Todd Sharp in Steamboat Springs after riding 80 miles against the wind Ride The Rockies Day 3 Edwards to Steamboat Springs via State Bridge
This REALLY IS homework for this year's Reference Class ;-D My professor is a birder and as a pre-class assignment we had to identify a bird for him. Since I registered so late, I missed that assignment, but had my own bird to identify. He was interested in my bird and my process so here it is :-D
Facts before searching:
~ Taken in RMNP
~ Above timberline (in the tundra)
~ The bird has a pink belly. Remember there are synonyms for pink.
Search:
~ Google search for "Birds of Rocky Mountain National Park"
~ Use the Rocky Mountain bird checklist at www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/birds/chekbird/r6/rockymt.htm
~ Checking the "preferred habitat" list we see that tundra == T
~ Scroll down the page, watching the habitat column for "T" and learn that there really are not that many.
~ At every "T" look to the first column to see what the bird is.
~ Rule out the "VULTURES, HAWKS, EAGLES" category.
~ This is NOT a "White-tailed Ptarmigan" (it would be mottled to blend between the rocks and the melting snow.)
~ This is not a shore bird.
~ I know Mourning Doves. This is not one.
~ Western Kingbird?
~ Horned Lark?
~ Clark's Nutcracker?
~ This is NOT a common Raven :-P
~ Probably not a Mountain Bluebird.
~ Water Pipit?
~ Clay-colored Sparrow?
~ Vesper Sparrow?
~ Lark Bunting?
~ Savannah Sparrow?
~ Probably not a Brewer's Blackbird.
~ Rosy Finch (Rosy? As in Pink?) (also Brown-capped Rosy Finch)
~ Since the list is exhausted, plug names into a Google image search, starting with the descriptive one (Rosy Finch).
There are apparently several kinds of Rosy Finches, however, one does look like mine!
~ Narrow down with an image search for "Brown-capped Rosy Finch" and find that this looks like my little guy! :-D
Fake HDR'd from 2 exposures of the same image to brighten the bird and rocks without blowing the snow out even more. LAB technique to brighten the colors.
This gorgeous treasury was created today by Etsy's SnowInJune to herald Fall (she must have read my blog and is sick of Summer already, too!) and included my Double Sided Cayenne Red Beads.
Thank you so much, Snow!
