While in the produce section, I noticed these bottles of water in the "Natural Foods" section of Kroger. What caught my eye were the product names: TAKE US home tonight; CARRY me home; HELP US help you; LIFT US into your cart . . .
mrgreenbiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/01/vitaminwaters-empty-c...
Vitaminwater, Smartwater, Fruitwater and Vitamin Energy are all owned by Coca-Cola, which purchased Glaceau, the maker of Vitaminwater, in 2007 for $4.1 billion dollars (that’s quite a growing market for sugar water) in order to “upgrade its portfolio of noncarbonated beverages.”
I began to read the contents and had quite an eye-opening moment. Vitaminwater had “natural” ingredients like “processed crystalline fructose,” “natural” caffeine and a lot of other things I didn’t understand like deionized and/or reverse-osmosis water.
And as I did the math, I realized there were 125 calories in one of those sexy bottles, along with 32.5 grams of sugar …”natural” of course. Hmm … that’s almost what a can of Coca-Cola has.
As it turns out, the need for Coke to “upgrade” its portfolio of noncarbonated beverages was motivated in part because of two things that were happening in the market place. First, there has been a drop-off in sales of carbonated drinks like Coke and Pepsi as people aimed to get healthier. According to a Beverage Digest report that came out in March, U.S. carbonated soft drink volume fell for the fourth straight year in 2008. Coca-Cola’s soft drink volume declined 3.1 percent.
And furthermore, sales of bottled water — for Coke it is Dasani, the second-largest bottled water sold in the U.S. (PepsiCo has Aquafina, which has the largest market share) — were also dropping. A key reason: The national campaign by groups like Food and Water Watch and Corporate Accountability International to get people to switch from bottled water, which is an environmental hazard, to tap water, which is often healthier, was working.
The massive advertising effort to scare people into thinking that their tap water wasn’t healthy has been effective, fabricating the need for bottled water. The result is a huge toll on the environment. Americans use more than 50 billion disposable plastic water bottles a year.
The fact that a substantial part of the bottled-water market is shipped from thousands of miles away also creates a huge carbon footprint (think Fuji, and Pellegrino from Italy). San Francisco, Phoenix, Chicago and New York state decided to forbid their governments from spending public money to purchase bottled water. So, instead of continued growth, the bottled-water market started going south.
But Coca-Cola wasn’t about to leave all those customers to drink tap water — no profit there. With tens of millions of dollars invested in celebratory marketing, including the rapper 50 Cent, and with a message consumers wanted to hear — they were going to get healthier drinking the stuff — Coca-Cola launched a very savvy marketing effort to create a mass audience for Vitaminwater.
A key goal was to move two groups — ex-Coca-Cola addicts and reformed bottled-water drinkers — over to the hyped Vitaminwater. But the reality is they were packaging empty calories and caffeine into a slick new bottle that gives the illusion of health.
Class-Action Suit Against Vitaminwater
In January 2009 the Coca-Cola Co. was served notice of a class-action lawsuit filed over what the Center for Science in Public Interest (CSPI) says are deceptive and unsubstantiated claims on its Vitaminwater line of beverages.
“Vitaminwater is more likely to increase a regular consumer’s chances of being obese or developing diabetes,” says the CSPI.
The CSPI states that Coke markets Vitaminwater as a healthful alternative to soda by labeling its several flavors with such health buzzwords as “defense”, “rescue,” “energy” and “endurance.” It also says the company makes a wide range of dramatic claims, including that its line of drinks variously reduce the risk of chronic disease, eye disease, promote healthy joints and support optimal immune function.
CSPI Litigation Director Steve Gardner said, “Coke fears, probably correctly, that they’ll sell less soda as Americans become increasingly concerned with obesity, diabetes and other conditions linked to diets too high in sugar. Vitaminwater is Coke’s attempt to dress up soda in a physician’s white coat. Underneath, its still sugar water, albeit sugar water that costs about 10 bucks a gallon.”
The CSPI also states that Vitaminwater contains 0 to 1 percent juice, yet the names of the flavors include “Endurance Peach Mango,” “Focus Kiwi Strawberry” and “XXX Blueberry Pomegranate Acai,” when in fact, these flavors contain none of these juices.

