Sierra Negra, large shield volcano, 7 km × 10.5 km, the largest caldera of all volcanoes (Galapagos). Perimeter whopping 30 km
The caldera is surprisingly flat. Partly only 100m deep, completely covered with lava that flowed from a fissure.
It spread quickly before solidifying. Hence the long + wide shape of the caldera.

Santa Clause, father Christmas, St Nick no matter what name he goes by; I bet you didn't know he spends spring in Durham.
The red Santa Claus uniform became popular in the late 19th century, primarily through the work of Thomas Nast, a cartoonist, and was further solidified by Coca-Cola's advertising in the 1930s. While Santa was depicted in various colors before Nast's illustrations, Nast's 1881 depiction of Santa in a red suit, often associated with the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," helped popularise the red attire. Coca-Cola's advertising campaigns featuring Santa in red and white further cemented this image in the public consciousness.

I often marvel about how, when we freeze time with a camera we are able to capture a single moment, a mere fraction of a second. In that moment, we are mining gems that would have otherwise remained concealed. Imagine if, on this day in April 2015, I had been slow on the shutter, or I had left even five minutes before. Maybe I hadn’t been out there at all. Still now, five years later, this is one of my favorite memories from my time at Brick Pond. In my mind I remember the encounter, if enshrouded in the vagueness brought on by the years in between. But this one brief exchange is magnified by its timelessness through photography. How lucky I am to have this memory, solidified by this image. April 18, 2015 Hoping that you are all safe and able to connect with your distant loved ones through telephone, social media or other means. If we keep doing the right thing, soon enough we will be back together and creating new and even more poignant moments. Don't forget to freeze a few with your camera, to relive a week, month and even five years from now. Stay safe!

The Giant's Causeway (known as Clochán an Aifir or Clochán na bhFomhórach in Irish is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres thick in places. The Giant's Causeway is today owned and managed by the National Trust and it is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland.
Some 50 to 60 million years ago during the Paleogene period, Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity, when highly fluid molten basalt intruded through chalk beds to form an extensive lava plateau.
Another image of the causeway can be seen in the first comment section. My current image was taken just to the left of the image below.
Did you know, inside the overhanging cliff behind North Falls, there are holes in the rock from when lava flowed through a forest, solidifying around trees, and burning them away. Which we can all agree, has little to do with this photograph

Fossilised Belemnite, Runswick Bay, North Yorkshire.
Belemnites lived during the periods of Earth history known as the Jurassic and Cretaceous; together, these represent a time interval of about 135 million years. The Jurassic Period began about 201 million years ago, and the Cretaceous ended about 66 million years ago.
The belemnites became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, at roughly the same time as the dinosaurs disappeared. However, we know a lot about them because they are commonly found as fossils, formed when the remains of traces of the animal became buried in sediment that later solidified into rock. Hundreds , if not thousands, of these rocky outcroppings pepper the region between Leadville, Buena Vista and Salida on the eastern flank of the Arkansas River Valley in Colorado. They are igneous outcroppings of a large geologic formation called a batholith.
A batholith is large body of igneous rock formed beneath the Earth’s surface by the intrusion and solidification of magma. It is commonly composed of coarse-grained rocks like granite with a surface exposure of 100 square km or larger.

❖ About coquina rock:
☞ “Coquina rock is a type of sedimentary rock (specifically limestone), formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of mineral and organic particles on the floor of bodies of water at the Earth's surface.
"☞ “The coquina rocks at Washington Oaks are part of the Anastasia formation —stretching from the city of St. Augustine to Palm Beach County — that was created during the Pleistocene era (12,000 - 2.5 million years ago). Lower sea levels allowed slightly acidic rainwater to dissolve calcium carbonate in millions of exposed shells. This process effectively bonded the shells to the sand, resulting in the creation of rocks that solidified over time."
☞ “One characteristic of coquina rocks is the regular, perfectly cylindrical holes in many sections of a formation, formed by erosion of rock by rainwater. These weathered formations create shallow tidal pools that support crabs, sea snails, anemones, and other small marine life."
☞ “The word 'coquina' is Spanish for 'cockle' and is the name given to Donax variabilis, a small, burrowing clam that lives in the sand just at the ocean’s edge, and is the main shell component of the rock.”
***************
🌏 “The park's ¾-mile-long formation of coquina rocks along its Atlantic Ocean shoreline is the second-largest on the east coast of North America." (The largest formation is farther south, in Jupiter, Florida, at the Blowing Rock Preserve.)

