"We don't want small-scale change. We're looking for Alberta-wide change. We're looking for solar panels on the roof of every school. We're looking for students who are being inspired by their teachers like we are, and we can only achieve these things with your help," said Leah Buchanan, a grade 11 student from Queen Elizabeth High School to Alberta's ministers of education and environment as she presented the student white paper on Climate Leadership in Alberta Schools. Perhentian's turbines harness the winds on the island as efficiently as possible. Sensors are used to analyze wind directions and speeds so that the turbine controls can initiate the turbine to "face" the wind and capture maximum power.
Optimal Power Solutions power conversion control also allows for two modes of operation, an automode (renewable energy mode) as well as a manual mode (generator only). Once the renewable energy provides a minimum of 30% the generators shut down automatically.

We didn't look solar thermal water heating in our story about super efficient water heaters because as s stand alone hot water solution, it can be expensive. Where solar thermal heating systems work are in swimming pools, buildings with heavy hot water demand and in integrated solutions such as this net-positive garage suite in Calgary, Alberta.
When Cornelius Koster built his inner city garage suite in Calgary, Alberta he installed 5.5 kilowatts of solar PV to generate electricity and 12.5 kilowatts of solar thermal collectors to supply more than enough hot water and heat for the suite. Excess energy is exported to the main house making the garage suite net-positive in terms of energy. I can't be 100% sure, but it looks like the roof of our hotel is covered with solar panels. We probably would have never noticed if we hadn't crossed to this side of the street. It sort of looks like they're sprouting plants too, but I looked on Google Maps and the rear wall of the building is fully covered with shrubby, creeping plants and vines. They probably have to trim the top, periodically.

On December 2, 2015 the City of Hutchinson switched on the largest solar installation on a brownfield site in Minnesota. Built on the site of a 1970s era city dump, the 400 kilowatt array powers the wastewater treatment plant next door, helping offset energy use for the city’s largest municipal energy consumer. Commemorative plaque for the Raj Bhavan Kolkata solar energy project. Optimal Power Synergy (OPS India) supplied design, integration and installation services for this project.
It looks fairly large, but 25 kilowatts only covers a small portion of the university's energy use. They could use some conservation measures, particularly in the library where tons of computers are left powered on, even when the building is closed. However, they have lots of extra, empty roof space if the budget allows for more solar in the future.
