Every year a million people visit the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds. Most of the visitors will enter through the rebuilt 14th century Abbeygate.
There is a 1000 years of history for those who enter. But today's tourists the "Contemporary Pilgrims", may just be looking for rest and relaxation along with ice creams, coffee, slides and swings.
Today it is a great spot for a picnic or a photographer but for hundreds of years it was a place of pilgrimage. This was because from 903ad this was the site of the shrine to the Anglo Saxon King St Edmund.
Looking at the images for this project you will see "contemporary pilgrims" who walk in the same steps as pilgrims once did for St Edmund for hundreds of years.
This was a possible contender for the Saturday challenge for 2nd April, ‘units of measure’. Well, there are plenty of units here, though what they’re measuring I’ve long forgotten, if I ever knew! I bought this slide rule in 1965 when I went up to University to read for a science degree, but I never really got to grips with it - and indeed I never really got to grips with the degree course either, perhaps because it was about then I discovered that there were far more exciting things in life! And complex mathematical calculations weren’t really called for during my Customs career, as long as I could work out how much VAT was on something at whatever %age was in force, so the slide rule has remained in the back of a drawer ever since.
And who uses a slide rule these days, with all the calculating power you need right there on your tablet or phone? Though of course a slide rule never needs recharging, so this one’s as ready for action now as it was 57 years ago - if only I could remember how to work it!

I came across this original Kodachrome while working through a slide collection. Had to share it as it looks like a movie and not a nicely captured moment in history.
No photographer listed, but his image shows life was very different and yet very much the same 60 years ago.

Totally a big-kids slide on a big-kids structure but, after seeing a slightly older girl go on it by herself, Allie wanted to show she could do it, too.
took this picture of a great sunset reflection off a white limo that had very little color in it. sliding it with Picasa's Heat Map sure made it pop though. the reflection is of mountains & a city (in blue) and the sky is orange
Used in a robbery scene and i remember 'White Arrow' and other companys running them in the 70s and early 80s...

Darkday & I have wanted to the Air Services slide for ages. But we never had a bread crate. When Darkday saw this bread crate lying with some other trash on the side on the road, Darkday jumped out of the car and grabbed it and says with a smile "Now we can do the Air Services slide".
Whoo hooo Darkday - u rock
u can go first....
My favorite of the mechs I made. I wish it didn't have the dark bley, but that can't be helped, as I have a pretty limited piece collection. Inspired by {TCC}'s Scouting Class Mecha. If you're added I'd appericate your feedback.
