At the Knofeleben refuge, which has closed due to corona, we find space on these large wooden mushrooms and finally unpack our brought along 'Buchteln' (sweet rolls made of yeast dough, filled with yam) and apples. Pezi tries to hold the slipping snack box and is actively supported by Tandoori !! 😊

LITTLE BEE: *Lets wings still.* "I love Little Ladybird too, Bumble," *Smiles.* "And you of course."
BUMBLE: "Of course, Little Bee. Let me sing Little Ladybird a lullaby. Do you think you can hum along, Little Bee?"
LITTLE BEE: *Yawns and stretches.* "Yes... Bumble."
BUMBLE: *Singing.* "Hush-a-by Ladybird, here in my lap."
LITTLE BEE: *Hums.*
BUMBLE: *Sings.* "Now it grows dark, it's time for a nap."
LITTLE BEE: *Hums as eyelids lower.*
BUMBLE: *Sings.* "When your nap's over, we'll pay Daddy' a call."

The theme for "Smile on Saturday" on the 22nd of November is "on top of the fence", a theme that requires a picture of something on top of a fence - objects, plants, animals and even people are allowed for the theme, but the subject has to be on top of the fence, and not in front of, hanging from, or behind the fence! I decided that Le Petite Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood) and Le Loup Charles (Charles the Wolf) were perfect to sit atop my front fence, enjoying the late spring sunshine and my latest flush of roses! I hope you like my choice of this week’s theme and that it makes you smile!
Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petite Chaperon Rouge) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. Little Red Riding Hood is outfitted in a floral patterned cotton dress, trimmed at the hem with sparkly pink tulle. Her beautiful cape, with a lined hood, is made from red fine corduroy and it is fastened with a plum coloured tie. The outfit is complemented by striped jersey leggings, lace socks and charcoal grey velour shoes finished with satin bows . Her face and hands are made of a linen weave cotton and her beautiful long plaits are made of jersey. Little Red Riding Hood’s facial features are delicately done, with embroidered eyes and mouth and hand painted nose, freckles and rosy cheeks.
Charles the Wolf (Le Loup Charles) has been hand made by the French toy manufacturer Moulin Roty and comes from their "l était une fois" ("Once Upon a Time") collection. He wears a removable purple coat with a black furry trim and smart fur lined boots. He also has a big mouth and sharp teeth - all the better to eat you with, my dear!

GARNET: “Hullo everyone and everybear. My name is Garnet, and yesterday I came to live in my new forever home at Daddy’s house. I am very excited, pleased and grateful to be here! Do you like tea? Would you like a cup? Would you like to hear my tale? Come and join me, and I’ll pour you a nice cup of tea, and you can hear all about it…
Once upon a time, some time ago - I’m not exactly sure when - I was born in England, but I sailed across the ocean and came to live with a lovely lady in Melbourne, Australia who had a very large bear family – even bigger than Daddy’s if you can believe it – and she became my new bear Mummy. I loved living with my lovely new Mummy, and we had many, many years – I can’t quite remember exactly how many, but many – together smiling, laughing, cuddling and giving snuffly kisses to one another, and having tea parties and playing bear games with my bear family whom I also loved very much. We exchanged lots of big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses together and had many adventures. However, one day, not so long ago, my Mummy went to sleep, and she didn’t wake up, even after my bear family and I gave her big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses to awaken her. We were all so sad, and I shed many tears. My Mummy’s human daughter came and collected up all of we bears and took us back to her house. However, her house was much too small for all of us, so she asked us whether some of us would be brave enough to perhaps live with a new Mummy or Daddy somewhere else if she could find a suitable one for us. Well, having sailed across the ocean as I have, I’m not afraid of new adventures, and I am a tenacious bear, so I raised my paw and said that I would be happy to live with a new Mummy or Daddy, providing they had a lovely home, gave lots of cuddles and kisses, and had a bear family of their own that I could enjoy tea parties with and play bear games with. I have standards you know, being the fastidious and particular bear that I am! Mummy’s daughter said that she would do her utmost, and she made enquiries and took lots of lovely photographs of me to share on websites on the internet where there are pages for bear adoptions.