It's heeeere!
I had seriously doubted the claim that an iPad would be a 'magical' experience. But after the kindly Apple reps gave me a complimentary bottle of SmartWater, and gave me some alone time with it, I must say... I want one.
It's crudely been described as a big iPhone - but it's a whole 'nother animal. Nimbly and beautifully built for shared media, photos, videos - deftly accessing the web, mail... and the touch keyboard is really cool. I felt right at home with the large and quick responding buttons. Actually, since I type on my iPhone vertically, it felt even more comfortable for me in the vertical position. Screen is amazingly bright, and very crisp.
iBooks is really quick and turning pages is sensitive and quick. You can even grab the edge of the page and move it around before you turn it. Very intuitive.
Notice all the words above synonymous with 'fast'? The thing is FAST. I definitely see potential for expanded use.
Flickr looks awesome on it too. Combined with the news that all Flickr videos can be rendered on iPad via HTML5? Even better.
If I had the extra cash - boom. Sold. But I have as much cash for it as I do a legitimate reason to have one...
for now...

Sign - Thieves beware.
In the last year or so, thieves have been stealing metal from railways, drains, church roofs etc. And it will cost a lot to replace.
This sign warns them that there are forensic traps in use.

It is the Pride weekend - rainbow flags are everywhere along Market Street. The parade is the next day. I am in San Francisco explicitly for the Pride festivities, and this is my first-ever visit to a major city LGBT Pride event.
And of course, I love the SmartWater ad poster featuring none other than my favorite Greek Goddess, Jennifer Aniston. I consider Aniston to be an "honorary lesbian" due to Her strong friendships with lesbians, in particular Sapphic rock goddess Melissa Etheridge, who was Aniston's wedding singer and remains best friends. Additionally, Aniston's high school best friend, Chaz Bono, went on to first become a lesbian activist before further coming out as a transgender man.

An ad van featuring the work of Vanguard ans similar operations by other Forces is currently touring the region.
Greater Manchester Police is leading the way in a new North West crackdown on armed robberies, following the Force’s major success over the past year, resulting in 33 offenders being convicted and sentenced to a total of 204 years.
These excellent results have been achieved thanks to Vanguard, GMP’s operation aimed at reducing armed robberies, and have made a significant contribution to the 58 per cent reduction in the number of cash-in-transit (CIT) attacks across the North West during 2010.
The North West will become a no-go area for armed robbers in the run up to Christmas as officers from Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and North Wales will work with the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) to safeguard commercial and financial businesses, along with CIT vehicles during their delivery and pick-up times.
“The success we’ve had in arresting and convicting so many offenders should be a warning to anyone thinking of committing this type of crime - there is no hiding place for them and they risk spending Christmas behind bars. The fact that so many key offenders have been locked up across Greater Manchester in the last year due to the successful work of Vanguard, means that the number of CIT robberies has dramatically reduced,” said Detective Chief Inspector Pat McKelvey, from Greater Manchester Police’s Vanguard team.
“However, there are still too many innocent victims suffering at the hands of criminals who do not hesitate to use violence. With Christmas approaching – traditionally one of the busiest times of year for this type of crime - we are determined to keep our communities safer by targeting, deterring and disrupting criminals who carry out CIT attacks and robberies of commercial and financial premises.”
A variety of tactics will be used to prevent these robberies, including armed police vehicles escorting high-risk security vehicles as they carry out cash deliveries; the use of overt and covert CCTV monitoring; patrol cars following cash-handling vehicles; plus all cash containers will include either Smartwater or a dye, which will be released if opened illegally.
In addition, the Force helicopter will shadow the vehicles from the air during collections or deliveries, enabling any activity to be monitored. While all North West police forces will continue to share intelligence and provide assistance for cross-border deliveries.
