Back Garden - only the second time I've seen one in the garden, again like the Yellow shell it was in under overhanging Leylandii, so not very good light.

Taken 11 days ago at Santee Lakes in Santee, California.

Other pictures that I've taken of both dragonflies and butterflies can be seen in my Butterflies & Dragonflies set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157626745277518/...

I do quite a bit of photography at Santee Lakes as they have great birds and dragonflies, plus it looks great in infrared. Also, it's relatively close to my house. Other pictures from Santee Lakes are in my Santee Lakes album.

Avon Dale House and farm, between Bitton and Keynsham, Gloucestershire, 30 May 2020. This was originally the HQ offices of the Avon & Gloucestershire Railway called Avon House. Although often referred to as a dramway, the A&GR was not a dramway but a proper standard gauge railway, albeit it with horse-drawn chaldron wagon trains. The line was opened in 1830-33 to provide an outlet for collieries in the Coalpit Heath and Warmley areas. The main line of the A&GR was promoted by the Bristol & Gloucestershire Railway (later taken over by the Bristol & Gloucester Railway which became part of the Midland Railway) and ran from a connection with the latter at Mangotsfield to Willsbridge where it then divided into one line to Keynsham Wharf and (later) another to Londonderry Farm Wharf, Keynsham (although the town was on the other bank of the Avon). The coal was then shipped by river barge to the cities of Bristol and Bath. There were also a multiplicity of small branches to numerous collieries.

Ownership of the railway soon passed to the Kennet and Avon Canal Co., which had also invested heavily in the A&GR, although the A&GR kept its separate identity. In 1851 the GWR took over the K&ACC and in 1867 wound up the A&GR. By that time most of the collieries had closed or found other ways of transporting their coal although in 1876 the California Colliery at Oldland Common reopened and decided to use the southern portion of the abandoned line, somehow gained possession of it and repaired it. However, use was intermittent and steadily declined until the railway was abandoned in 1904 – horse drawn until the end – although the line does not seem to have been officially closed until 1906. Much of the old trackbed is now a footpath.

Based in a 3x3 sphere. Probably not the final design because I’m still working on it.

Received my tripod head today, along with a shutter remote. What a difference these items make. Added a 12mm extension tube to the 28mm 2.8 macro lens.

Love small English gardens behind the house, full of life...

I thought after the Plane crash this afternoon, and the cause most likely a flock of geese flew into the plane, this shot I took at Glen Cove yesterday seemed appropriate to post.

Thankfully everyone seems to have survived, the Pilot did a great job from all acounts

Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae). Photographed near Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire.

Another really nice Small Tortoiseshell - its been a good year around here for Small Tortoiseshells.

On a sunny January morning.

Bingley Five-Rise Locks is a staircase lock on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in West Yorkshire. Any boat passing through the lock is lifted or lowered in five stages.

The five-rise opened in March 1774 and was a major feat of engineering at the time. When the locks and therefore the canal from Gargrave to Thackley was opened in 1774 a crowd of 30,000 people turned out to celebrate. The first boat to use the locks took just 28 minutes. The smaller Bingley three-Rise opened at the same time just a few hundred yards downstream.

The five-rise is the steepest flight of locks in the UK, with a gradient of about 1:5 (a rise of 60 (18 m) over a distance of 320 ft (98 m)). The intermediate and bottom gates are the tallest in the country. Because of the complications of working a staircase lock, and because so many boaters are inexperienced, a full-time lock keeper is employed, and the locks are padlocked out of hours.

Small cakes have three cake layers, 2 of icing, with 1 slice cut out and a doily. Great for convention gifts. Today I finished, almost, the color yellow.

I used Topaz Simplify to give this simple little church a painterly effect.
