A close up of a solar cell.

Al and Davey stopped by my place this afternoon. We made some progress

with the solar water distiller. Today we put wheels on it, lathed the

inside using only a hammer tacker, and put a bit of reinforcement in

place. Once we finish the lath we will mortar it and let it cure. We

have fours into it so far.

Solar Canopy

This is the largest Solar Canopy in the UK, and its performance will be closely monitored as part of a three year European research project.

The supporting structure was built by Carpenter Oak from European larch grown in a sustainably managed forest in Scotland. It resembles trees growing out of the York stone to form a forest canopy overhead, and the tilted canopy roof throws a dappled light onto the ground.

The roof is made of 250 toughened glass photovoltaic modules designed to last for 25 years. Photovoltaic (PV) or solar cells are made of a special semi-conductor material that transforms light into electricity by the “photovoltaic effect”. This effect was discovered in 1839 by Antoine Cesar Becquerel. PV cells generate direct current electricity that is usually converted into alternating current so that it can operate standard electrical equipment.

In one year the Solar Canopy will generate up to 80,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. This is sufficient to service 21 typical homes. Planet Earth Galleries will use most of the electricity generated, but any that is not used will be transferred to the Yorkshire Electricity grid.

The tilt on the roof is 5%, which is the most that the supporting structure and the buildings either side of it can accommodate.

Application:

This solar energy collector chooses proper obliquity collector accordance with different latitude of different areas. It can be applied widely such as hotel, school, army, mineral factory and so on.Different types and fields of application

Solar collectors transform solar radiation into heat and transfer that heat to a medium (water, solar fluid, or air). Then solar heat can be used for heating water, to back up heating systems or for heating swimming pools.

The use of solar heat

The heart of a solar collector is the absorber, which is usually composed of several narrow metal strips. The carrier fluid for heat transfer flows through a heat-carrying pipe, which is connected to the absorber strip. In plate-type absorbers, two sheets are sandwiched together allowing the medium to flow between the two sheets. Absorbers are typically made of copper or aluminum.

Johnny and I found this as part of what we think is a remote monitoring setup for the gas meter at one of the bar and grills we go to for lunch from time to time. My suspicion is that it's a collection of solar cells used to power the remote communications system used by the remote reporting system.

Oddly, this and the other components of the monitoring system were located very low on the side of the building, within easy reach of destructive, drunken hands.

"Another name for Solar Inverter is PVInverter. The general function of an inverter is to take current from battery and convert current (AC) to run any common load. In this case, Solar panels are made to convert direct current from a photovoltaic array into alternating current .For more information visit www.ecosmart-solar.com

The clouds were moving out of the way so we stayed where we were for the eclipse. This was a lucky decision.

Halo is the name for a family of optical phenomena produced by light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Halos can have many forms, ranging from colored or white rings to arcs and spots in the sky.

Experimenting with a solar over for the cub scouts to cook personal pizzas. In other words it has to melt cheese. I used some reflective insulation I had. It is supported by a trifold that my daughter had used for a class presentation. There is a pyrex bowl that is upside down that supports the cast iron griddle covered with a glass top. The bowl and griddle are in a turkey roasting bag. Inside the bag I maintained a temperature of 210 degrees Fahrenheit. the griddle got to just over 300 and stayed there. The cast iron griddle takes a while to heat up but maintains heat well when the sun goes behind a cloud.
