This is the exit point of the Wire Pass trail (which passes through a narrow slot canyon) at the conjunction where it enters Buckskin Gulch in Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. I love walking in slot canyons. Note the hiker near the far wall for scale.
Jasper, Jean and I are exploring Southern Utah this week. This morning we found a couple of slot canyons near Kanab. Though a bit too wet for a thorough exploration, it was still very cool. Even at 12 years old, Jasper hiked like a champ.
This is an old photo taken with a point & shoot camera. I was fortunate that the perfect amount of light penetrated through the top of the slot canyon. The light is even better for photographs at mid-day.
Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon includes two separate, photogenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as Upper Antelope Canyon or The Crack; and Antelope Canyon or The Corkscrew.
A beautiful slot canyon can be found below the East Entrance Road in Zion National Park. We hiked this canyon because other areas in the park were too crowded. We wanted to limit our covid exposure since we hadn't been vaccinated yet. Luckily we saw very few people in this canyon.
a strong point in the defends of the low lands that could surround the bastion by flooding land around it with water from the rivers, on many times used as state prison and POW camp.
The "Zebra Slot Canyon" is one of the worthwhile destinations in the "Hole in the Rock Road" area near Escalante, part of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, best in later morning with indirect light.
At the beginning of November 2016 I was again in this canyon, but it was full of brackish, cold water, so I could not reach the photographically interesting area as in the picture.

Most people go to Vegas to have fun in the casinos. I tend to go to Vegas to visit family and explore the sights outside the city... whether it be Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire State Park depicted here.
Of course, the key is to go during the cooler months, when the temperatures aren't north of 100°F. Timing is everything. In this case, we hiked all around Valley of Fire the first week of April this year, and the following week the temperatures reached 99°F and higher. We camped with our dogs for the first time, and they enjoyed the hikes, but not the windy nights. Obviously, there was enough breeze during the day to kick up some sand in the slots, which made them a bit brighter and added to the aura. For my money, these slots pay out better than the ones on the strip any day of the week.

A beautiful place the canyons are amazing This is out of my comfort zone ! but having a great time in Arizona.
Macro Mondays 'holes' theme.
I took several different photos for this week's 'holes' theme, then dithered about which one to upload, finally deciding on this one of a dark grey plastic slotted serving spoon. It's hangs on a rack and is rarely used as you can tell by the dreaded macro dust!

A tree somehow survives in a 30-foot-deep slot canyon near Page, Arizona.
Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday!

While on a trip to the Southwest I discovered a hidden slot canyon. As I walked through the winding cavern, light trickled down from above casting shadows and highlights on the walls and floor.
This is not Antelope Canyon in Page Arizona., this is just outside of Blanding Utah in the desert.
Thanks for stopping by
Slot canyon hiking can be one of the most interesting and challenging activities in red rock canyon country. Over eons of storms, slot canyons were formed by racing water and the tumble of boulders and other debris leaving interesting patterns and colors in the sandstone.
Navigating the large boulders, steep talus slopes, and deep pools requires special gear and skills to maneuver.
The most important skill is possession of a conservative mindset when it comes to when to hike down a slot canyon, and more importantly, when not to hike. Flashfloods can blossom into catastrophic events even when there is little or no precipitation in the immediate vicinity. Far away mountains and plateaus are carved with numerous rivulets, washes, and creeks that funnel rain water into many slot canyons.
My words here come from an experience of having to climb up out of an approaching flashflood and watching many flashfloods from a distance over the years. Stay safe!
We drove to Zion National Park for the day. The park was so crowded with people it seemed that everyone else had the same idea. It probably seemed even more crowded to us because we have spent so much time in remote places recently. We decided to leave but on the way out happened to snag a parking spot along the road. Then we dropped down into the wash which runs below the road. We hiked a few miles along the wash and ran into very few people, most of them stayed up near the road. We found several lovely slot canyons.
A view of Lower Antelope Slot canyon near Page, Arizona. This is a 5 exposure hdr followed by Lucisart processing to bring out the texture. I also pushed the color saturation but did not add color or colorize the image in any way.
