New solar Kenya’s first solar-powered “bubble” drier, improves bean quality and commercial value, retaining nutritious qualities before they are turned into a porridge flour. It has been donated to farmers and partners shown in a training session here at ICIPE campus in Nairobi on December 9th, as part of a project “Making Value Chains Work for Food and Nutrition Security of Vulnerable Populations in East Africa,” which aims to reach around five million small holder farmers in Uganda and Kenya benefiting 50,000 rural and urban consumers.
The project is supported by BMZ and GIZ; The CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health and CGIAR donors. It is a joint project between the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance initiative and DAPA-Linking Farmers to Markets. The project is led by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), in collaboration with The University of Hohenheim (UHOH), University of Göttingen (UGOE), Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and Ugandan National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).

Unlike most solar energy farms, this one in the Ivanpah Valley is a solar thermal plant that concentrates sunlight and then mirrors it to the 3 solar power towers. Two were out of commission at the time of the photo.
It is a controversial project said by critics to be less efficient than the standard method using solar cells. It kills (roasts) about 6000 birds a year while in flight. The two towers were out of commission due to a fire started by badly aimed solar flux. The plant is located in prime desert tortoise habitat and is very land intensive.

The families partnered with Solar XL project sponsors Bold Nebraska, 350.org, Indigenous Environmental Network, CREDO, and Oil Change International to put renewable energy directly in the pipeline’s path. Solar XL underscores the need to center solutions to climate change while rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline and resisting the expansion of the fossil fuel industry.

This is BC’s largest community-owned solar panel system, consisting of 330 panels of photovoltaic panels that generate up to 85.8 kilowatts of electricity. The Premier also took questions from students during his visit.

This was in a relatively open spot so it could work but I had an almost claustrophobic feeling in much of downtown Boston due to the gloomy canyon feeling between the skyscrapers.
I recently bought a small solar powered garden light.
I like the light patterns it makes, so I bring it in every evening.

This is Hampton Road, Bristol. A year ago this sign was lighting up every few minutes as people drove up to it at more than 20mph. When I took this picture it didn't light up at all. The traffic was steady but I doubt very much that all were driving at 20 or less.
Neat feature that the parking meter runs on solar power, but it wouldn't have hurt to hire an industrial designer
