HISTORY
Mushroom ketchup
Ketchup was historically prepared with mushrooms as a primary ingredient, rather than tomatoes.
In the United States, mushroom ketchup dates back to at least 1770, and was prepared by British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies.
Tomato ketchup
Many variations of ketchup were created, but the tomato-based version did not appear until around a century after other types.
An early recipe for "Tomato Catsup" from 1817 includes anchovies.
The term ketchup first appeared in 1682.
Ketchup recipes began to appear in British and then American cookbooks in the 18th century.
James Mease published the first known tomato ketchup recipe in 1812.
In 1824, a ketchup recipe using tomatoes appeared in The Virginia Housewife (an influential 19th-century cookbook written by Mary Randolph, Thomas Jefferson's cousin).
Tomato ketchup was sold locally by farmers.
Jonas Yerkes is credited as the first American to sell it in a bottle.
By 1837, he had produced and distributed the condiment nationally.
Shortly thereafter, other companies followed suit. F. & J. Heinz launched their tomato ketchup in 1876.
American cooks also began to sweeten ketchup in the 19th century.
The Webster's Dictionary of 1913 defined "catsup" as: "table sauce made from mushrooms, tomatoes, walnuts, etc. [Also written as ketchup]."
As the century progressed, tomato ketchup began its ascent in popularity in the United States. Tomato ketchup was popular long before fresh tomatoes were. People were less hesitant to eat tomatoes as part of a highly processed product that had been cooked and infused with vinegar and spices.
Heinz Tomato Ketchup was advertised: "Blessed relief for Mother and the other women in the household!", a slogan which alluded to the lengthy process required to produce tomato ketchup in the home.
With industrial ketchup production and a need for better preservation there was a great increase of sugar in ketchup, leading to the typically sweet and sour formula of today.
In Australia, it was not until the late 19th century that sugar was added to tomato sauce, initially in small quantities, but today it contains just as much as American ketchup and only differed in the proportions of tomatoes, salt and vinegar in early recipes.
While ketchup and tomato sauce are both sold in Australia, American ketchup is sweeter and thicker whereas Australian tomato sauce is more sour and runny.
Modern ketchup emerged in the early years of the 20th century, out of a debate over the use of sodium benzoate as a preservative in condiments.
Harvey W. Wiley, the "father" of the US Food and Drug Administration, challenged the safety of benzoate which was banned in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act.
In response, entrepreneurs including Henry J. Heinz, pursued an alternative recipe that eliminated the need for that preservative.
Katherine Bitting, a bacteriologist working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, carried out research in 1909 that proved increasing the sugar and vinegar content of the product would prevent spoilage without use of artificial preservatives.
She was assisted by her husband, Arvil Bitting, an official at that agency.
Prior to Heinz (and his fellow innovators), commercial tomato ketchups of that time were watery and thin, in part because they used unripe tomatoes, which were low in pectin.
They had less vinegar than modern ketchups; by pickling ripe tomatoes, the need for benzoate was eliminated without spoilage or degradation in flavor.
But the changes driven by the desire to eliminate benzoate also produced changes that some experts (such as Andrew F. Smith) believe were key to the establishment of tomato ketchup as the dominant American condiment.
"P-P-Pick Up A Penguin."
One advert that a lot of people will remember was the slogan and song "P-P-Pick Up a Penguin". It was once very fashionable to be seen picking up a penguin, but not a real one, of course!
No political statement intended. I like the texture and tones. That's all.
For those who can't do without a message, please listen to An Harangue by The Red Krayola, a song from the album whose name I borrowed for this picture's title.
Personally, I think it's one of lamest city slogans I've encountered... Quite a yawner...
be part of the sizzle, be part of the flame, be part of the wow, anything but the word energy....

I found this old Sears bag from the early 1970s in the basement here. Cool to see what their bags looked like bag then. Taken with a panasonic DMC ZS20.
found down a side alley off Oxford Road, about a mile from the place Dylan was actually labelled a Judas for picking up an electric guitar - haven't times changed?
Avis, Portalegre, Portugal.
Avis is the most "communist" municipalitie in Portugal. There, since 1976, the party of the hammer and the sickle wins all elections, whether municipal, parliamentary, presidential or European. Perhaps this is why one of the images that struck me the most on that noble village was the dramatic contrast between the murals with revolutionary slogans and the walls of the churchyard of St. Benedict's Convent of the Order of Avis, in the best Latin American style.
Avis, Portalegre, Portugal.
Tangled Twigs 24/10/2021 15h39
Tangled Twigs was a new scare zone in 2019 but had been replaced from Wilderness to this location in the covid year 2020 but due to the health measures Walibi Fright Nights 2020 was only for 2 days and not many people experienced this scare zone in this setting in 2020. Twingled Twigs is open during Spooky Days (daytime) en Fright Nights (from 18h00 on). It is a walk thru zone from the Central Plaza till Speedzone on a shortcut in the park which is normally closed for visitors.
At first sight, nature seems very peaceful, until you look a little further. The branches of trees and bushes seem to want to strangle you. Will you be able to escape the power of 'mother nature' or will you end up as a scarecrow, nailed to a pole? [ Walibi ]

During daytime there is Spooky Days for children, a bit scary than the night program.
The park is open till 23h during these 12 most busy days and nights of the year. The slogan of 2021 is Darkness Takes Over.

As in many other countries, the parasites in power in Australia have found that whipping up paranoia about "lazy, illiterate foreigners coming to steal your jobs" is a good way to stay in power. These billboards, seen on The Substation, Newport, (a suburb of Melbourne) remind us of a different story - that apart from the tiny (and oppressed - but that's another story) Aboriginal population, we are all either immigrants or descendents of immigrants. The last two billboards are words take from our National Anthem!
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

A Chinese boy jumped out of his pram and came to greet little Kesavan when he saw him on the walkway. Nobody knows what they talked to each other. We guess the spirit of it was the slogan of 1950s "Hindi-Chini Bhai bhai" (Indians and Chinese are brothers)

This just cried out to be photographed, and put the track in my head for the rest of the day. Post Street, Godmanchester on a recent dancing road trip.
The pilgrims are returning after performing the due rituals over the crater of mud volcano they call after the name of goddess Parvati.
Throwing rice, beetle nuts, coins, and other things into the crater and applying mud over face -all from the rituals of Hinglaj Mata pilgrimage they are on here to perform.
