Here in Chicago we are bracing for what some are calling a "snowpocalypse" or a "snownami" given that it may be our largest snowfall on record in over 100 years. They are also predicting up to 25foot waves on Lake Michigan just a few blocks from my house. I guess we shall see.

Even though the ground is already white, I wanted to share a picture from downtown Chicago back at the beginning of January before we entered our 3-month snow cover. This little park, which still had up its holiday lights, is located on Chicago Ave, just a block off of Michigan Ave and next to one of Chicago's historic fire stations. I have always thought they should just leave these lights up all year long.

Good luck to my fellow Chicagoans the next few days, and to anyone else in the path of this storm.

I study in the coffeeshop on the 2nd floor of this building every weekday and I have for the past 5 years. Today, however, this University of Chicago building was closed along with every other one because of the 20"+ snow we received between 1:00pm Monday and sometime this morning.

I strongly recommend that you push L to view this image large and on black.

Actually, most of that filth is really wee water drops and ice. Mostly.

After putting down the camera and helping push - The officer that was driving came back around and announced on his PA that he hoped this pic would not make it to facebook:)

Leo Working the Patio Drift (7:13AM) - Third Lake, IL - 2 February 2011

This ranked as the 3rd largest winter storm in Chicago area history, behind 1967 and 1999. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service reported the official Chicago Area Total Snow Depth of 20.2" at O'Hare International Airport. The official reading for the neighboring suburb of Grayslake, IL was 25" at 6PM.

With the weather terrorists forecasting a "snownami" for the Twin Cities today and tomorrow, thought I'd fire up the way back machine and look back at another big snow. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw some pretty vicious winters in Minnesota, and evidence can be found in this shot of three ice covered Milwaukee Road F7s leading the transfer from St. Paul back to South Minneapolis Yard. The train is climbing Short Line Hill at Lexington Avenue in St. Paul on Feb. 12, 1979.

And so begins Snowmageddon.

So we survived the storm. We had some rather serious thunder snow. The thunder and lightening in the midst of the blizzard were quite impressive. Someone a few blocks from me lost power but our lights only flashed a few times. I was much more worried about the people who were stuck on Lake Shore Drive for over 9-12 hours.

This morning I went for a quick walk around the University of Chicago campus. This drift was in the Classics Quad. I encountered another drift that was taller than me, and I am going to estimate was 7feet tall at least. They are saying that this is the 3rd largest snow on record for Chicago.

More Hyde Park Chicago scenes with fallout from the Blizzard of 2011. This huge old tree is the largest tree on the Midway and I have always loved it, in almost every season, but I think you can see its character the best in the winter.

There were almost no people out on campus today when I was taking pictures. A few others were trying to make it through the mountains of snow with their cameras, but only a few people looked like they had a destination.

A campus building at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. This building is two blocks from my house.

I don't normally post so many photos in a single day, but this is one of those citywide events that people in Chicago wil talk about for decades.

A tsunami of snow about to hit our cottage!! OK, not really. The picture is upside down and that's just snow curling as it slowly slides off the steel roof.
