About the Painting:
In war-torn Liberia, many people in remote parts of the country grow and harvest rice to make a living. Rice is a staple in Liberia. There is a Liberian saying, "If you haven't eaten rice today, then you haven't eaten at all." An estimated 60% of rice production in Liberia is by women. They will grow, harvest and sell the rice in order to provide nourishment and income for their often large families.
This painting was stretched for the art exhibit, but was taken off the stretcher boards to transport back to the States. Can be restretched.
About the Artist:
My name is Augustus Kollie. I am 21 years old, and I was born in Kakata City. During the war, I lived mostly in Paynesville with my family. It was a difficult time, and there were many days that we didn't each much. Some days, we didn't eat anything at all. Many of my friends died. But I'm thankful that most of my family survived. After the war, I worked as a typist. I didn't begin to paint seriously until just this year. I met an artist who agreed to mentor me. Today, my dream is to go to art school and to become a professional painter. I want to do art at the fullest.

If you've never been in a mine, this picture should explain why behemoth and metal giant are terms that are entirely appropriate for mining trucks.

With just two tank container waggons in tow, SWEG V 70.01 (Gmeinder 1959/5117) approaches Hildmannsfeld with the lunchtime EK 55817 trip freight from DOW Greffern to Offenburg Gbf. on 20.04.2018.
A landscape timber from Home Depot makes a pretty good crossarm (they are in 8 ft lengths and I cut this one down to a 6 footer). All I have to get now is a decent size fence post to use for a pole.
The fall colors were all around me that day. I could have taken some great shots if i would have been in a boat. Next time im bringing my fishing pole and a picnic basket. Oh and my Canon 60d, how could i forget that. )
This shot is out of focus and basically sucks but I decided to post it anyway because of the enormous size difference. I never saw the Finch when photographing the Kite. So it was a surprise. Wish the shot would have been better. Garin RP, Hayward, CA.
The rollers and chain in the previous photo are in use here. Ghost, the red and white boat of 'last boat to be slipped' fame is in a cradle which is positioned several metres away from the tracks. Ghost is now being moved sideways with the "come-along" (ratchet chain hoist) until the wheel of the cradle meets the track rail. I am sure someone else can explain this better! I had great fun making Ghost move :-)) and here she is after being moved onto the rails ready for slipping.
