uch recent research has focused on understanding the structure of social networks, identifying patterns such as bridges, structural holes, etc. and on developing visualizations for these often complex entities. Yet the network itself is a conceptual topology. The key is the activity that flows along the network paths: the support offered, the information given, the gossip exchanged. Based on semaspace, the authors designed and implemented a flexible tool for the content driven exploration and visualization of a social network. Building upon a traditional force-directed network layout consisting of nodes (profiles) and edges (friend-links), the system shows the activity and the information exchange (postings in the comment box) between nodes, taking the sequence and age of the messages into account. This project serves both as an illustration of one approach to the general problem of individuated network visualization and as an example of the practical uses of such representations. In the myspace service network-only visualization methods are no longer sufficient to meaningfully represent the community structure. Numerous commercial profiles, fake/spam/celebrity profiles and tools such as automated friend adders result in a huge numbers of connections, many of which carry little information about a person's actual social ties and behavior. The average myspace user has more than 130 friends, but there are also profiles with over a million "friends". By going beyond the "skeleton" of network connectivity and looking at the flow of information between the individual actors, the authors hope to create a far more accurate portrait of online social life.

This Java applet (build with Processing) is a demonstration of "Interactive Activation and Competition" neural networks, as first described by J.L. McClelland in the following paper: McClelland, J.L. (1981). Retrieving general and specific information from stored knowledge of specifics. Proceedings of the Third Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society, 170-172. The model was a landmark illustration of how simple networks of interconnected elements (artificial neurons, so to speak) can be organized so as to form a memory system that exhibits several crucial properties of human memory. In this demo and in the original article, the model captures what someone might know about characters inspired from the 1961 musical "West Side Story", in which two gangs (the "Jets" and the "Sharks") fight for territory and overall dominance. Units, the activation level of which represents the fact that the feature they stand for is true to some degree, are organized in separate groups, each corresponding to the different possible values of a single feature, such as the name of an individual, his age, his education level, his marital status, his occupation, or the gang to which he belongs.

Networking has been made much simpler with the advent of social media. Online social networks allow individuals and groups to create profiles that can be connected with various other profiles across the network according to things such as interests.
Before the internet business owners, and the general public, listened to the radio, watched television or read newspapers to learn about what was happening in the world. With social networks, the sharing of information has been made so much simpler.

The more lines you have, the more @replies to different people you sent. If you don't appear on the graph, but know that you sent out @replies, it's because the person you sent your @reply to never sent out an @reply and so that person won't appear on the graph and unfortunately, you can't either! Interestingly, a few people only sent replies to themselves, so they do appear on the graph as a line that goes back to themselves.

Since the release of the musescore.org website at the end of September 08, the MuseScore community has grown to 2000 users. The website holds around 1500 posts and 3200 comments. It looks like a healthy community and it's going strong.

...being told a username is already in use tells me half of what I need to hack someone's account, especially worrisome given the sensitive nature of the information in Bright Kite ( knows where you are down to the foot and has your mobile phone number ). I am conflicted on this and obviously it just cries out for Open ID support.
