We wanted to make places that don’t exist, with rich iconographies pointing to nowhere. An indeterminate zone (“The Orient”) through which identity can fracture like refracted light. It’s a made up place where there is no there - yet the impacts of orientalism are felt materially, pooling around people and places of need to Other their struggles. This flattening of identity gives calm to the colonial gaze, as dehuminization creates objects and empathy gets in the way of control. Were they just terrorists asking for it, or just objectified massage workers. The gaze doesn’t ask. We wanted to meet and return this gaze to the spectator.
