Janus-head 'screen' by Tom Barker & Hank Haeusler [displayed in Sydney Smartlight festival May-June '09] here simulated in DAB stairwell. We've been preparing a bid for the development of modular poly-media pixels that can be structurally configured in different ways for teaching interaction design, situated media and architecture. This builds on the research of Hank M. Haeusler (media façades), Tom Barker (autonomous pixels, patent pending) and Kirsty Beilharz (information design and sonic interaction). The idea is to take the programmable, autonomous pixel and give it spatial sound and responsiveness to its environment and pervasive devices so that multidimensional media façades become much more socially aware, and content design is real-time and user-centred. The suspendable, stackable infrastructure enables distributed, walk-through immersive experiences, as well as the usual remote or privileged view encountered with media Façades and 3D voxel systems.