Detective Chief Inspector Pat McKelvey concludes: “I would like to stress that this is a devastating and often violent crime that can cause deep distress for the victims. Without key information from the public we wouldn’t be able to remove these offenders from the street. Therefore, we would ask the public to be vigilant and if anyone has any information to help us catch those responsible, please call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Vanguard is committed to making the security and commercial industries safer places to work by tackling offenders on the streets, in the courts and in our communities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GAY OLYMPIAN COMPETES TO SUPPORT TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY
Swims in Memory of Local Transgender Murder Victim at
L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Beach Classic on September 14
Playa Del Rey, CA - Openly gay Olympic swimmer Amini Fonua announced that he will be participating in the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Beach Classic on September 14 at Dockweiler Beach. At the 2012 London Olympics, Fonua competed in the Men's 100 meter breaststroke. He’ll be swimming in a friendly 2K open swim competition at the Beach Classic to champion transgender services offered by the Center.
“It saddened me to hear of the recent tragic deaths of Islan Nettles and Domonique Newburn,” said Fonua. “We cannot turn a blind eye away from our transgender family. My hope is that by participating in the Beach Classic that we not only help to educate those ignorant about transgender people, but that we raise money for services to empower and uplift our transgender brothers and sisters.”
With more than 200 participants, Beach Classic includes the Toyota Financial Services 5K Run, a 2K swim and the State Farm Beach Volleyball Tournament. In addition to swimming at the Beach Classic event, Fonua is inviting the public to join his volleyball team that will compete in the recreational division. Volleyball team members are encouraged to raise at least $125 each that will support services at the Center. Register at www.beachclassic.org – select “Team Trans Olympian.”
On August 20, transgender reality star Domonique Newburn, 31, was found brutally murdered in her home in Fontana, CA. In a separate incident, on August 23, Islan Nettles, 21, died only days after being assaulted in Brooklyn.
According to a new study by the Organization of the American States, in 2012 there were at least 265 transgender people murdered, many of them in violent killings specifically motivated by anti-trans hate.
Fonua is a graduate of Texas A&M. His journey as an openly gay athlete began when he came out in the campus newspaper to defend the school from the perception that it is a hostile environment for LGBT students. He represented Tonga at the 2012 London Olympics and was his nation's flag-bearer in the 2012 Summer Olympics Parade of Nations.
L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center provides many programs and services developed specifically to meet the needs of both MTF (male-to-female) and FTM (female-to-male) transgender people. From the Transgender Health Program that provides comprehensive health care to support groups and legal services.
For more than 40 years, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center has been building the health, advocating for the rights and enriching the lives of LGBT people. *Update*: AN engine cover has been put on my car, but it is not MINE. After taking my car to another dealer for evaluation, it appears as though they have attached an engine cover from a 1.8L Turbo BEETLE. It doesn't fit properly, and is not screwed down or attached with the proper clips. I am now in the process of trying to find a photo of an original 2003 Jetta 1.8LT engine with the original engine cover, to confirm. Read below for the whole story.
Ok, so. Today's constant stream of disappointment lasted well into the night, as I went to Springfield VW to pickup my car from their service lot.
I dropped the car off on Wednesday night, to get the cooling system checked. Both the coolant temperature sensor and the auxillary water pump had been replaced in the last 2 months, and on Monday, the temp sensor went off again- for no apparent reason. The car was not overheating. The coolant level was fine.
I called Springfield VW on Tuesday, and explained my little problem, and how- seriously, it was not funny. The sensor had JUST BEEN REPLACED- by Springfield VW, and if they thought I was going to pay the $95 diagnostic fee to get it checked out, then they were out of their goddamned minds.
The service manager I called (name omitted) flirts with female customers- calling me 'boo' at least twice in that first conversation. This would be the 3rd service manager I've worked with there, as first authorized a $600 maintentance procedure without including it in the quote he called me with, and the second treated me like an idiot when I took it in to repair the coolant sensor- and actually told me that next time I should bring my husband so it wouldn't take so long to explain everything to me (!!!!). So service manager #3 tells me to check the coolant level when the engine was cold, which I did- and lo and behold, it was low. He told me to pour in water till it reached the mark.
The 2003 VW Jetta 1.8L Turbo manual says not to add water to your coolant resevoir under any circumstances. But my service manager is telling me to. Hm. I inform him that the manual says to never add water, which he is directly telling me to ignore, and he tells me that it's fine- it's a diluted 50/50 mixture. (Actually, the manual says it's a 60/40 mixture. I do hope this man isn't mixing the coolant that goes into ANY cars cause he's doing it WRONG.) This can lead to rusting out the coolant system- this arbitrary adding of water.