Now, unbeknownst to me, about six months ago, a lovely and kind lady was looking to find the perfect present for her son, who was celebrating his birthday, and she saw me on a bear adoption website. Guess who her son is? That’s right! It is Daddy! So, Daddy’s human Mummy met my Mummy’s human daughter, and they discussed Daddy as being a potentially suitable candidate for me. Once she had vetted him, Mummy’s human daughter introduced the lovely lady to me. We had a very convivial, yet also deep and frank conversation about Daddy over a nice pot of tea for me and coffee for her, as she doesn’t drink tea, only coffee - although she is English and not American, which I felt made her choice of favourite beverage rather odd. Still, it was not her, but Daddy I was wanting to know about. I asked a great many questions about him, his bear family, the kind of house he lives in and what his bear family is like and does for fun. In the end, I was satisfied that Daddy’s home would be quite suitable for me, so with many big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses, I bid farewell to my Mummy’s human daughter and those of my bear family who were staying with my Mummy’s human daughter to live or hadn’t yet set off on new adventures to live with new Mummies and Daddies, and I went home with Daddy’s Mummy.
Now, Daddy and I were supposed to be united a few weeks ago, but unfortunately, the stars did not align as I had hoped they would, and circumstances intervened. However, yesterday, on Daddy’s Mummy’s birthday, Daddy’s Mummy asked me very politely to climb into a big round red box full of soft crinkled red paper shreds, which made for quite a comfortable bed, and she tied up the box with a big red satin ribbon. I was to wait for Daddy, who was visiting his Mummy for her birthday. I had a snooze – I’m not quite sure how long for, but for a little while - but was suddenly awoken by the box moving. I heard a muffled, but kind, voice outside the box, and the sound of the ribbon being removed. Next thing you know, the lid was taken off the box and there was Daddy, smiling down at me, his dark brown eyes sparking with happiness and love! He just picked me up, swept me into his arms and gave me a big cuddle and a kiss on my muzzle, and I gave Daddy a big little bear hug and a snuffly kiss back in return! I knew from that moment that Daddy was going to be the best bear Daddy ever.
Now I am here in my new forever home, and as you can see, enjoying a nice cup of tea. It is very comfortable here, and my new bear family are so lovely, kind and loving. Everybear has made me feel so very welcome! I think I am now going to live happily ever after, here at Daddy’s house!
So now you know my tale. Would you like another cup of tea? Your cup appears empty to me, and we can’t have that! Would you like a big little bear hug and a snuffly kiss too? I’m very good at giving them, you know!”
DADDY: "Welcome, dear Garnet! Garnet is a beautiful hand made English bear given to me by my mother for my birthday after she was selected out of the collection of a former teddy bear enthusiast. Garnet is made from garnet coloured mohair plush (thus her name), with soft russet coloured suede paws and black glass eyes. The heart locket pendant about her neck is gold, and was given to her by her former Mummy. I do hope that she will be very happy living with me. She is certainly making herself at home here, as she should. I hope you will love her as much as I do!"

Since this week the secretary and his family are in the recommended self-isolation. And although the recommendation is not primarily aimed at guys like Pedro, as a real family bear he is in solidarity. But last Sunday, he wanted to go outdoors beforehand.
“It's nice having a bear about the house.” ― Michael Bond, “A Bear Called Paddington” (1958).
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" the 11th of July is "homemade" I did not need to look very far to find the perfect choice! If you follow my photostream, you will know that this chap makes regular appearances. My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt who was a very clever woman. Not that you can see it, but he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh. The reason why you can’t see my Paddington Bear’s hat or collar is because it is winter time here in Melbourne where I live, and thus to keep warm from the winter chill, Paddington is wearing a homemade hat and matching scarf made for him by the lovely mother-in-law of one of my closest friends who enjoys all the adventures Paddington and his fellow bear friends get up to! My Paddington Bear has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family, and is a homemade companion for life. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
LITTLE BEE: *Sits in pretty pink prunus blossom tree and sobs, and sobs and sobs.*
VOICE ONE NEARBY: *Quietly.* “Bumble? Bumble!”
VOICE TWO NEABY: *Equally quietly.* “What is it, Little Ladybird?”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “I hear crying, Bumble. Do you hear it too?”
BUMBLE: “I do declare, Little Ladybird. I wonder who would be crying on such a beautiful day?”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “I think it is coming from within that prunus tree over there, Bumble. I can see the blossoms trembling.”