Lanzarote was probably the first Canary Island to be settled. The Phoenicians may have settled there around 1100 BC, though no material evidence survives. The Greek writers and philosophers Herodotus, Plato and Plutarch described the garden of the Hesperides, a mythic orchard at the far West of the world, which some like to identify with the Canaries.
The island has a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protected site status.
It was born through fiery eruptions and has solidified lava streams as well as extravagant rock formations. The island emerged about 15 million years ago as product of the Canary hotspot. Alfred Wegener's study of the island while visiting in 1912 showed how it fitted in with his theory of continental drift.
The island, along with others, emerged after the break-up of the African and the American continental plates. The greatest recorded eruptions occurred between 1730 and 1736 in the area now designated Timanfaya National Park.
The Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point near Punakaiki are a heavily eroded limestone area where the sea bursts through several vertical blowholes.
The foundations of the Pancake Rocks were formed 30 million years ago when minute fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed about 2 km below the surface.
Immense water pressure caused them to solidify into layers of more resistant limestone and softer, thin, mud-rich layers.
Gradually seismic action lifted the limestone above the seabed where water, wind and salt spray eroded the softer layers leaving a "pancake" like stack of harder limestone.

This is part of the Goldenhorn batholith, a large magma body underlying a volcano at one time. Now it is solidified, uplifted and exposed at the surface. Indeed, this magma body was so voluminous that it fed a super volcano with eruption greater than 1000 cubic kilometers of ash in a single eruption in the past. Not many places on earth where one can walk up to such a large pluton.

Earlier this week I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the owner of this beautiful ranch house and receiving a personal tour of this incredible home. The word “incredible” doesn’t really do it justice as every room is literally jaw dropping. It was a wonderful experience to learn about the home’s creation (5 years to build), the family history as well as the history of Marin county. Suffice to say I’m truly honored that one of my prints will be soon hanging on the wall here. It is experiences like these that further solidify my desire to shoot locally and spotlight the beauty of my local area.
Vladimir I Sviatoslavich or Volodymyr I Sviatoslavych. (958 – 15 July 1015), nicknamed the Great, was Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kyiv, and ruler of Kievan Rus' from 980 to 1015.
Vladimir's father was Prince Sviatoslav I of Kyiv of the Rurik dynasty. After the death of his father in 972, Vladimir, who was then prince of Novgorod, was forced to flee to Scandinavia in 976 after his brother Yaropolk murdered his other brother Oleg of Drelinia, becoming the sole ruler of Rus'. In Sweden, with the help of his relative Ladejarl Håkon Sigurdsson, ruler of Norway, he assembled a Varangian army and reconquered Novgorod from Yaropolk. By 980, Vladimir had consolidated the Rus' realm to the Baltic Sea and had solidified the frontiers against incursions of Bulgarians, Baltic tribes and Eastern nomads. Originally a follower of Slavic paganism, Vladimir converted to Christianity in 988 and Christianized the Kievan Rus'. Due to this act, which fundamentally altered the historical trajectory of the Rus' and led to his declaration as a saint in both Western Christianity and the Eastern Orthodox Church, Vladimir is thus also known as Saint Vladimir. Some scholars prefer Volodimer I or Volodimir I.

This is a piece of volcanic basalt rock picked up from Mount Etna when we climbed to the summit last year.
Etna basalt is blackish in colour and is formed by the slow solidification of the volcanic lava flows as they cool. These lumps are known as Scoria and are very light and full of holes or vesicles which are formed when gases that were dissolved in the magma come out of solution as it erupts, creating bubbles in the molten rock, some of which are frozen in place as the rock cools and solidifies. Most scoria is composed of glassy fragments due to the presence of melted silica and is very painful to walk on!

