event visible from an narrow band between San Quentin and the Pacific Coast. Many thanks to Phil McGrew for proposing the idea and doing the work to figure out when and where to go to catch the bright little "star" of the ISS as it rose almost straight up from the western horizon.

For details about the shot, how we calculated where to be please see my BLOG article.

NOTE: I used Photographer's Ephemeris to confirm the altitude and azimuth of the moon for this shot - it didn't calculate where the satellite would cross, of course.

Soyuz TM-14 descent module, 1992

This spacecraft made the 14th flight to the Mir space station, and was the first Soyuz mission of the Russian Federation. TM craft were used to ferry three-man cosmonaut and astronaut teams to and from Mir and the International Space Station between 1986 and 2002. Soyuz is now the only way of sending cosmonauts and astronauts to the International Space Station.

The ISS transits the Sun. You can see the center area (where the people are) and what appears to be four solar panels on each side like wings. There are actually 8 solar panels in sets of two, but they blur together.

Hey, this thing is several hundred miles away and moving at 17,000 mph, and the time window to take this picture is less than a second. You'll have to forgive me if there's a little blur :P