BUMBLE: “Well, why don’t you fly up and see who it is, Little Ladybird.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Oh! Do I have to, Bumble? Couldn’t you just climb the tree and find out for yourself?”
BUMBLE: “Yes you do, Little Ladybird!” *Shocked.* “We bears, even little ladybird bears like you, and flower bears like me, have a responsibility to comfort anyone who is unhappy or crying.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Yes I know Bumble, but you also know that I am shy and scare easily. What if it is a monster in that tree? What if it is a ladybird bear eating monster, Bumble?” *Trembles.* “I’m scared.”
BUMBLE: “Oh you don’t need to be scared, Little Ladybird. There are no such things as ladybird bear eating monsters.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “But how do you know, Bumble? Have you ever met a monster before, even a non ladybird bear eating one?”
BUMBLE: “Well no, Little Ladybird, but if it is perchance one, you can fly away quickly. Listen to that sobbing. It is so heartbreakingly sad. We cannot just go by and ignore it. It is our duty to help.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Alright Bumble. I’ll try and be brave.”
BUMBLE: “Good girl, Little Ladybird. You can do it.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Flies up quietly into the prunus tree and peers through the blossoms and sees Little Bee crying in the fork of the tree. She flies back to Bumble on the ground below.*
BUMBLE: “Well done, Little Ladybird. I know you are shy and easily scared. That was very brave of you.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Thank you, Bumble.”
BUMBLE: “Well, what did you see? Who is crying in the tree, Little Ladybird?”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Well, you were right, it wasn’t a ladybird bear eating monster in the tree, Bumble. It was a little bee bear who is sobbing and sobbing and sobbing like his poor little heart is broken.”
BUMBLE: “Then we must help him, Little Ladybird!” *Walks up to tree and calls from below.* “Hullo! Hullo up there! Hullo?”
LITTLE BEE: *Sobs and sobs, then snuffles. “Hul… hullo?”
BUMBLE: “Hullo there, little bee bear. What troubles you so that you are crying?”
LITTLE BEE: “Who…” *Sniffs and snuffles.* “Who are you?” *Opens eyes wide as he spies a friendly looking golden mohair bear beneath the tree.*
BUMBLE: “I am Bumble, and this is my friend and ward, Little Ladybird.” *Points paw to Little Ladybird as she flies and lands in the tree on a branch next to Little Bee.*
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Waves paw at Little Bee, smiles shyly, then blushes pink beneath black and white mohair plush.*
BUMBLE: “Little Ladybird is a little bit shy. Who are you, little bee bear?”
LITTLE BEE: *Sniffles and wipes tears from eyes.* “I am…” *Gulps.* “Little Bee.”
BUMBLE: “Well, how do you do, Little Bee.” *Smiles in a friendly way.* “Good, well now we have the formalities out of the way, why are you crying Little Bee?”
LITTLE BEE: “Well, I am new here to this place, and… and…” *Tears well in eyes.* “And I became lost. I’m looking for Daddy Jesse’s garden. Do you know Daddy Jesse? He is very nice. He looks after a big bear family and makes them cakes and throws tea parties for them, and… and…” *Gulps back tears.* “And he gives them big cuddles and lots of soft kisses. I need to get unlost, so that I can play in his garden with the other bears at Daddy Jesse’s house, like Paddy and Scout and Rosie.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Quietly.* “Oh Bumble. He sounds like a very nice Daddy, just like the kind we are looking for.”
BUMBLE: “I’m afraid we don’t know Daddy Jesse, but I think Little Ladybird and I would like to meet him.”
LITTLE BEE: “Why…” *Snuffles.* “Why would you like to meet Daddy Jesse, Bumble?”
BUMBLE: “Well, you see, Little Ladybird and I are looking for a new home, Little Bee.”
LITTLE BEE: “Why Bumble? Why Little Ladybird? What is wrong with your house?”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Looks sad and shakes her head.*
BUMBLE: “Unfortunately, Little Bee, Little Ladybird and I recently lost our home, which was in a beautiful old oak tree in the middle of a garden of an old house. One day some awful noisy… things.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “They were monsters, Bumble.” *Trembles with fear.* “They were big, noisy monsters made of metal, with big, sharp teeth.” *Trembles more.*
BUMBLE: “Well, the monsters or whatever they were, attacked our tree and tore it out of the ground, and they built a big, ugly house of grey boxes on top of where our home was. So,” *Sighs.* “Now we are looking for a new home.”