I decide that, since it's a VW Service employee telling me to do it, I will- and when it rusts out, they will replace it for free. Oh yes, they will. So I add water to the line. Even after doing so, the sensor goes off again.
The next morning (Wednesday) the coolant resevoir is completely empty. I'd added a whole bottle of SmartWater the night before (my car gets the good stuff). I had to pour in another entire bottle of SmartWater, then that afternoon, added 2 small bottles of Poland Spring. WHAT?! IS MY CAR THIRSTY?! I call the aforementioned service staff member back, and we agree that I'll drop it off, and he'll check it out.
The next day, I hear from him around 3pm- the sensor went off when they drove it into the garage. They filled it with coolant (who knows WHAT the mixture was), and put it under pressure- waiting to see where it would leak from.
No leak.
They left it under pressure overnight. No leak.
Today, Friday morning, I go by the dealership after a doctor's appointment to drive it around the lot to demonstrate a clicking noise that was emitting from the undercarriage when making right turns (totally unrelated to the coolant issue- but I figured, hey- it's in the shop, might as well get it looked at since NTB can't figure out what they did to cause the clicking). It never made the noise (but it surely will start back up tomorrow), and the service member told me that the coolant system never leaked. They couldn't find anything wrong with it. So he gave me my key, and didn't charge me. I didn't even have to sign anything (shady).
This evening, my mom and I drove over to pick up the car. We moved all my stuff from her trunk into mine, then I decided to pop the hood to see where the coolant level was at NOW. It was fine- filled to the MAX line.
However, you'll notice (from this photo) that my engine cover is missing.
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
absolute worst possible day to piss me off. i appreciate that the car was inspected free of charge. i do not for the life of me believe that they found nothing wrong with it. i do believe that they found a stupid mistake and fixed it, without doing proper paperwork that would provide a papertrail of the screw up. i also believe that my MISSING ENGINE COVER is proof of just how absent minded they are.
Also, I wonder where the hell it is. Cause it's kinda big.
This is my third or fourth problem with this shop. Regional Service Manager, here I come.

Police and residents have set up a Home Watch in Irlam following a spate in vehicle crime in the area.
The scheme at Broomehouse Avenue will give residents the opportunity to discuss concerns about crime and antisocial behaviour in their area to police and PCSOs in their area. They will be kept informed of any issues affecting their community through regular meetings, email updated and telephone conversations and will act as the eyes and ears of their street. Members will also be provided with home security advice and will be able to identify problems and solutions by working alongside police, authorities and housing associations.
PCSO Mark Fitzgerald from the Salford West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Home Watch is a vital link in helping us reassure communities and fight crime. By having the scheme in the community we are able to build greater links and break down barriers.”
The residents that joined the scheme were also presented with Smartwater kits to securely mark their property. Smartwater is a property marking spray that uses chemically enhanced water which contains a unique forensic fingerprint that glows under ultraviolet light.
Signs have also been put up to show any perpetrators that the area is part of the Home Watch scheme.
Home Watch coordinator, Frances Henry, said: “A good Home Watch scheme only works well if the police and community are working proactively together and that is exactly the case here. This new scheme has helped create links with likeminded people from the community. It has helped in community cohesion and has resulted in new friendships being formed with neighbours.”
PCSO Fitzgerald said: “This is just one of a number of schemes that I have helped to set up in the area. In an ideal world I would like to see one on every street as they help bring the community together and give people a sense of ownership over their area.
“Home Watch is one of the most active ways residents can tackle the issues that affect the community most and improve the quality of life for everyone.
“Members of the public who join the scheme will not only see an improvement in their own home security, because we provide advice and devices to help them stay safe, but they will also see relations with their neighbours improve as they stand together stop people who commit crimes or behave in an antisocial manner.
“If you wish to be a Home Watch Coordinator please contact your local neighbourhood policing team who will be more than pleased to welcome you into the process."

Special Constables inspect a Scrap Metal Dealer during Operation Vision.
