The wind storm on Jan. 25, 2010 revealed what is behind the green tarp I've been looking at for a number of years. Out of everybody I've asked, nobody guessed an Exxon sign. A co-worker who has lived in the area a long time says he doesn't remember an Exxon station in the area.
There are various theories why the shoes are hung from the tree.

a cheese was suspended from the top branch of the tree each year on the anniversary of Queen Victorias coronation. The villagers would then scramble to the top of the tree en masse. The first to get the cheese would win a gallon of ale from the local pub. In 1923 disaster struck during the race when lightning struck and 17 villagers died. Their shoes were retrieved and hung on the tree as a warning to others not to climb the shoe tree.
this solve piece was bolted to a pole on north avenue, and i admired it this past month many times. that is why i noticed it was gone last week. someone ripped it down and threw it into an empty lot. i saw it laying in the grass. the holes are stripped out on the back. so anyways, i've given it a home in my bathroom, which seems appropo.