LITTLE BEE: *Puts paw to mouth.* “Oh that is awful for you, Bumble and Little Ladybird!” *Gasps.*
LITTLE LADUBIRD: “I know, Little Bee! I was scared. I had to fly away, and Bumble ran through the undergrowth to get away.”
BUMBLE: “Perhaps, Little Ladybird and I could help you find your very nice and kind sounding Daddy Jesse and his garden, Little Bee?”
LITTLE BEE: “Oh!” *Gasps and smiles. “Oh would you? Could you?”
BUMBLE: “Yes of course we can, Little Bee! We are bears after all, so we must help everybody and everbear in distress.”
LITTLE BEE: “Claps paws in delight.*
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Shyly.* “And… and maybe your Daddy could give us a new home in his pretty garden.”
LITTLE BEE: “Oh I’m sure he would! He always says that there is always room for one more bear! Even though there are two of you, I’m sure he could find somewhere lovely for you to stay at his house.”
BUMBLE: “Then let us see if we can’t find him together, Little Bee: you, me and Little Ladybird.”
LITTLE BEE: “Oh thank you, Bumble and Little Ladybird! I feel better already!”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Smiles shyly.* “That’s good, Little Bee.”
BUMBLE: “Which way did you think you came from, Little Bee?”
LITTLE BEE: “Over there somewhere, Bumble, somewhere beyond the park and the meandering brook.”
BUMBLE: “Then that is the way I will walk, and you will fly. We can stop and rest along the way when you feel tired.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Shyly.* “I get tired quite a lot, because I am only a little girl ladybird bear, you see, Little Bee.”
LITTLE BEE: “Maybe… maybe we can hold each other’s paws for reassurance and strength, Little Ladybird.”
LITTLE LADYBIRD: *Looks down thoughtfully at her black mohair paw.* “Well, I…”
BUMBLE: “I think that is a very lovely idea, don’t you, Little Ladybird?” *Looks seriously at Little Ladybird.*
LITTLE LADYBIRD: “Oh! Oh, alright Little Bee. Thank you.”
BUMBLE: “Good! Let’s go! The first thing I need to work out is how to get over the babbling brook!”
LITTLE BEE: *Offers paw to Little Ladybird.*
BUMBLE, LITTLE LADYBIRD and LITTLE BEE: *Begin the journey looking for Daddy Jesse and his garden together.*

MALACHI: *To himself.* “Mirror, mirror that is the wall. Who is the handsomest bear of all. Of course it’s obvious that I am the handsomest bear of all. How co…”
DADDY: “Malachi! What on earth are you doing with those shards of mirror?”
MALACHI: “Well, I should have thought that was obvious, Daddy!” *Shakes head.* “I’m admiring my reflection.” *Preens.*
DADDY: “Indeed, they create a multitude of Malachis.”
MALACHI: “Well, one Malachi is hardly enough, Daddy.”
DADDY: *Quietly.* “That is debatable.”
MALACHI: “What was that, Daddy? Do stop mumbling and annunciate your words.”
DADDY: “I was just saying I was going to throw those shards of mirror into the dustbin, Malachi.”
MALACHI: “Oh no! Don’t do that, Daddy!”
DADDY: “Why ever not Malachi?”
MALACHI: “Well, I quite like being a multitude.” *Turns back to his reflection and says to himself.* “Mirror, mirror that is the wall. Who is the handsomest bear of all. Of course it’s obvious that I am the handsomest bear of all. How could anyone think otherwise?”
The theme for "Smile on Saturday" on the 18th of February is "a look in the mirror", a challenge in which a photo must contain a reflection in a real mirror.
A little over a month ago, I was using my full length piece of mirror for some photography in the garden, when a gust of wind blew it over and it shattered against the hardwood planks of my terrace. Oh what a noise it made! So, I cleaned up all the thousands of broken pieces and Hoovered up the millions of tiny slivers and shards, but I was left with a few large pieces that thanks to the backing in the mirror, did not break. I’m British, and being so, I have an inherent wish to save things that “might come in handy one day”, so I kept the four largest pieces of mirror and put them away. It seems that three of the four pieces came in very handy for Malachi to admire himself and create a multitude of Malachis… which may or may not be a good thing. I hope that you like my choice of image for the theme, and that it makes you smile!
