Guru Geeta Chandran's Natya Vriksha celebrates the world dance day every year with a series of performances by young, brilliant dancers from across the country and abroad.

Apart from this, Natya Vriksha also brings eminent culture ambassadors and gurus to come and share their life-time work with the young dancers.

The mornings featured workshops by Santosh Nair, a fine mover on the first day, filled by a workshop on Rythm the following day by young percussionist, Manohar Balatchandirane.

One of the very interesting feature of this year’s World Dance Day program was a lecture by Amb Pavan K.Varma on the topic: The glorious legacy of Indian Culture: Challenges and Opportunities.

There was also a presentation by senior dancer and dance teacher from Baroda, Smt.Rema Srikanth on her personal journey in dance, with about eight of her disciples performing.

This year's dancers were

Odissi: Rajashri Praharaj (Bhubaneshwar)

Kathak: Rupanshi Kashyap (Ahmedabad)

Bharatanatyam: Manasvini Ramachandran (Chennai)

To the outside, In the Train, A quaint cafe, The numb bride, The old lady with the deepest of creases, A bustling city and its nightlife, A secret Crush, The dead mornings and bright sunflowers, All bundles into a book. But each of these being inspired from around that makes us look back into ourselves. The characters drawn in here are us, within us and from us. It makes one reckon that we indeed lead vulnerable lives in the pace of the world and we just have two choices: to embrace it or challenge it. Its all up to you, to live it. From left to right:

Sakthivel Thusanthini, deminer:

“I come from a big family - all together there are seven of us. Two brothers, three sisters and my mother. My father died in 2010 from kidney failure and since then all responsibilities came to my mother and me. It was shocking to learn that I had this responsibility, at such a young age, to save my family from the poorest conditions. My mother and I usually went for daily labour work and earned some small money, but it wasn’t enough to cover the costs of our daily meals.

“In 2010, I had an opportunity to work in a mine action organisation as a deminer. In 2013, I left the job and then again I faced so many difficulties to manage my family’s needs. I was employed by MAG again as deminer in February 2014.

“I am being loved and looked after by other team members and we are all happily working for MAG.”

Ms. Sivakumar Vasuki, Deputy Team Leader: “During the civil war I lost my father, two sisters and two brothers. They died in front of me. Those were the unforgettable and most terrible moments of my life.

"My family is small now. I have a 22-year-old sister who is suffering from heart disease. My mother had an accident three years ago and since then has been unable to work. I have a five-year-old son. I was married, but my husband left after only one month of marriage.

“In 2011, I joined MAG as a deminer. I am aware that my employment keeps the members of my family alive.”

Nachchimuthu Naguleswarai, Team Leader: “The war changed our lives. We were displaced from one place to another

until the Sri Lankan Army put us into an IDP camp in Menifarm Cheddikulam. During the war, my elder brother died, a younger brother disappeared and my sister’s husband died in an accident in 2007.

"My sister has four children and they are all studying now. I am the one supporting them and the rest of my family.

“My work supports my family and also people who are living nearby contaminated areas. I enjoy my important work with MAG very much.”

Ravikumar Thamilselvi, deminer:

“In1993, I lost my brother, who died in the war between the LTTE and Sri Lankan Army. In 2009, my family was displaced from our village, Kachchilaimadhu,

Oddusuddan, and went to Mullivaikkal. After that, the Sri Lanka Army took us to the IDP camp.

“I was married in 2003 and I have a seven-year-old daughter, but my husband left me ten years ago. With the salary that I earn with MAG I feed my father who can’t work anymore, my younger sister and my child.

“I love to work with MAG. This organisation is saving many lives and also my life and lives of my family members.”
