Alice Springs is a member of the Australian government's Solar Cities program. Because there are about 300 days of bright sunshine annually, it's a perfect candidate. The other cities in the program are Adelaide, Townsville, Blacktown, and Central Victoria. Supposedly Perth and Coburg are in the works.

The objective of the program is " to explore how solar power, energy efficient technologies and new approaches to electricity supply and pricing can encourage the residents of Alice Springs to become energy champions and develop a sustainable energy future."

This is the first commercial installation (3.3 kw) to be installed through the program, located on the roof of Alice Springs' town council building.

The last time we were here walking, I started noticing that all of the rooftops on the south side of the lake seemed to have photovoltaic systems- some small and some relatively large. Google tells me that it is a retirement village and, according to the website of one of the installers, there are at least 77 homes with systems.

Located on the edge of the Sahara desert, in an area famous for a picturesque landscape, the Noor-Ouarzazate power complex is putting Morocco on the map as a solar superpower. It is the country's first utility-scale solar energy complex and a critical step in the Moroccan Solar Energy Program, which aims to install 2 GW of solar power by 2020. The project underlines the country’s determination to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, turn to increased use of renewable energy, and move towards a low carbon development strategy.