If you follow my photostream, you may know that I collect 1:12 size miniatures, some of which have featured in past themes in the "Looking Close on Friday" and "Smile on Saturday" groups. This includes Malachi the bear. Malachi I acquired in mid-March 2020 (and mid Coronavirus) from a wonderful Melbourne stalwart toy shop: Dafel Dolls and Bears, when I went looking for a present for one of my goddaughters. Malachi is designed by Mary and hand-made by Wendy Joy in Australia. He has articulated arms and legs, and an extremely sweet face. Malachi was the name he came with, written by hand on his little tag.

Bevor die Kindergartenkinder (die mit Luis, Bärbel, Pezi und Tandoori einen Ausflug in den Grugapark unternehmen) Fotos machen, werden alle noch einmal frisiert. Milina kämmt Tivi, die wiederum Pezi bürsten will...
"Schau Milina, ich habe noch eine Blumenspange übrig." meint Bärbel.
Luis, der freilich am schnellsten fertig ist, bietet sich an, seine Freundin Sanrike zu verschönern ... 😊
Danke Kindergartenkinder für Euer Foto !
Before the Kindergarten children (who are on a trip in the Grugapark with Luis, Bärbel, Pezi and Tandoori) take photos, they all have their hair done again. Milina combs Tivi's hair, who in turn wants to brush Pezi's...
"Look Milina, I still have a flower clip left," Bärbel says.
Luis, who is the quickest to finish, offers to beautify his friend Sanrike ... 😊
Thank you Kindergartenkinder for your photo !
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! Paddy look!"
PADDY: "What is it, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Look Paddy! Roses! I haven't seen any roses since forever!"
PADDY: "Well, Spring is in the air, although it is still a bit too cold not to wear hats and scarves out of doors, Scout."
SCOUT: "These roses are soooo pretty!"
PADDY: "Oh yes, Scout! Lorraine Lee is very beautiful."
SCOUT: *Looks oddly at Paddy.* "Well, I'm sure she does, Paddy, but I wouldn't know about that, as I don't know her."
PADDY: "But of course you do, Scout. You just said that Lorraine Lee was beautiful."
SCOUT: "Oh Paddy! Are you ill?" *Puts paw to Paddy's forehead.* "Do you need to lie down?"
PADDY: "I'm feeling fine, Scout. Why do you ask?"
SCOUT: "Well, not to be rude, but when you start talking gibberish nonsense, I start to worry about your mental fac... mental facu... mental facutal..."
PADDY: "Faculties, Scout?" *Helpful.*
SCOUT: "The state of your brain, Paddy. I mean, it does come from ye olden days when the world was black and white, so I imagine you are bound to have a loose wire or screw sometime."
PADDY: "Scout!"
SCOUT: "What?!?!"
PADDY: "How many times have I told you that it is rude and bad mannerly to refer to a bear's age? Especially mine!"
SCOUT: "I'm just trying to suggest that you might have that early onset amnesia, Paddy!"
PADDY: "It's early onset dementia, Scout, and I'll have you know that my mental faculties are perfectly fine." *Nods seriously.*
SCOUT: "Then why did you say I said that a lady called Lorraine looked pretty when what I was really saying was pretty were these pretty peachy pink roses, Paddy? If that isn't early onset anesthesia, I don't know what is!"
PADDY: "Early onset dementia, Scout, and the reason why I said that is because that is what these roses are called. They are called Lorraine Lee roses."
SCOUT: "Ooooh!" *Puts paw to mouth.* "Oh that's alright then!" *Sighs with relief and cuddles Paddy.* "I'm so glad you don't have early onset Anastasia, Paddy. That would make me very, very sad if you did!"
PADDY: "It's no...." *Shakes head and cuddles Scout back.* "Oh never mind, Scout. I'm glad I don't either."
SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy?"
PADDY: "Yes Scout?"
SCOUT: "Doesn't that make it confusing for the roses?"
PADDY: "Does what make it confusing for the roses, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, being called Lorraine."
PADDY: "Why would that be confusing to the roses, Scout?"
SCOUT: "Well, when you call to one bloom and say 'Hey Lorraine!', they will all turn their heads because they are all Lorraines!"
PADDY: "I hadn't thought about that, Scout, but I suppose they must be used to it, since they have been called Lorraine Lee roses since 1924."
