That's in Silicon Valley, FYI. This one had an Egyptian-themed decor, undermined by the unbelievably lo-fi signage that appeared to have been printed out in a hurry on a laser printer and taped up. Every single sign in the store was like this. If you're going to do that, why bother with installing statues of Anubis and shit?
At 7:30 pm there was already a line at Border's books in Palo Alto.
Talking to an ex-Sun graphic chips designer next to me in the line I learnt that you could buy the book only at midnight. The line was to get tickets to be able to buy the book at midnight.
I love the Potter series but not THAT much!
Anyway these days I'm knee deep in Dan Simmon's "Olympos", the long awauted sequel to "Ilium", so Potter will wait a day or two.
What I found interesting was to see all these Silicon Valley folks, you find a higher percentage of engineers and scientists here than anywhere else, indulging in this celebration. There was even a whitch-dressed girl waiting in line for her ticket.
The underlying lesson I take from this phenomenon is that the crave for stories runs deeper in our psyche than any rational varnish we pour onto it.
