Somber gray clouds hang over the Wasatch Range on the morning of January 30, 2003, as Rio Grande SD40T-2 No. 5371 leads Union Pacific’s “dirt train” past mile 607.4 between Wash and Mounds, Utah. Engineer Mel Baughman notches up the four black Tunnel Motors with a bit of smoke as the eastbound train storms by headed for the Sunnyside Branch.

once more a sunset shot of manila bay. this time the hues are a blend of blue and pink, more quiet, less dramatic, but nonetheless a fitting ending to the day.
This somber photo is one of my favorite HDRs taken during a trip to Czech Republic years ago. Karlstejn is a large Gothic castle founded 1348 CE by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor-elect and King of Bohemia. The castle served as a place for safekeeping the Imperial Regalia as well as the Bohemian/Czech crown jewels, holy relics, and other royal treasures. It is about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southwest of Prague. It is one of the most famous and most frequently visited castles in the Czech Republic

It's a somber early Spring 2019 morning in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. Signal crews had an outage in the morning to remove signals East of Altoona, including the popular steam-era signal bridge at Tipton, PA, but there was some elation as the Norfolk Southern F units were to run west over Horseshoe Curve and spin the business train before heading towards Harrisburg on the former Pennsylvania Railroad Middle Division. The freshly-repainted and renumbered F9 rebuilds are passing the doomed pot signal protecting the loop track here as AR Tower slowly rots away in the distance. By the following year the F units would be sold off in pairs to Reading & Northern and Aberdeen Carolina & Western.
Op deze sombere winterdag werd naar het Venlosebos gegaan. De ene trein die uit Duitsland moest komen, Raillogix was zeer slecht beladen en de andere RFO 189 211 was erg vertraagd. Dus na de melding uit Helmond 't Hout dat de Millingen keteltrein was gepasseerd werd er naar de bocht in het bos gelopen. Dan tegen 15u komt Railtraxx 266 009 met de lange Millingenketeltrein UN 1184 met 'n heerlijk brullend geluid de berg opgeklommen. Over enkele minuten heeft hij grensstation Kaldenkirchen (D) bereikt om vanaf daar verder Duitsland in te gaan. De eindbestemming is Millingen-Solvay am Rhein (D)

Even on a somber day Ilulissat's Disco Bay is a true wonder of the world, where, the stars of the show are icebergs and glaciers.
This was an early summer afternoon shot taken on a typical day in the arctic with menacing clouds hovering above with ridges and the parcial dirty glacial ice of a huge iceberg reflected in the bay.

On October 28th, 1906, the four mast Peter Iredale and its crew of 27 and two stowaways ran aground near the mouth of the Columbia River at what is now Stevens Point State Park in Oregon.

Op deze mistige en sombere winterdag werd toch maar even naar het Venlosebos gegaan. Dan om 10u passeert hier RFF 189 202 (Tweety) met 'n goed beladen Containertrein/Rheinhausen-Shuttle. de enige fotograaf. Over enkele ogenblikken heeft hij grensstation Kaldenkirchen bereikt en dan verder Duitsland. En gelukkig was hij op tijd uitbeeld toen NSI 193 263 met de Nightjet passeerde.
Omdat je hier in 'n uitgraving staat voelde het niet koud aan.. en hoefde ik niet te staan blauwbekken.
Zo somber als 2022 begon, zo lekker is maart qua weer tot nu toe. Helaas sluiten de "weeragenda" en de werkagenda niet altijd naadloos op elkaar aan, maar op woensdag 9 maart kon ik er toch nog even op uit trekken. Er werd wederom gehoopt op een aantal mooie omleiders op de Twente-route wegens de stremming op de Betuweroute. De afgelopen keren was het aardig druk in Twentre, maar deze dag was het met name 's middags erg rustig. Toch werden er zes goederentreinen goed voor de zon gefotografeerd.
's Ochtends werden stekken bij Holten, Notter en Wierden bezocht. In Wierden zag ik nog net op tijd de melding van de DB 193 366 "Einziganders" (nog dank daarvoor!!) en werd snel richting Zenderen gereden. Met drie minuten speling en enige zweetdruppels werd het doel toch gehaald!
Hier zien we de DBC Vectron 193 366 "Einziganders" met de lege Pon-trein 47733 Amersfoort-Osnabrück die bij Zenderen werd vastgelegd. Enkele minuten daarvoor reed de omgeleide Flandersbach-trein. Even een druk momentje waarbij de "Einziganders" toch wel de topper was. Ook bijzonder om de Pon-trein weer eens te zien die de laatste weken niet is gemeld, maar wellicht wel heeft gereden.

Somber clouds, filled with rain dominated the skies on this day’s end. Sunlight broke through a few minutes before the sun set, giving this chiaroscuro coda to this tempestuous day in the Northland.

Digging through more of my archives from the last couple of months I found a couple more that I think would look great in my photostream.
Another shot from my excursion to catch the sunrise. This one really has a more somber mood than I would usually post; as it has this ethereal quality that really speaks to the dawn and my effort to capture it.
I must say, I love the dynamic range of this camera; It really frees me up to explore the low light conditions around me. Thank you Nikon…for an excellent, affordable alternative to the mega-pixels and mega-dollar alternatives.

Er werd wederom gehoopt op een aantal mooie omleiders op de Twente-route wegens de stremming op de Betuweroute. De afgelopen keren was het aardig druk in Twentre, maar deze dag was het met name 's middags erg rustig. Toch werden er zes goederentreinen goed voor de zon gefotografeerd.

In Wierden zag ik nog net op tijd de melding van de DB 193 366 "Einziganders" (nog dank daarvoor!!) en werd snel richting Zenderen gereden. In Notter werd de DBC 189 822 gefotografeerd met een fraaie staaltrein, zowaar met weinig graffiti (scheelt mij ook weer "poetswerk"), richting Beverwijk Hoogovens. Weer fijn dat de 189 822 werd ingezet die ik persoonlijk fraaier vind dna de gebruikelijke 189's in Nederland. Deze 189 heeft in tegenstelling tot de meeste 189's die in Nederland rijden een front met een witte balk en een DB-logo in plaats van een wit vlak zonder logo.
