There are no rules and regulations for perfect composition. If there were we would be able to put all the information into a computer and would come out with a masterpiece. We know that's impossible. You have to compose by the seat of your pants.
-Arnold Newman-
And this saying held true for this shot. I had mere minutes to compose and shoot as many shots possible as this light was changing so quickly. 10, 15 minutes maximum and the sun was up, the colours gone.
Do it justice, view it on black
In Annapolis Royal there is the beautiful 17-acre Historic Gardens, rated as Canada's 2015 Garden of the Year! In a tranquil setting overlooking a tidal river valley, the Historic Gardens showcase gardening methods, designs and materials representing more than four hundred years of Canadian history. Highlights include the largest rose collection in Eastern Canada, a reconstructed 1671 Acadian House and much, much more.
One of the premiere collections in Atlantic Canada, the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens are a gardener’s paradise and a photographer’s delight! The rhododendron & azalea collection at the Gardens is a June highlight.
A single hosta plant just emerging from the soil - edited in Lightroom to black out the soil and ehance the lighting a bit. This hosta grows extremely fast - I took this shot in the morning and I wasn't 100% happy with the DOF - I went back at the end of the day and it had grown and opened up too much to get the same effect.
I love a good double exposure but not this time. This painting is one I bought outside Lisboa, Portugal from a dude of a street artist A.D. Smith. Reflected in the glass that's in front is outside, the fern, hills and railing. Wrap your noggin around that, (brain gymnastics 101 aka rolly polly lloln).
RHK taking his second ride on some nearby prairie single-track.
Processed with the magic wand tool in the Flickr mobile app...a little too processed for my taste (the clouds in particular have an unreal appearance), but had to suffice whilst out and about.
I saw very few springbok (antidorcas marsupialis) whilst in The Kalahari, Botswana but these three animals were kind enough to pass by in single file around dusk. This part of the desert was extremely arid but springbok can exist without drinking water almost indefinitely because their diet includes succulent vegetation. Single use plastic lids as an alternative take on this week's Macro Mondays theme: Lids. Happy Macro Monday.
This is another outtake from Macro Mondays "my favorite Book" theme. In this case the book is actually the series of "Jesse Stone" novels written by Robert Parker, the creator of the "Spencer" series of books. In these, Jesse Stone is an alcoholic cop fired from the LA police who somehow finds himself as Chief of Police in a fictional small town near Boston (and there is a sinister reason he was hired, which he thwarts, of course).
Scotch was his drink of choice, so this image is is of an actuall glass of a nice single malt scotch in front of some books. The visible book is actually called "Bootlegger", whioch this could also represent. It is written by Clive Cussler and features a "Van Dorn" detective (fictionalized version of the Pinkertons) who in this case captures some bootleggers during prohibition. Clive Cussler is another favorite author, obviously :).
