Thymelicus sylvestris

A startling change to the quality of light which has prevailed over about the last 10 days with exceedingly glum, misty conditions ruining even the most determined wish to go out and take some winter shots in reasonable conditions. Even at the moderate altitude where I live, there have been several days when visibility was less than 100m; I guess one can't complain as this is the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness', but by gum it was good to see blue sky and some weak sunlight illuminating the working in these pictures from today; the 1Q05 Doncaster West Yard to Ipswich C.S.D. (Cobham & Stoke d'Aabernon?), working. The thin-cloud covered sun was off to the right and the cutting along this ancient woodland site where sits the now, disused Victorian Cemetery, just off to the right in the top picture; the ground is steeply graded here as it falls away to the upper Don valley, also off to the right; hence the rise on the bridge in the background. In charge as the set comes up the grade from the direction of the old Sheffield Victoria station site, is DRS, Direct Rail Services, class 37, 37402 a (lengthy) named locomotive, 'Stephen Middlemore 23.12.1954-8.6.2013', to give it its full title. The 'clag' and cutting are glowing in the suffused sunlight and I am happy the pictures turned out not to bad as inspection on the viewfinder at the time gave me the impression they were very good; never sure about portrait mode, have to say I favour landscape and in 2 parts to give that overall feeling of 'the story' which tends to be curtailed in the vertically oriented shots... The set rattled past with no where near as much effort as that required by EM1 BoBo coal trains climbing the Worsborough bank from Wath, the grade here is around 1 in 100 and with this load 300 tonnes or so, I guess the loco is well within its capability. The going away shots show the narrowness of the cutting which used to accommodate two electrified lines and all the associated paraphernalia; now a single track, this is the old down line, up to the TATA Steelworks at Stocksbridge. IN rear is the 2nd unit, 37605; glowing in the low sun, yellow light on yellow panel.. The small concrete posts at the side of the line a testament to the line's 'modern' installation, when electrified and opened in 1954...

Bock, Minnesota, on MN 23 between Duluth and St. Cloud. Just an average old building, but the later afternoon light was fantastic. I was also struck by the consistency of the peeling paint.

Here is most of an email I received from someone who found this image:

I was happy to discover your photograph of an old building ("Small Engine Repair") in Bock, MN, my hometown (it doesn't get much Internet exposure!). I left the area in 1967, but grew up there, until I was 18. In the late 50's, the building you shot was a "Pure Oil" gas station, operated by my since deceased brother-in-law, Paul Bergman. I helped him paint it (possibly the last coat of paint it received J). Bock was named after the "Boock" brothers' lumber mill, when the surrounding stands of white pine were harvested in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's, when waves of mostly Scandinavian immigrants farmed the virgin soils, it boasted a hotel, a bank, livery stable, creamery, a couple of churches (Lutheran and Evangelical Free), grocery stores and bars. Currently, it is locally (and sadly) known as hosting a topless bar and a remarkably well attended 4 th of July parade (thousands!).

Yes the sky was that blue in the Alps today. The fall is normally a bit bigger, but my, it's warm and dry this November in Switzerland. The fall is just above the mountain village of Lungern, Canton Obwalden. The water flows into a small mountain lake, the Lungerner See. In my set: Dan's Swiss Autumns. (Dan Daniels)

It IS a small little Pennsylvania town, one we drive through all the time, but I can't remember its name. It has a beautiful cemetery, though—the one with the fawns.

Small statue from the World Cultures section of Liverpool's World Museum

Disappointed while visiting a hunting lease Sunday we never saw any real wildlife, but I did enjoy looking at the small world of the lichens growing on top of an old wooden fence. Didn't have my macro with me so this is just a closeup with the zoom on my wife's camera that I was using today.

Two famous Czech sand trucks, seen in a toy shop. I've had the blue one myself but gave it away.

I didn't ask the price, but I know they're availabe on the internet.

I converted the small mech I built in LDD a while back, to the white/black/dark red color scheme that I like. I might buy the parts for this in a few weeks.
