This unique camera had a special battery that could be recharged from the current produced by two top cover-mounted solar cells. Found this example dusty and disregarded in the back of a shelf at a local antique store. Have never see one of these in the wild before. 20USD.

In Sept. 2010, Walmart announced it will install solar power generating systems on 20 to 30 locations in California and Arizona in the next 12 months. The majority of these sites will utilize thin film panels as seen on the Mountain View, Calif. store.

Originally designed by British inventor Trevor Baylis to facilitate communication and education in remote parts of Africa, the radio uses solar power or can be wound up - the energy being stored in a main spring - breaking the dependence on batteries or mains power.

Crescent Dunes is a 110 megawatt solar thermal power project with 1.1 gigawatt-hours of energy storage, located near Tonopah, NV about 190 miles northwest of Las Vegas. It is the first utility-scale concentrating solar power plant with a central receiver tower and advanced molten salt energy storage technology. The project, owned by Tonopah Solar Energy, was anticipated output 500 GW·h annually.

“Solar power projects, no matter how small, have the potential to benefit the entire San Diego region,” said Cody Hooven, environmental specialist with the Port of San Diego’s Environmental Department. “Alternative (non grid-based) power, such as solar, improves air quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and is generated from a clean, renewable resource.”

The Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) recently allocated 500 MW worth of solar PV power plants to five separate developers. All the projects were allocated at less than Rs 6.00/kWh (9.2¢/kWh), the lowest tariffs for any project allocated under the Punjab solar power policy so far.

The first Women Barefoot Solar Engineers of Mauritania are installing solar panels in their villages. These African women trained for 6 months at the Barefoot College of Tilonia in Rajasthan, India. They will earn an income paid by the people in their village for maintaining the solar-powered lighting systems that they install for each house in the village.

I arrived Santa Monica a little past 7 PM and waited till people left the beach before I took a shot of this landmark. The Pacific Park Ferris Wheel has been photographed by people from all over the world and has made cameo appearances in many Hollywood movies. Unknown to me when I took this shot, the solar panels that partially block the Ferris Wheel completely power the wheel and its 160,000 LED lights. This wheel is also relatively new as the old wheel was replaced in 2008. And this new wheel costs Pacific Park a whopping $1.5 million dollars. It's so popular that around 800 people ride it every hour.

A few things about this shot~ This shot would have been better if there wasn't any structure partially blocking the wheel. And I have to admit that the timing for the red color on the wheel was by pure chance because the lights changed every second. And since this is a long exposure shot, it was impossible to predict when the wheel LED's would turn red. As I also expected, my feet got wet but I came prepared by wearing beach sandals. Thanks for the comments and faves.

IVANPAH, CALIFORNIA, APRIL 05 2013: An aerial view of Tower 1 and its heliostats at the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility. Tower 1's heliostast installation is nearly completed, and steam blow tests are taking place.

Located in the Mojave Desert 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas, The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is a solar thermal power project, currently under construction, with a planned capacity of 392 megawatts gross, enough to power approximately 140,000 houses. It will deploy 173,500 heliostat mirrors spread over approximately 3,500 acres, focusing solar energy on boilers located atop three solar power towers, generating steam to turn a conventional steam turbine. The project – owned by NRG Solar, Google and BrightSource Energy – is currently the largest solar thermal plant under construction in the world. The project is being constructed by Bechtel. And what do I see? - A solar powered picnic spot

I could not face this so point and shoot worked for me....it also makes me think of the crayon drawings made by children, with the big sun in a corner and rays spreading out in all directions. It was too powerful, even with shades on my eyes, to hold my eyes open as I framed and took this shot.

Protect your eyes...they allow you to view our beautiful planet.

Calma... calma....

Mural of musician Prince unveiled at the loading entrance to the Electric Ballroom in Camden Town, London, on the first anniversary of the musicians death. The mural was sponsored by environmental group 10:10 and shows Prince surrounded by solar panels, a clean technology which he supported through his philanthropy, paying for their installation to low income groups in the U.S.

10:10 are using the mural as part of a fundraising campaign to generate money to install solar panels for community groups in the UK. Read more about their campaign here.

A large array of solar panels at the Anheuser-Busch InBev beer plant in Cartersville, Georgia. 'Green' can be good business, apparently.

Opened in 1993, the brewery sits on 1,700 acres, with a total plant floor area of 900,000 square feet. Annual capacity is 8 million barrels per year. The brewmaster (as of the date of this photo) is Sarah Schilling.