SCOUT: "Woooowwww Paddy! That really is ancient! That is more than one hundred years ago! That's even older than you and Daddy, Paddy!" *Looks at roses in amazement. "And yet they still look so fresh!"
The Lorraine Lee rose was bred in 1924 by Australian rose propagator Alister Clark, who named the pretty peach pink bloom after his cousin, Lorraine Lee, when she chose it as a seedling from his collection. It was designed to thrive in Australian conditions, is known for its vigorous growth and unique winter flowering, and has become one of Australia's most popular roses.
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.
Being colder here, even though spring is in the air, both Paddy and Scout are wearing hand knitted scarves and Paddy is wearing hand knitted hat by Lorna's Lovely Looks. Paddy sports a heart pin and Scout insisted on wearing a pink cupcake one, which seems most appropriate considering his perpetual grumbly tummy. Both were gifts from a good friend who is very fond of both Paddy and Scout.

My name actually is Sweety, but I am a female little bear and therefore only I was qualified for today's picture of the name Ursula!! 🐻
Ursula is of Latin origin (ursus 'bear', feminine -ula) and means 'little female bear'. It is probably a loan translation of the Celtic name Artula (Celtic artos, 'bear').

Hullo everyone and everybear! I would like to tell you the story of Nanuk. Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a bear called Nanuk. Nanuk is a Polar Bear. The Teddy Bear Orphanage in the Netherlands recently contacted my friend Mummy Marian (Marian Kloon (on and off)) who is well known for being a generous host for bears who need a home. They told her that Nanuk has been living at the Teddy Bear Orphanage for quite some time. They also told Mummy Marian that he\'s very unhappy. Sweet Nanuk was born with a rare disease: poor body temperature regulation. He\'s always cold! The Teddy Bear Orphanage were looking for someone who lives in a country where it never freezes. Mummy Marian immediately thought of me, as like her, I am well known for being a generous host and making my home available to bears who need a family. Mummy Marian felt that Australia (where I live) would be the most perfectly wonderful place for Nanuk to live: a warm country with me as his Daddy, and many bear friends to make a family for him. I considered Mummy Marian’s request, and I immediately said “yes”! I think Nanuk will be a very happy Polar Bear, living with me and all my bears. We don’t know the end of the story yet, because of course, Nanuk’s tale is only just beginning! However, I do think he will live happily ever after!
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 21st of February is "winterwear". As you can see, Nanuk is sitting by the fire on a fur throw, trying to keep warm by sipping some hot tea, whilst it snows outside. Nanuk, who was hand crocheted for me as a gift by my friend Mummy Marian (Marian Kloon (on and off)), is wearing his own beautiful moss green and grey hooded cape, trimmed with grey and silver ribbon and topped with a pompom, accessorised with two silver jingle bells. I couldn’t think of anyone… or anybear better to fit the theme for this week! I hope that Nanuk and his story make you smile!

Smile on Saturday: CREATIVE WITH TOILET PAPER
It is with great pleasure that I would like to introduce you to the latest member of my ever growing bear family...
Meet Paddington Bear!
Now, I know what you are going to say... and the answer is, yes. Yes, I do already own several other Paddington Bears, not least of all my beloved Paddington Bear (Paddy) who was a gift from my Great Aunt when I was two years old (many years ago). However, this Paddington is different, and as my friend Mummy Marian (Marian Kloon (on and off)) says: "There's always room for one more bear."
Arriving from Merrythought in Shropshire, just in time for the release of Paddington 3 in the cinemas, is Paddington - the Movie Edition!
An exceptionally charming and true to character recreation of Paddington, who is cherished around the world for his kind nature….and fondness of marmalade sandwiches! Entirely British-made, this Paddington Bear has been designed to bring a lifetime of joy and companionship, and is the ultimate memento of the Paddington movie franchise.
Beautifully hand-crafted in Merrythought’s historic Ironbridge factory, Paddington combines the finest natural materials with four generations of the very best British teddy bear making expertise. His intricate design and friendly expression accurately and beautifully capture the personality of the movie character. He is made of rich-mahogany woven mohair plush and soft wool felt. Paddington is dressed in a gold-trim pure wool felt hat, along with a replica of his iconic duffle coat, featuring wooden toggle detailing. He is finished with an endearing hand-stitched smile and accompanied by Paddington’s famous ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ luggage tag and ‘Wanted On Voyage’ leather suitcase.
