Early settlers made homes under the ground or with sod bricks, tarpaper, and rough boards or whatever they could fins. Each type of housing provided shelter. Each had its drawbacks. Those who stayed built frame houses as soon as they could. Even then, women had to wash floors, walls, and furniture with kerosene to keep out the bedbugs and flies. The Museum gallery features a walk through recreation sod house.
