Powerhouse Program Offers Features, Versatility New Menus, Programming Language for Communication Classic

Crosstalk in various forms has long been a leading telecommunications package for power users. The latest revision, called Crosstalk Mk. 4, is a major upgrade to Crosstalk XV l that adds an easier menu interface for beginners, a programming language rivaling Basic and Pascal for advanced users, and the capability to run up to 15 different communications sessions simultaneously.
If you have been looking for more flexibility and power in your communications software, then you should look at this package.
FEATURES:
Even without its multiple session capability and programming language, Crosstalk Mk. 4 would be a real powerhouse. Its standard features include session menus: baud rates from 300 to 115,200 bps; emulation of more than a dozen commonly used terminals; support for most file transfer protocols; and a phone hook that stores communications parameters.
Despite all this power and versatility, two special features stand out. The first is the program's multitasking capability. Crosstalk Mk. 4 can run up to 15 communications sessions simultaneously, switching from one to another at a keystroke. You can display several sessions on the screen at once, each in its own window, or you can fill the screen with a single session.
Session protocols are independent, so each can have its own baud rate, terminal emulation, transfer protocol, and operating mode. This capability lets you accomplish such feats as downloading a file from the local bulletin board in session one while you search the company's remote database in session two and communicate with a mainframe via direct connection in session three — and you'll still have 12 more sessions available. If you've ever spent hours waiting for a big file tocome down the line, this feature should quicken your pulse.
The second special feature is Crosstalk Application Script Language (CASL). a complete programming language that rivals Basic and Pascal. It includes its own editor, compiler, and more than 300 commands, functions, and statements. In many ways, CASL surpasses other programming languages because of its special communications features. CASL commands include functions (math and type conversion), phone hook setup and maintenance, window control. file I/O. script control, file transfer, capturing incoming data, and string manipulation.
You create CASL programs (scripts) using either Crosstalk's editor or any other text editor, and you save coding time by using internal subroutines and by "including" (calling) other utility programs in your program. The "include- statement lets you write a program once and reuse it many times.
CASL's Compile command is a true compiler that transforms text scripts into much faster machine language files. When the compiler finds an error, it displays an error message in a window, lets you edit the source code to fix the error. then resumes the compile.
Other Crosstalk Mk. 4 features include more than 50 programmable function keys, macros that let you create new command words, and a review buffer which stores incoming information that you can examine and write to a disk file. One CASL program converts Crosstalk XVI scripts to Mk. 4 format. Another creates a "learn mode" that memorizes keystrokes, converts them into CASL commands. then stores them for reuse.
PERFORMANCE:
Crosstalk Mk. 4 has something for everyone. Beginners and non-programmers can use its menus and programmed keys to communicate with little effort. Serious users and programming enthusiasts can get fancy and create fully automatic communication systems or systems so user-friendly that even the most dedicated non-computer people in the office will be willing to use them.
The multiple sessions capability — a boon to those who telecommunicate seriously — is a real time-saver that allows quick data transfer among several computers.
Opening multiple sessions and moving between them is quick and easy. We experienced some trial and lots of error when first setting up multiple sessions (mainly because of dumb mistakes on our part) We recommend running multiple sessions with CASL scripts once you determine all the parameters.