Created by Merrythought as a Special Edition, Paddington - the Movie Edition is individually numbered as part of a limited worldwide release. I am fortunate enough to have number 18.

PADDY: "Hullo everyone! It has just gone midday here on New Year's Eve, as you can see by our clock! It is very nice and sunny and warm here where we live, so for this New Year's Eve, we have decided to sit outside in the garden and have tea parties, drink tea, (or in Nanuk's case special Dutch hot chocolate), read faerie tales and books about bear hugs to make us smile, play games like hide-and-seek and chasey..."
SCOUT: "And play with my new Little Red Riding Hood wooden dollies, Paddy! Don't forget them!" *Points to wooden dolls with paw.*
PADDY: "And that too, dear Scout... whilst we wait for all the fireworks. We have delicious treats to satisfy our grumbly tummies, like biscuits and cake honey and marmalade! We will play bear games whilst we wait. I know that Scout and Emmett are especially looking forward to the fireworks! I just hope they don't scare Little Ladybird, but I'm sure sitting on Bumble's lap, she will be alright. It means we are all going to stay up late tonight (past our bedtime), but Daddy says that since it is New Year's Eve, it is allowed. We are all so excited! Happy New Year"
Paddy, Scout (and Dolly), Cousin Paddington, Bogart, Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson, Danny Boy, Algie, Rosie, Garnet, Emmett, Edgar, Benjamin, Cornelia, Freddy Flock, Sapphire, Pearl, Queenie, Lilac, Little Bee, Little Ladybird, Bumble, Merrythgought Classic Paddington, Merrythought Movie Paddington, Monsieur Charles, Le Petite Chaperon Rouge, Duckie, Prince Maurice and I
would like to wish all our Flickr friends and followers a very happy New Year!
Thank you for all the interest you have shown in our photographs in 2025, and all the encouragement you have given me. Thank you for being an amazing and supportive community! We look forward to delighting you with more fun and adventures in 2026!
We hope that you find much joy and beauty in your New Year's Eve celebrations, and that 2026 is a year that is happy and bright for all of you.
Happy New Year to everybear and everyone!

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Travelling all the way from London, Cousin Paddington was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a long while. That makes me happy, as the more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.
Bogart has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend. He has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.
Rosie is Scout's cousin, because like Scout, she is a free trade knitted bear from Africa. She was made in Kenya by one of the Kenana Knitters, Martha Wanjira. She is made from home spun and dyed wool. She was a gift to me from two very dear friends, including the one who gave Scout to Paddy.
Jago was a gift from a dear friend in England. He is made of English mohair with suede paw pads and glass eyes. He is a gentle bear, kind and patient who carries an air of calm about him. He is already fitting in with everyone else very nicely.
Daisy-Maud is Jago's little sister and was made by the same friend in England who made him. She is made of German mohair with floral fabric cotton paw pads that match her pretty sunhat, and glass eyes. A sweet and loving little girl bear, she is happy to be reunited with her big brother, Jago, and enjoys being spoiled by her new Daddy.
Orson, named after the little bear constellation, was made by the same friend who made Jago and Daisy-Maud. He comes ready dressed in 'trousers' made of German mohair accessorised with embroidered braces. His paws are ultra suede and his eyes are glass. He is described as being a little bit serious minded but very friendly. He's fine once he gets to know you.
Danny Boy, made by the same friend who made Jago, Daisy-Maud and Orson, has a touch of the 'Oirish' in him with his emerald green scarf. He has an open mouth as he likes to sing and comes with his own songbook, "Irish Airs for Teddy Bears". He has a wobbly head to give him animation when he's talking to you, and is made of English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. Quite a happy-go-lucky little character....
Algie is made by the same friend in England who made Jago, Daisy-Maud, Orson and Danny Boy. He is made of sparse English mohair, has paws of ultra suede and eyes of glass. A very adventurous little boy, he loves to climb and sit on top of gates, edges of tables and chairs. He adore climbing trees and will cheekily sit there with crossed legs. He's very friendly and he loves adventures of any kind.
Cornelia, I found in an antique and vintage market quite recently. She is a vintage edition Russ Bear from their Mohair Collection. She is made of deliberately mottled mohair to give her that vintage look. One of a limited edition of 10,000, she was designed by artist Carol Hosfstad and is completely handmade.
