In early 1900’s Idaho eight heads of households could jointly petition the state to create a school district. In 1909, homesteaders in the upper reaches of Medicine Lodge Creek reached this threshold, and District 79 was born. The one-room Edie School built that year was in use until 1956. The mother of the family that “adopted me” while I carried out the mapping for my master’s degree, rode her horse to school in the early 1940’s. In winter, the school was a full day’s sleighride from the nearest town.
One of the activities offered at Old World Wisconsin's 'Old Fashioned Christmas' is a sleigh ride. This year's lack of snow converted that to a hay wagon ride of sorts (no hay - just a wagon ride on bench seats). These gents waited patiently for the wagon to load and unload, and were well behaved - probably to the point of boredom- between rides.

The Santa Claus Village is a popular attraction, where visitors have the chance to meet Santa Claus, visit his post office and experience the magic of Christmas all year round. Rovaniemi is located right on the Arctic Circle, meaning it is an excellent location to see the Northern Lights, especially during the winter months. The city also offers unique experiences, such as the opportunity to cross the Arctic Circle. The Arktikum is the science center and museum and provides insight into Arctic nature and culture. It features exhibitions on the history, geology, flora and fauna of the region. Located near Rovaniemi, Ranua Zoo is the northernmost zoo in the world. It is home to a variety of Arctic animals, including polar bears, lynx, reindeer and arctic foxes. Rovaniemi enjoys abundant snow cover during most of the winter. Snowfall usually starts in November and continues until April. This creates a fairytale winter environment. Periods of deep frost are common, with temperatures often dropping to -20°C or even lower. Cold waves with temperatures below -30°C are not uncommon. Rovaniemi offers extensive opportunities for outdoor activities, such as husky rides, reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile tours and cross-country skiing, allowing visitors to explore the beautiful natural environment. It is important to be well prepared for the winter conditions in Rovaniemi by wearing appropriate clothing, such as thermal layers, insulated jackets, gloves and boots, to comfortably enjoy all the winter activities the region has to offer.
In Rovaniemi, I am visiting my son BieJee, who is currently conducting research at the University of Lapland in Finland, specifically at the Arktikum. This science center and museum provide insights into both Arctic nature and culture. His research includes studying the impact of climate change on the Sámi, the indigenous people of Lapland. The Sámi have their own unique culture, languages, and traditions, and are known for their close connection to nature and the preservation of their nomadic lifestyle. Upon arrival in Rovaniemi, I experience a temperature of -21°C, and there is just a fresh layer of snow. The University of Lapland offers various guest rooms, primarily used by domestic and international guest lecturers, researchers, and professors invited by our university. His apartment here above is truly a gem. The iconic red wooden houses, found throughout Finland in both urban and rural areas, contribute to the picturesque appearance of Finnish villages and have become a symbol of the country's rustic beauty.

My son is studying at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam for his master’s degree in Management, Policy Analysis, and Entrepreneurship in the Health & Life Sciences. It's a comprehensive program focused on contributing to the improvement of health and well-being of people and other organisms. In this MPA master’s, students investigate the collaboration between government, business, social institutions, consumers, and patients. I am visiting my son BieJee in Rovaniemi, where he is working on his master’s thesis at the partner university in Lapland, specifically at the Arktikum. Arktikum is a science center and museum where you can closely experience northern nature, culture, and history. It houses the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and the Regional Museum of Lapland. The center stimulates thinking, encourages debate, and provides deeper insights into the Arctic region. BieJee is researching the impact of climate change on the Sami, the indigenous people of Lapland. The Sami have their own unique culture, languages, and traditions and are known for their close connection to nature and the preservation of their nomadic lifestyle. Climate change has significant effects on the Sami, an indigenous people living in Lapland, a region that spans Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Changes in snow and ice cover directly impact traditional activities such as reindeer herding, a crucial part of Sami culture and economy. The warming climate leads to ecosystem changes, such as the shifting of tree lines and the emergence of new plant and animal species. This can disrupt the habitat of reindeer and other animals and alter the region's biodiversity. Milder winters and increased rainfall can create an ice layer on the snow, making it more difficult for reindeer to access lichen, their primary food source. Melting snow and ice make it harder to access traditional areas vital to the Sami's culture and livelihood, such as hunting and fishing grounds. Environmental changes force them to adapt their centuries-old traditions and ways of life. Adapting to new conditions can create financial pressure and disrupt the social and cultural structures within Sami communities.
The Sami advocate for greater recognition of the impact of climate change on indigenous peoples and call for support in the adaptation process. Climate change is thus not only an ecological problem but also a cultural and social issue for the Sami. I am proud to say that BieJee’s thesis, which contributes to the improvement of the health and well-being of the Sami, has been successfully completed. Met trots kan ik zeggen dat BieJee's masterscriptie, die bijdraagt aan de verbetering van de gezondheid en het welzijn van de Sami, met succes is afgerond. Christmas Concert
Difficult decision which image to use. I was invited to the Christmas Concert by Surrey Youth Orchestra. My nephew plays base. I went to listen to Tchaikovsky , Glinka , Schubert and take few pictures of my nephew. I ended shooting 160 images ( including people – yes I did “shoot” people and you can see how often I do that) so it is not easy to pick something for the front. I really like classical music and I must say that have played well , pleasure to listen.
Great Friend was the influence to take this approach to bokeh , her images have inspired me for a while - Thank you Virginia

The trees bend gently under the weight of the snow, and nature seems to be in deep hibernation. The path to the top of Ounasvaara is surrounded by pine trees decorated with ice crystals. As I climb higher, the effort is rewarded with an increasingly impressive view. Upon arrival at the top I enjoy the breathtaking view; Rovaniemi lies beneath me like an enchanting winter postcard, with snow-capped roofs and frozen rivers. The vastness of the snowy landscape stretches to the horizon, and the cold air tickles my skin. The moment at the top, surrounded by the white splendor of nature, is magical. It is not only the climb but also an encounter with the beauty of winter in Lapland.

Hierdoor ontstaat een sprookjesachtige winterse omgeving. Ounasvaara is een opvallende bergtop bijna in het centrum van Rovaniemi. Deze bergtop is niet alleen een natuurlijke trekpleister, maar ook een geliefde bestemming om te skiën en snowboarden, met hellingen geschikt voor zowel beginners als ervaren skiërs. Doordat Ounasvaara een heuvelachtig gebied is, vormt het ook een uitstekende locatie voor het observeren van het noorderlicht. Mijn avontuur begint aan de voet van Ounasvaara, waar de sneeuw een ongerept wit tapijt vormt en de bomen gehuld zijn in dikke laag poedersneeuw. Elke stap doorbreekt de serene stilte van de besneeuwde omgeving, het knerpende geluid van verse sneeuw onder mijn wandelschoenen vult de lucht. De bomen buigen zachtjes onder het gewicht van de sneeuw, en de natuur lijkt in een diepe winterslaap. Het pad naar de top van Ounasvaara wordt omgeven door dennenbomen die versierd zijn met ijskristallen. Naarmate ik hoger klim, wordt de inspanning beloond met een steeds indrukwekkender uitzicht. Bij aankomst op de top geniet ik van het adembenemende uitzicht; Rovaniemi ligt als een betoverende winterse ansichtkaart onder me, met besneeuwde daken en bevroren rivieren. De uitgestrektheid van het besneeuwde landschap strekt zich uit tot aan de horizon, en de koude lucht prikkelt mijn huid. Het moment op de top, omringd door de witte pracht van de natuur, is magisch. Het is niet alleen de klim maar ook een ontmoeting met de schoonheid van de winter in Lapland.
