This is probably a Milk thistle (Silybum) flower. Thistles have some defenses.

I took an unexpected hiatus, due to some unexpected computer problems. I'm back for a couple of days, then will be off for traveling.

It's good to be back!

Late on the scene, but Aglais urticae is another species added to the garden butterfly count this year. This one is sipping Eupatorium nectar.

I passed through the tiny town of Interior, SD a number of times during my September 2022 visit to Badlands NP. I found little of photographic interest here, but small town churches always have appeal.

Small Copper

Lycaena phlaeas

The Small Copper is usually seen in ones and twos, but in some years large numbers may be found at good sites. Males are territorial, often choosing a piece of bare ground or a stone on which to bask and await passing females. They behave aggressively towards any passing insects, returning to the same spot when the chase is over.

Though it remains a common and widespread species, the Small Copper declined throughout its range during the twentieth century. Widespread through Britain and Ireland, and occasionally visits gardens.

Working through today’s edit for a coming story update with David.

David explained the injuries he suffered as a result of an attack in Market Town, prior to the accident that blinded him for life and washed his plate after eating his daily ready meal.

Since his mother, Eugene’s passing in November last year, every meal is prepared and eaten, alone.

The main purpose of this visit was to see this species.

As written earlier, I ignored the weather forecast which was very inaccurate and in spite of travel problems it was a fantastic visit. There were many of the butterflies.

I am uploading a few today but took so many photos of a species I only see once a year that I will upload more tomorrow.

A ventral view is much harder to get and I really only got any just before leaving. The males and females are identical (to me at least) from this view.

#smalltowninertia David at home September 2016

Early Thursday morning I had a telephone call from David, his SARA audio scanner (Fundraised via social media) had ceased working.

David was beside himself with worry.

A quick telephone call to the wonderful Sight and Sound technology later and I was relayed a way to potentially fix the problem. Juggling caring chores at home I immediately headed over to David’s home on the bus.

The SARA device is a lifeline for David. Samantha, the electronic voice that reads aloud any printed material scanned has evolved into being as important, in the absence of an actual person, a companion, a voice that cuts through David’s 100% NLP (Nil Light Perception) blindness and informs hen reading bills or a newspaper and transports and soothes when reading pages of books.

Thankfully, the fix worked and in no time I had cleaned, repaired the SARA device and once again it was working perfectly and Samantha’s voice sang out. David was overjoyed.

Afterwards, David and I took the time to make some portraits together. I’ll be returning next week to work some more upon a coming update to his story of enduring blindness, alone, in 2016.
