An old fashioned chalk emphasis over the Cake Decorator's station in the Los Gatos Whole Foods Market Bakery. Prior to this chalkboard was a regionally-produced cardboard sign reading simply, "Nice Buns". Although that wasn't incorrect, this new focus/message is more apropos.

I produced this very cool Gardner badge yesterday, I've always wanted one and printed it on my 3d Printer, just needs a bit of black paint to finish it!

Community Signage by Strata custom exterior wooden signs. www.customoutdoorwoodensigns.com . Two of these small units were mounted to two columns at either side of the entrance to this Florida condominium. The color scheme and logo was provided by the customer. These attractive, small signs are nicely set-off against the off white Stucco covered pillars to which they are mounted. Simple mounting is achieved through the use of a good grade of outdoor adhesive. Just a small dab at each corner is all that is needed to hold these signs securely to the surface.

Jack Kazanzas | Christmas Star

Department stores Ivey’s and Dickson & Ives, located directly across from each other on Orange Avenue, competed for customers all year. But in Dec. 1955, the store owners put competition aside and worked together to elevate a yellow, seven-foot star across the avenue, uniting their businesses for the holidays. The Orlando Sentinel reported a year later, “Two of Orlando’s largest department stores may brood across the avenue at each other all year long. But their combined light shines out at Christmas.”

The original star cost $2,500 and included 600 lights on a seven-foot steel frame. It was installed each year until the decline of the City’s downtown retail district in the 1960s and 1970s. Sources vary on when the star went away, but all accounts show it disappeared from Orlando’s holiday decorations until the 1980s. In 1982, local resident Jack Kazanzas began a grassroots effort, during which he raised $13,000 (in 1982 dollars) from local downtown merchants to reinstall the star.

Thanks to Kazanzas’ efforts, a new star debuted in Dec. 1984. Designed by Orlando signmaker Bob Galler, the 10 foot wide, 10 foot tall star weighed 600 lbs and had a plexiglass center. The star shone each holiday season until 1998, when City officials considered replacing it with wreaths. Kazanzas once again sprang into action, petitioning for the star and fundraising for its refurbishment.

Over time, the star evolved. In 2005, it was restored again and the plexiglass center gained a new display of lights designed by Orlando’s Cindy White. Five years later, the star was rewired and the City added 4,000 LED lights. That year, Kazanzas died at the age of 80. The City of Orlando issued a proclamation naming the star the Jack Kazanzas Christmas Star. In 2018, the star received new exterior panels, new LED lighting that changes color and intensity, and new wiring. The upgrades were estimated to reduce the star’s electric use by 86%, lowering the City’s greenhouse gas emissions. This year, the star was raised on Nov. 20, where it hangs 50 feet over Orange Avenue.

A splendidly produced colour catalogue of bronze and enamel lettering, engraved and cast nameplates, memorial tablets and plaques that is curiously absolutely anonymous with no issuing company or date shown. Printed in Birmingham by Drew & Hopwood it shows a wide variety of signs and plaques, along with their fixing methods, as well as various 'typefaces' that have been adopted for use on these signs. As well as cast lettering these 'faces could be used on engraved signs.

After a bit of research I am confident that this was issued by the Birmingham based Metalline Enamelling Company of Barr Street and this appears to be a 'first' edition as there is evidence of a second edition, very similar, but with a title page and dated to c.1951. This edition is not missing any pages and I suspect that it may have been issued with a compliments slip or such as it does contain some loose and tipped in additional copies of some pages. Birmingham was a centre of the enamelling trade that was, in many ways, a speciality of the city and the adjacent Black Country.

The 150th photo!

As guest Signmaker at the Monterey Whole Foods Market, I was asked to highlight holiday pies in particular for this 48" long hanging chalkboard at the front of the store. With my affinity towards cinnamon, I applied crimson particulate liberally.

In Saskatoon, November 16, 2013 proved to be a cold day for a March. While -8C was not barrier to outside activity in itself, it was the 30+kph wind from the E/NE that chilled as we walked, bused, biked to Midtown Plaza to gather for the march. We were relieved that the gathering place was on the West side of the all, and out of the wind. Petitions were signed! A signing table had a couple of clipboards with petition copies and “Chick” wheeled her wheelchair around cheerfully collecting signatures. The signmakers were busy, there were many signs either brought to the march or handed out for those that did not have signs. We were all pleased when the “Idle No More” banner was unfurled.
