The ash box of Simpelveld
In December 1930, miner Andreas Wiertz from Simpelveld made a special find on his land at the Stampstraat in Simpelveld: three sandstone ash boxes. Two of the three ash boxes had already been plundered, but the third ash box still contained some grave goods and cremation remains.
'The Simpelveld ash box' was a find of national importance; it is the only ash box found in the Netherlands that is decorated inside with reliefs. These decorations give a good idea of the interior of a Roman gentleman's farm. Archaeologists dated the ash box to the period 125-225 AD. The original coffin is in the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden.
The stone coffin is not a sarcophagus. The Romans cremated their dead and interred the ashes in a tomb with epitaphs. Anything that went into the grave with them would be needed by the dead in the afterlife. The stone coffin with lid symbolized the stone house in which the deceased had lived during his earthly life. The ash box of Simpelveld was probably the tomb of a wealthy Roman or Gallo-Roman lady. She is also depicted in the relief of the coffin.
The coffin, like other ash boxes, was carved from a large block of sandstone.
Did you notice that sandstone is easy to carve because of its softness and structure? So very suitable for making beautiful reliefs.
At the Railwaystation it's still all about to be on time, a coming and going of passengers rushing by, the sounds of trains, luggage and goods on the platform and shouting of railway staff. An impressive view in railway transport history as it was.