Western Grebes, San Luis Obispo County, California. This is mating behavior among Western and Clark's Grebes. I've read that the "rushing" grebes could be both males, competing for a female or a male and female, solidifying the pair bond. And they are the largest vertebrates able to "walk" on water, because they can take 14-20 steps per second, compared to 5-6 for a fast human. It's a kick to watch.

The Valles Caldera (or Jemez Caldera) is a 13.7-mile-wide (22.0 km) volcanic caldera in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. Hot springs, streams, fumaroles, natural gas seeps, and volcanic domes dot the caldera landscape. The highest point in the caldera is Redondo Peak, an 11,254-foot (3,430 m) resurgent lava dome located entirely within the caldera and surrounded by moat-like flows of rhyolitic solidified lavas.

Tenerife, the lava flowed to the sea in ancient times. Now solidified, the waves and the wind shape it to embrace the moon.
Iceland is dominated by igneous rocks, making up 90% of the rock volume, while only around 10% are sedimentary, with no true metamorphic rock. Most of the igneous deposits are volcanic, originating from magma spewing out onto the surface. A few formations, such as Vestrahorn shown here, are formed from plutonic rock, magma which solidified below the surface. Vestrahorn is also notable for the very long scree slopes which give it some interesting vertical layering. The beaches of Iceland are almost entirely compsed of black sand, with a few exceptions in the northwest. Here the sand is stabilized somewhat by patches of grass that keep the sand from being entirely blown away, forming little hills. (#1)
Thank you for your comments and favs- much appreciated.
There are really three ways to see Hallf Dome: from the west and south entyrances to Yosemite Park; to climb (now with reserveations) to the top, and from the valley floor. I had made reservations in 2015, but I was turned away at the "entrance" (two wire ropes to hang onto) because in the estimation of those who know better, but the times I did the four miles to get to the start, the ranger in charge told me point blank that I couldn't do the climb. And he was right. After 70, my fear of heights (7-8,000 feet) with two wires to hang onto double.
Half Dome did not split in half as many people think, and the very name implies that it might be been. But actually, it was created by erosion. Half Dome is a quartz monzonite batholith at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California. It is a well-known rock formation in the park, named for its distinct shape. One side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. It stands at nearly 8,800 feet above sea level and is composed of quartz monzonite, an igneous rock that solidified several thousand feet within the Earth. At its core are the remains of a magma chamber that cooled slowly and crystallized beneath the Earth's surface. The solidified magma chamber was then exposed and cut in half by erosion, therefore leading to the geographic name Half Dome.
Below are two shots taken a decade apart, and while I like the first the best, to see this monolith from the base is just awe inspiring. By the way, in the over 20 trips including two ten day vacations, I have only gotten clouds once (other than the shot below) and/or that was during my film days. The only disappointing thing about Yosemite (we avoided crowds of tourists and when we couldn't we'd drive through to the eastern entrance every time and starting at Mono Lake.)

Punakaiki, New Zealand. Punikaiki, New Zealand. The Pancake Rocks were formed 30 million years ago from minute fragments of dead marine creatures and plants landed on the seabed about 2 km below the surface. Immense water pressure caused the fragments to solidify in hard and soft layers. Gradually seismic action lifted the limestone above the seabed. Mildly acidic rain, wind and seawater sculpted the bizarre shapes.
Volcanic dike sorrounded by trees, this is a structure formed by magma rising into elastic cracks and solidifying.
The Giant's Causeway (Irish: Clochán an Aifir) is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and a national nature reserve by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland in 1987. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named the fourth-greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.
The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven, or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.
Much of the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is owned and managed by the National Trust. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland, receiving over 998,000 visitors in 2019. Access to the Giant's Causeway is free of charge: it is not necessary to go via the visitor centre, which charges a fee. The remainder of the site is owned by the Crown Estate and several private landowners. Wikipedia