Metal theft is a growing problem for the UK. During the past six months there has been a marked rise in the number of thefts with railways, utilities substations, businesses, houses and even road grids and manhole covers being targeted by criminals.
This increase is due to the rising prices paid for scrap metal which are now reaching all time highs on world markets. Police forces are reacting to this, together with a variety of industries, to find ways to tackle the problem.
Bedfordshire Police regularly inspect scrap metal dealers in the county. The force works with the British Metal Recycling Association (BMRA) and the local council during such inspections. The majority of metal thieves look to make money by selling their stolen metal to these businesses, but dealers are unaware that the metal is stolen and can find themselves out of pocket when checks carried out by police result in the material being seized.
By working with the BMRA and council officials, the dealers can fully understand the legal implications of such transactions and we can stop them from unwittingly taking in stolen metal. This in turn, reduces the opportunities for thieves to make money.
Chief Insp Neill Waring said the price of scrap lead is still high, and reminded do-it-yourself enthusiasts and traders to ensure equipment is stored at night and access to any scaffolding is properly restricted.
Some ways to help protect lead include:
• Coating it with anti-climb paint. It does not degrade the lead, but will make it very messy and difficult for a thief to remove. The paint is non-drying and marks clothing and skin, often helping the police to identify offenders.
• Forensic marking helps identify stolen metal and enables police to trace it back to the owner. It has resulted in the successful conviction of thieves. Products available include SmartWater, Red Web and Selecta DNA Grease.
• Check your roof regularly. The earlier you report a theft the more chance there is of finding the stolen metal – particularly if it is marked.
• Regularly check the perimeter security of your home or site. Limit access, particularly for vehicles, but maintain the natural surveillance provided by neighbouring premises or routes.
• Consider security lighting, CCTV and roof /drive alarms.
• If lead or copper is due for replacement, consider modern alternatives that are less attractive for thieves.
“Most project managers and builders are extremely security minded but with the price of lead so high we would just like to remind everyone, including the DIY enthusiast, about the importance of removing at night, or protecting, anything that could be used as a climbing aid.
“Double-check all materials and tools are securely put away after work, rather than left on site or in the back of a van, and that tools are security marked with a product like SmartWater. Today all prisoners who come into our custody suites are routinely scanned to establish whether they have come into contact with it.
“Bedfordshire Police are doing all they can to deter lead theft and residents can help by keeping an eye on building sites and contacting us if they see anything suspicious.”
For further information and crime prevention advice, call the police on the non-emergency phone number 101, or text 07786 200011. You can also call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111

Gen Art world premiere screening of "Cocaine Cowboys" at the Colony Theatre with an after party at Snatch Night Club in Miami Beach, FL on October 18, 2006.
The cocaine trade of the 70s and 80s had an indelible impact on contemporary Miami. Smugglers and distributors forever changed a once sleepy retirement community into one of the world's most glamorous hot spots, the epicenter of a $20 billion annual business fed by Colombia's Medellin cartel. By the early 80s, Miami's tripled homicide rate had made it the murder capital of the country, for which a Time cover story dubbed the city "Paradise Lost."
With "Cocaine Cowboys," filmmaker Billy Corben - whose first feature "Raw Deal: A Question of Consent," caused a sensation at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival - paints a dazzling portrait of a cultural explosion that still echoes as Hollywood myth, evidenced by the latest manifestation, NBC/Universal's "Miami Vice," (opened July 28th). Composer of the original "Miami Vice" theme, Jan Hammer, provides the score.

I saw someone do something like this on Flickr where they had glass bottles in the back of different colors. I took four SmartWater water bottles and took off stickers. I then put in different colors of Mio in each bottle. I put three wine glasses filled with water in front of the bottles to distort the various colors. I put a gap in each water bottle to add more white to the colors. I took this photo in the studio because it would give me the best lighting. For editing, I removed much of the glares, messed with the hues, boosted saturation, boosted vibrance, increased curves, and increased levels.
To answer this week's question, "How can an image emphasize colors more than the subjects that create those colors," the colors are very basic which gives a very simplistic/minimalist feel. The distortion of colors in this photo is what makes it interesting.
