Snowdrifts on a frozen lake

Following a week of bitterly cold temperatures winds out of the west begin to push the frigid air out, producing mountain wave clouds in the sky and drifting snow on the frozen ponds around Boulder. Here the low angle light of the setting sun accentuates the drift patterns on the surface of Coot Lake in Boulder Colorado. Note the bit of iridescence in the clouds at the right edge of the frame.

This is how my Super Bowl Sunday started out and it went down hill from there.15" of snow and 20-30 mph sustained winds made for white-out conditions and 4' drifts. It will take days to clean up this winter "wonderland"....

I'm sorting old photos and posting a few interesting ones. This image was uploaded to Flickr on May 8, 2022.

I have been waiting weeks for the weather conditions to be just right in Girdwood. I was able to capture the changing colors of this morning sunrise in Alyeska.

In January, we were invited by our good friends to join them for showshoeing in Stowe, Vermont. On this outing, it was very cold and snowing for most of the day. When we passed this area with the lovely drifts of snow, I asked for a few minutes to photograph as I wanted to be able to remember the scenery that reminded me so much of Robert Frost's poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening".

15th February 2012

We are having very high winds and regular whiteouts today.

I took this photo before I cleared the snow for a second time this morning and it's snowing again.

So far we've had six inches of snow in two blizzards with virtually zero visibility. The main road 3 kilometres away was closed due to the heavy snow and snowdrifts.

The good news is that the weather has warmed up to zero - minus 3C.

This is from 2016. But in the winter 2023-24 we've got even more snow. Actually it's a 30 years record so far: by the timeline of 16 February only in 1994 we've got more snow than now.

Some wonderful textures in the snowdrifts with the Arnisdale and Glenelg hills and the Black Cuillin as backdrop. There's some animal tracks in the foreground which I wasn't too sure about, but given that this hill seemed to be heaving with wildlife I think it's a nice little touch.

I've written a trip report which can now be found on the BLOG

The snowdrifts are becoming huge around here!

I was driving by and could not resist getting out and walking into the field during the blizzard like conditions to capture the grid towers looking so ominous. Deliberated and settled on a monochromatic look.

I suspected this would be my point of return. It was fantastic out in Tomatin last Saturday I enjoyed the snow very much.

what a beautiful phenomenon it is when the wind blows aways the snow from the mountains

must have been a pretty rough wind up there

One of my favorite places to snowshoe is Strathcona Park at Mount Washington. We were lucky to get great weather when we when there this year, amazing amount of fresh untouched snow to explore.