Pearl and Sapphire are both little Russ Bears who arrived on Christmas Day 2023. They travelled along with Flock from Mama Kim's house in Alabama all the way here. Both are sweet little bears who are tenacious and cheeky, but full of love and snuffly kisses most of all.
Made by Merrythought in England, Emmett is a charming little bear, sweet and smiling, crafted from multi-tonal marl grey mohair and featuring golden velvet paws. He is accessorised with a classic tartan woollen scarf. He is number 23 or a limited worldwide edition of 200.
Handmade at Merrythought in England from warm-gold tousled mohair plush, Edgar is a cheerful companion who has terracotta pure cotton velvet paws, and wears a delightful floral cotton bow tie. He is number 2 of a limited worldwide edition of 200.
Benjamin is made by Merrythought in England too. A friendly character, he has been handmade from soft, caramel-coloured mohair plush featuring a chocolate-coloured base that beautifully complements his pure wool felt paws. He wears a traditional, satin-lined waistcoat made from the finest British tweed and secured with brass studs. He is number 110 of a limited worldwide edition of 150
Based on the famous original drawings by Peggy Fortnum of Michael Bond's famous bear, the Paddington - Classic Edition is British-made (of course) at Merrthought's historical factory and is truly timeless and designed to bring a lifetime of joy and companionship. Made in a special numbered edition, I am fortunate enough to have number 17.

Little Bee is number 3 of a limited edition of 300 issued worldwide.
Lovingly handmade in Merrythought’s historic British factory in Ironbridge, Shropshire, Little Ladybird’s creation has been inspired by the English country garden. Crafted from the finest black and white short mohair and featuring a pure wool felt ladybird ‘shell’ adorned with embroidered spots, she a pair of ‘antennae’ to finish her off. Little Ladybird is number 3 of a limited edition of 300 issued worldwide.
Lovingly handmade in Merrythought’s historic British factory in Ironbridge, Shropshire, Bumble’s creation has been inspired by the English country garden. Crafted from the finest honey-gold coloured mohair plush and wool felt, Bumble wears a removable pure wool felt ‘petal’ effect collar, secured with a forest green satin ribbon and features delicate Bumble Bee and Ladybird embroidery, which is repeated on his paws. Bumble is number 3 of a limited edition of 300 issued worldwide.
Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a bear called Nanuk. Nanuk is a Polar Bear. The Teddy Bear Orphanage in the Netherlands recently contacted my friend Mummy Marian who is well known for being a generous host for bears who need a home. They told her that Nanuk has been living at the Teddy Bear Orphanage for quite some time. They also told Mummy Marian that he's very unhappy. We don’t know the end of the story yet, because of course, Nanuk’s tale is only just beginning! However, I do think he will live happily ever after!
Bertie came to live with me on Christmas Day 2022. He was a gift from a very dear friend. He is vintage and is hand knitted with soft red dioxide wool and has chocolate brown felt pads on his paws. He has shiny black bead eyes and has his own very smart tartan bow. He tells me that he was living in an antique shop for quite a while, just looking for his forever home, which now he feels that he has. Bertie is very soft and loves cuddles, and whilst perhaps not as forthcoming as some of my other bears due to his shyness, he is very loving and caring and gives big little bear hugs and snuffly kisses beautifully.
Freddy Fox is made by Merrythought in England. I bought him, of all places, from a men’s accessory shop in Melbourne’s Block Arcade, called Mr. Wares. Freddy Fox is made of English Mohair with felt paws and glass bead eyes. He has so much charm and charisma that already he is winning hearts with anyone whom he meets, and he is kind and sweet, which makes him an ideal member of our family.
Prince Maurice is a Maileg mouse, given to me as a birthday gift by my two goddaughters. Maileg (pronounced My’lye) is a brand of charming Danish-designed toys created to inspire children’s favorite playtime stories. By bringing storybook whimsy to everyday moments, Maileg toys help children (large ones and small) explore the pure and simple wonder of imagination. Beloved for their heartwarming personalities, Maileg toys show playfulness and charm in every last detail. Theirs is a timeless world filled with beautiful accessories and settings.
Duckie I saw when I was at a Sunday market on a stall of homemade knitted and crocheted items. She caught my eye straight away with her happy, smiley face and bright colours. I think she finds life with my bears intriguing and perhaps a little confusing, however she is learning.
