This was so true, we were all touched by magic on the sleigh ride. I didn't even want to go to be honest but told myself I am going to say "yes" more to things. Here I was, snuggled with family, listening to jingle bells and feeling like I was truly in an old classic Christmas song. I couldn't ask for anything more.

365: the 2022 Edition 9/365
The slopes are almost bare of snow from the many sleigh riders on the weekend. I wasn't on a sled but certainly enjoyed hearing the little girls in the picture squeal with delight as they coasted down the hill. Who doesn't have fond childhood memories of playing in the snow - if you had snow that is.
2021 Walk 180: Day 8
A view of Mount Rundell from our sleigh. The flat area right behind us is a swamp in the summer months and was now covered in snow. There were little tufts of aquatic plants sticking out from the snow and our driver showed us all the Elk tracks and flat bedding areas in the snow that were left by a herd of Elk that had been there within 24 hours. They come to eat those plants sticking up in the snow.
As seen on my travels the day Washington, D.C. was closed due to the 4th Nor'easter to hit the east coast. A fine place to sleigh ride, one of the few places in Washington. Still shoveling out what I hope is the end of my snow shots for the season.
I was actually shooting a farm scene opposite this when I turned around and there was the sleigh. I got to shoot about 3 quick frames and the sleigh was gone.
While the colors of the setting sun made the distant mountain look warm, we were in a sleigh and it was -14.
Congratulations from the bottom of my heart and I wish you many, many delicious ruddy pancakes with all your favorite fillings and tops! Let them cheer you up and warm you up like edible suns. I wish you fun, songs, dances, parties and fun adventures! May this Maslenitsa be remembered for a lifetime! The city also offers unique experiences, such as the opportunity to cross the Arctic Circle. The Arktikum is the science center and museum and provides insight into Arctic nature and culture. It features exhibitions on the history, geology, flora and fauna of the region. Located near Rovaniemi, Ranua Zoo is the northernmost zoo in the world. It is home to a variety of Arctic animals, including polar bears, lynx, reindeer and arctic foxes. Rovaniemi enjoys abundant snow cover during most of the winter. Snowfall usually starts in November and continues until April. This creates a fairytale winter environment. Periods of deep frost are common, with temperatures often dropping to -20°C or even lower. Cold waves with temperatures below -30°C are not uncommon. Rovaniemi offers extensive opportunities for outdoor activities, such as husky rides, reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile tours and cross-country skiing, allowing visitors to explore the beautiful natural environment. It is important to be well prepared for the winter conditions in Rovaniemi by wearing appropriate clothing, such as thermal layers, insulated jackets, gloves and boots, to comfortably enjoy all the winter activities the region has to offer.
In Rovaniemi, I am visiting my son BieJee, who is currently conducting research at the University of Lapland in Finland, specifically at the Arktikum. This science center and museum provide insights into both Arctic nature and culture. His research includes studying the impact of climate change on the Sámi, the indigenous people of Lapland. The Sámi have their own unique culture, languages, and traditions, and are known for their close connection to nature and the preservation of their nomadic lifestyle. Upon arrival in Rovaniemi, I experience a temperature of -21°C, and there is just a fresh layer of snow. The University of Lapland offers various guest rooms, primarily used by domestic and international guest lecturers, researchers, and professors invited by our university. His apartment here above is truly a gem. The iconic red wooden houses, found throughout Finland in both urban and rural areas, contribute to the picturesque appearance of Finnish villages and have become a symbol of the country's rustic beauty.

I have been away for a bit. It is sad I won't make my 365 day challenge but I needed a break to recharge. I am not even sure I am quite there yet to return but hoping to get some much needed mojo back soon! Perhaps I am burnt out from Christmas? Mojo goes in spurts I think, haha.

My adventure begins at the foot of Ounasvaara, where the snow forms a pristine white carpet and the trees are shrouded in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step breaks the serene silence of the snowy surroundings, the crunching sound of fresh snow under my walking boots fills the air. The trees bend gently under the weight of the snow, and nature seems to be in deep hibernation. The path to the top of Ounasvaara is surrounded by pine trees decorated with ice crystals. As I climb higher, the effort is rewarded with an increasingly impressive view. Upon arrival at the top I enjoy the breathtaking view; Rovaniemi lies beneath me like an enchanting winter postcard, with snow-capped roofs and frozen rivers. The vastness of the snowy landscape stretches to the horizon, and the cold air tickles my skin. The moment at the top, surrounded by the white splendor of nature, is magical. It is not only the climb but also an encounter with the beauty of winter in Lapland.

Elke stap doorbreekt de serene stilte van de besneeuwde omgeving, het knerpende geluid van verse sneeuw onder mijn wandelschoenen vult de lucht. De bomen buigen zachtjes onder het gewicht van de sneeuw, en de natuur lijkt in een diepe winterslaap. Het pad naar de top van Ounasvaara wordt omgeven door dennenbomen die versierd zijn met ijskristallen. Naarmate ik hoger klim, wordt de inspanning beloond met een steeds indrukwekkender uitzicht. Bij aankomst op de top geniet ik van het adembenemende uitzicht; Rovaniemi ligt als een betoverende winterse ansichtkaart onder me, met besneeuwde daken en bevroren rivieren. De uitgestrektheid van het besneeuwde landschap strekt zich uit tot aan de horizon, en de koude lucht prikkelt mijn huid. Het moment op de top, omringd door de witte pracht van de natuur, is magisch. Het is niet alleen de klim maar ook een ontmoeting met de schoonheid van de winter in Lapland.
