Sunlight breaks across the rocks in Garden of the Gods, and hopefully signifies the breaking of winter's grip as well. March has been a snowy month along the Front Range, although it is typically one of the snowiest months of the year. Are we finally done with snow until next fall? Somehow I doubt it! Springtime in the Rockies - gotta love it!

- Reflection from Lions Gate Bridge

Ship going under the bridge - signifies we're almost back to Canada Place - Vancouver Port. It was a remarkable trip and I've enjoyed sharing vignettes of it with you through some of my photos.

-The Lions Gate Bridge,

A pair of cast concrete lions, designed by sculptor Charles Marega, were placed on either side of the south approach to the bridge in January, 1939.

The total length of the bridge including the north viaduct is 1,823 metres (5,890 feet). The length including approach spans is 1,517.3 m (4,978 ft), the main span alone is 473 m (1,550 ft), the tower height is 111 m (364 ft), and it has a ship's clearance of 61 m (200 ft). Prospect Point in Stanley Park offered a good high south end to the bridge, but the low flat delta land to the north required construction of the extensive North Viaduct.

The traffic volume on the bridge is 60,000 - 70,000 vehicles per day

Many thanks for you visits and kind comments.

The Smile on Saturday theme today is a reflection on the way poppies have signified a remembrance of those who have died on the battlefield to protect freedom, so I juxtaposed my photo of poppies on a photo of a cemetery in Pennsylvania with American flags next to the gravestones of American veterans.

Today I spend some quality time with Flatty, my most treasured Kookaburra. There are very few days when she does not come to visit, but today was different. Kookaburras have a special call that signified danger. Today Flatty came to the backdoor and gave the danger call. She repeated it a few times, and so I went to her.

For about ten minutes Flatty stayed, and I stood with her, she was safe from any danger while ever she was with me. Standing about 30 cm, or a foot, from her I videoed about 5 minutes of our time together. I hoped she would repeat the alarm call, but she knew she was safe with me.

When she flies away you will hear the call of another bird, this call is the "all clear" to say the danger had passed. This video is just a few clips from our time together, nothing dramatic, but precious to me, and something I'm happy to share. To me, it is a huge privilege to have such a trusting relationship with a wild bird.

While Virginia has a lot of Class 1 railroading, recent fleet standardization strategy has resulted in a lot of the same in terms of leading power. Add in cab signals on the RF&P, and you have to know where to look to find the hidden gems. NS V24, the Richmond district job to West Point, is certainly one of those trains. On a gorgeous summer morning, V24 is returning from West Point with a healthy train of box cars, crossing over the James River in Richmond with sweet EMD power. The crew of V08 will take this train to Crewe later in the evening, and interchange it to bring more cars back to Richmond. The next morning, V24 will bring it out to the mill, and the cycle will repeat. The Richmond district is currently undergoing some pretty serious MOW work, signifying that this unique line, tracing its roots to the Southern railway, is alive and well.

I'm imagining the young one's mouth open was signifying approval--Do it more!--whether there was anything audible or not.

"In some neighborhoods, shoes tied together and hanging from power lines or tree branches signify that someone has died. The shoes belong to the dead person. The reason they are hanging, legend has it, is that when the dead person's spirit returns, it will walk that high above the ground, that much closer to heaven."

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart (Basilique du Sacré-Cœur) was built between 1882 and 1914 on Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, as an atonement for the French loss in the 1870 Franco Prussian war and the sins of France since the revolution. It also signified a political division in France between secular democrats and traditional Catholics, who felt society was headed down the drain.

Montmartre has long been a site for worship, including structures built by Druids, Romans, and early Christians. It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris.

The Haarlemmerstraat in Amsterdam leads from the city centre to the Westerpark and on to the city of Haarlem, as its name signifies. Lots of interesting buildings along that street and most are clearly identified. But on a leisurely amble this morning my eye caught this pretty mural on the second floor of Haarlemmerstraat 24-26. It's obviously a depiction of Biblical Eden with Adam and Eve in the foreground. Serpents and lots of other animals are frolicking but this must have been before the Fall: no 'apple' and neither skirts of figleaves to cover 'shameful' parts.

I've searched around but haven't been able to identify the artist nor when this mural was made. Anyone out there in the know? Please get back to me!

Even though it's called leader, red brings up the rear, so to speak. It's just like previews, nicknamed trailers even though they appear before the movie (originally, they followed the movie, hence the name).

The October full moon is called the Harvest Moon as it signified the latest part of the year that American native Indians could harvest any crops before Winter set in. It was also called the Hunters Moon for those tribes whose food for the winter consisted mainly of wild animals they could kill before the snows came.

Goddess Durga represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the creation. The Sanskrit word Durga means a fort or a place that is protected and thus difficult to reach. Durga, also called Divine Mother, protects mankind from evil and misery by destroying evil forces such as selfishness, jealousy, prejudice, hatred, anger, and ego.

The worship of Goddess Durga is very popular among Hindus. She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali In the form of Parvati, She is known as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva and is the mother of Her two sons, Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughter Jyoti. There are many temples dedicated to Durga's worship in India.

In Her images, Goddess Durga is shown in a female form, wearing red clothes. She has eighteen arms, carrying many objects in Her hands. The red color symbolizes action and the red clothes signify that She is always busy destroying evil and protecting mankind from pain and suffering caused by evil forces.

