Cyclone Pam, a weather event of extreme proportions, wiped out Vanuatu's infrastructure in 2015. Solar companies in Australia, represented by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), were quick to offer to lend a hand.
More than a year on, they were still working at it, and 350 committed to deliver a consignment of 600 second-hand solar panels to the islands of Efate and Tongoa to help power health clinics, homes and mobile networks. Along the way we made some big statements using the panels, spelling out a strong message calling for climate action.
It was the lead up to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23), with Fiji holding the Presidency this year, this was an important time to send a strong message about the effects of climate change on the Pacific and the need for the world to act.
Starting with a resounding “Have your Sei,” in line with the 350’s Pacific Warrior petition for action, "Solar Now", and "#StopAdani" we used the panels to spell out the the need to end fossil fuel use in Australia and around the world, and to reference our current campaign to stop the mega Adani coal mine from being being built in northern Australia.

This giant solar panel was located in Ogaki City. There is a deep reason why the soler Ark was built. There was a huge recall on Sanyo solar panel product. As a reminder and commemoration of the incident, they used the recalled products to build this giant solar ark. People who travel using Shinkansen can spot this from afar.

Enfuse HDR with post-processing. A bit over the top for an Enfuse image, probably my fault, I was having trouble with the sky which sometimes seems to be Enfuse's weak point. Skies can come out very strange. Maybe I just need more exposures.
This is the Rock Creek Regional Park solar farm on September 20th, on a beautiful fall evening just before sunset. This solar farm was built by Montgomery Parks who partnered with Standard Solar Inc. in 2015 as part of their Solar Farms Initiative project. This solar farm offsets “more than 2,500 tons of greenhouse gases annually,” (website link below) generating energy to be put into the utility grid. This photo connects to the idea of Earth being an open system where solar radiation enters and exits the system. Without this solar radiation, and life’s ability to convert it into energy, life on Earth as we know it would be non-existent. These solar panels are a great source for renewable energy and show how energy provided by the sun through solar radiation can be harnessed without having to destroy ecosystems to retrieve a limited amount of fossil fuels. Before fossil fuels were burned for energy, natural selection provided a way for some organisms to create energy from sunlight that was readily available. The same is done with these solar panels and is one way to further reach the United Nations Sustainability goal 7 of Affordable and Clean Energy. The more solar panels and renewable energy is used, the cleaner our electricity sources will be.
