I'm a Sudoku addict. There, I said it.

 

In particular, I like to solve them in pen, and without writing down little numbers all over the place. I take pride in a clean and solved sudoku - just correct numbers in their squares.

 

Over time, I developed a straightforward set of algorithms that I step through in my mind that solve all but the hardest puzzles. Since they are just a process I go through, I found I couldn't actually verbalize them, I just knew how to look at the puzzle and find solutions. I thought it would be a fun exercise to try and program a sudoku solver, thus forcing me to be able to explain to myself the process I go through.

 

This solver is my current solution. It can't yet solve every puzzle, but it gets as far as I do without guessing. I know the next algorithm that needs to be added to make it better, but as you can imagine they get harder and harder to implement as the complexity grows, and I haven't quite got that code part figured out yet.

 

Feel free to play around with it. It has a few example puzzles built in and you can input your own. The ultimate solver (not mine), with explanations of a few dozen algorithms is here.

  

Solving the 'riddle of the rope', Mont St Michel:

 

The young monk gets up, disappears behind one of the huge pillars, to return without his white cape, he smiles at us, half winks and nods like to say, “ now’s your moment, get ready…”, he walks towards the rope I photographed earlier, carries it till it is straight under the spire, where it disappears, high up.

He takes a deep breath, a good grip, looks up and with all his force pulls it down, and then up, at last we hear the solemn tolling of the bell.

The sound reverberates through everything; you hear it in- and outside, you feel it in your body.

After about 3 minutes, he starts to slow the bell down, he‘s skilled at this, handles that rope expertly till the silence returns.

The rope is tied back, the monk returns, caped, joins the others, in silence to his place of prayer…

A quick stop motion that I made for a cube solve. Since my D5000 can make a stop motion out of maximum 100 frames, this video was limited to be this short.

So far I have never managed to set a difficult puzzle. Let us see how quickly this gets knocked out.

In this article, we are going to learn about solve quadratic equation by factoring methods. A quadratic equation is a polynomial equation of degree 2. Blipfoto post for Tuesday 24 August 2010: Problem Solved

 

On my way to work today I realised that I had completely forgot that today was my 365th Blip and I hadn't planned a special shot as I did for my 100th, 200th and 300th Blips. What an idiot...to get the whole way through the year and FORGET to plan such a big event!

 

Then as I was pondering my stupidity the roadsign that I had blipped yesterday came into view.....and I couldn't believe my eyes....PROBLEM SOLVED!! Obviously someone in the roads department must be a subscriber and had come to my rescue with a celebratory traffic sign! So I stopped, leapt out of the car and grabbed the Blip. Photo safetly in the camera I rushed home to post my miraculous Blip...then I had my doubts....surely I must have imagined the whole thing? Then I remembered the comment from Instography on yesterdays Blip pointing me to the Traffic Scotland website which shows the live text on these variable road signs...so I checked it out...and sure enought there it was, in black and white, confirmation that it was true! And we all know the Internet never lies!

 

Well now that I have my 365th Blip 'in the can' I can look back on he past year. I joined Blipfoto to improve my photography and I can honestly say that it's worked as I've come a long way since the beginning and met a lot of great people along the way (both online and in the flesh at Blipfoto events). So thanks to everyone that has made the past year so enjoyable...folks at Blipcentral and fellow blippers alike.

 

When I started this journal I was worried that I'd never be able to keep going....now I'm worried I can't stop!!!!