................................................................
The lush vegetation has given way to a lunar landscape, strikingly devoid of animal and plant life. Thick white smoke emerges from the crater and dissipates with the wind. These are the solfataras, fumaroles charged with sulphur dioxide and hydrochloric acid, which are highly irritating. Take a gas mask or, failing that, a wet scarf to protect yourself from the sulphur fumes.
Descending into the sulphur pit is no longer formally forbidden (as it was when we visited, )
Men, like real slave labourers, are forced to extract blocks of sulphur weighing several kilos, in the middle of unbreathable fumaroles. Metal pipes trap and cool part of the sulphur vapours, which gradually crystallise and solidify at the end of the long pipes, so that they can be extracted. Mostly wearing simple rubber boots and with a cloth or rag in their mouths as a mask, these extreme miners fill baskets with these blocks, bring them to the surface of the crater and then go back down into the valley to finally have them weighed and earn a salary.
If you get there before sunrise, you can see strange blue lava flows that seem to trickle down the sides of the crater. It is in fact sulphur in a gaseous state, which ignites on contact with the air, offering a totally surreal spectacle, guaranteed without any trickery!

Gloopy, drippy lava making up part of the Lace Curtain on Pahvant Butte.
Pahvant Butte is a volcanic butte formed by a dormant volcano in the west-central portion of Utah. It is located in the Sevier Desert in the Pahvant Valley. This part of Utah was once covered by a huge inland freshwater sea known as Lake Bonneville. Pahvant Butte volcano erupted under the icy waters of the lake causing the hot lava to solidify in the interesting "drip" formations forming the Lace Curtain. Millard County, Utah.

✦ The Netherbind full-body tattoo is easily one of my new favorite BoM things in all of Second Life, hands down. The hypnotic, yet elegant curves of this tattoo absolutely blew me out of the water when I first saw them, and have such crisp detail and quality that I genuinely thought it was a mesh item at first! It comes in a plethora of stunning colors and best of all, it fits any body that takes the standard LLUV mapping! Talk about maximum compatibility!

Radiometric age determinations of the minette establish that these volcanic rocks solidified about 27 million years ago. Shiprock is in the northeastern part of the Navajo Volcanic Field - a field that includes intrusions and flows of minette and other unusual igneous rocks that formed about 25 million years ago.

This stoneware sculpture captures form in dynamic motion while testing the limits of ceramic technique. The result is an organic shape that seems to defy gravity and solidify movement. The core of the sculpture is sansd-glazed and covered with a matter white slip, which is reminiscent in color and texture of the stalactites found in the limestone caves of Akiyoshi Plateau in Yamaguchi Prefecture where the artist was born
Down below where the columns are is the entrance into the museum.Shot from the Mezzanine Gallery level.
I think this picture may need a bit of an explanation in order to see what's going on.
This is a telephoto shoot of Fagradalsfjalls' crater, currently erupting on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland. In the foreground there are a couple of freshly solidified lava fields and the last layer in the background is the erupting crater.
The picture was taken at twilight - to me that's the best time to watch the volcano as you have a good contrast between the "very" warm colors from the eruption and the colder colors of the falling night.
Anyway, this was taken on the evening of the 24th of July 2021. I chose a slightly lower shutter speed for this shot in order to blur the smoke from the crater just a little bit, to retain some impression of movement without burring it out completely.
This eruption is one of the most amazing things I have seen, so much so I have visited the eruption site three times over my two weeks stay in Iceland..so there will be quite a few more Volcano shots coming.

"Glass is in fact found in nature. It is formed when quartz sand melts following a sharp rise in temperature and the molten mass subsequently cools. A "solidified fluid", this is glass. [...]
Starting from the 11th century, Venice became the center of glass art in the Western world. It is above all in the production and processing of pure crystal for bottles that the master glassmakers, the so-called "Murano phioleri", reached an unmatched level of mastery and perfected the style of what would later become the refined Renaissance art in the Venetian glassmaking tradition."