The Diamond T Motor Car Company was founded in Chicago in 1905 by C. A. Tilt. Reportedly, the company name was created when Tilt’s shoe-making father fashioned a logo featuring a big “T” (for Tilt) framed by a diamond, which signified high quality.[1] The company's hood emblem on trucks was a sled dog in harness. From its beginnings manufacturing touring cars, the company later became known for its trucks. By 1967, as a subsidiary of White Motor Corporation, it was merged with Reo Motor Company to become Diamond Reo Trucks, Inc.[2]

During World War II, Diamond T produced a prototype of a heavy truck in the 980/981, a prime mover which was adapted and quickly acquired by the British Purchasing Commission for duty as a tank transporter tractor. Coupled with a Rogers trailer, the truck gave sterling service with the British Army in North Africa Campaign, where its power and rugged construction allowed the rescue of damaged tanks in the most demanding of conditions.[3] [citation needed] In addition Diamond T built the entire range of the G509 series 4 ton 6X6s, including cargo, dump, semi tractor, and wrecker trucks,[4] as well as some lighter trucks, and even G7102 half tracks.[5] Diamond T ranked 47th among United States corporations in the value of World War II military production contracts.[6] Diamond T manufactured three pickup trucks: The Model 80,201 and the Model 202. The pickups were powered by the Hercules QX-series 6-cylinder engines. The model 80 was produced from 1936 to 1938 and the Model 201 was produced from 1938 to 1949.

Commercial models

1928–1929 brought major mechanical improvements across the entire range. A closed cab with doors was introduced. All-wheel hydraulic drum brakes were used. Six-cylinder engines were available from Continental and Hercules for heavy trucks and a four-cylinder Buda powered light trucks. All trucks had geared-differential rear axles. By 1929 there were chassis load ratings (the weight of the body and payload) up to 12 tons (10,900 kg) on three axles.

1933–1935 In 1933 a new all-steel covered cab with doors and roll-up windows was introduced. In a 1935 model year style change it had been improved with a "streamlined" V-style windshield. This cab would be used on commercial and military trucks until replaced in 1951. In 1935 the trucks were also improved mechanically and new models were introduced. They developed through the rest of the 1930s. In 1935, Diamond T sold 6454 units and in 1936 it increased to 8750 trucks [8]. In 1938, Diamond T sold 4393 units and in 1939 it increased to 5412 trucks [9]. In 1940 Hercules six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines up to 118 horsepower (88 kW) were used and Cummins diesels up to 200 horsepower (150 kW) were introduced in 1940.

1940–1942 In 1940 Hercules six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines up to 118 horsepower (88 kW) were used and Cummins diesels up to 200 horsepower (150 kW) were introduced. In 1942 improved models went into production and then stopped after only 530 units for military production of tactical trucks and half-tracks.

1946–1947 Production of commercial trucks was stopped for military production in 1942. A small number of commercial trucks began to be built in 1944 and more in 1945. In 1946, the first year of full commercial production, there were five models, in 1947 there were fourteen. After World War II heavy trucks were measured by Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), the total weight of the chassis, body, and payload. In 1947 there were chassis rated from 8,000 pounds (3,600 kg) to 36,000 pounds (16,000 kg) with conventional, sleeper, and COE models. Annual model changes were discontinued and many models continued unchanged until 1950. Gasoline and diesel engines were offered by Continental, Cummins, and Hercules. Single and tandem rear axles were available in many wheelbases.

Mytikas, Porto Germeno, Aigosthena coastal line, at the foot of the mountain Cithaeron, east side of Corinthian gulf, Attica, Greece.

When Alcyone became a bird (Kingfisher in English), I imagine she came with her beloved Ceyx and settled near this coastal path. It is the path of Alcyone. The history of Alcyone is well known. Alcyone and Ceyx were a couple, so beloved, that even the gods envied their happiness and beauty, which was unparalleled. But once Ceux humorously called Alcyone as Hera and then Alcyone called the Ceyx as Zeus. The father of the gods, Zeus, was angry, when he heard his own name and the name of his wife, goddess Hera, from the mouth of this enviable couple. So he watched Ceyx and the other day caused an accident on a boat trip.

The lovely Alcyone was waiting day after day for her husband. Goddess Hera felt profound sorrow for her and the tragic fate of Ceyx. She sent her messenger Iris, goddess of the rainbow, to look for Hypnos, the god of Sleep and comforter of the afflicted, to whom was assigned the mission of gently informing Alcyone about the death of her husband. Hypnos, in his turn, was very sorrow to inform and in his turn entrusted the mission to his son Morpheus, an expert in forming visions.

Morpheus created a life-like specter of Ceyx which revealed everything to Alcyone. “My love, I am dead. I always love you”. He explained the tragic circumstances concerning the shipwreck and his death. In profound grief, Alcyone ran to the seashore beating her breasts and tearing her garments. She suddenly beheld the body of a man that had been washed ashore. Coming closer, she realized it was the body of her beloved Ceyx. After performing the last rites and unable to continue living without her husband, Alcyone threw herself into the sea and got drowned, determined to join her husband in the land of the dead.

The gods on mountain Olympus were sad and profoundly affected by the tragic fate of Alcyone and Ceyx, as well as their wonderful love for one other which not even the frosty hands of death could extinguish. In order to atone for his rash action that was responsible for this tragedy, Zeus transformed the couple into the Halcyon birds (kingfisher).

The myth lives till today between the people of my country. The Greeks even today say the phrase "halcyon days". This phrase owes its origin to this beautiful myth of Alcyone and Ceyx. According to the legend and for the fact that fathers love so much their daughters, for two weeks every January, Aeolus, father of Alcyone, calms down the winds and the waves so that Alcyone, in the form of a kingfisher bird, can safely make her nest on the beach and lay her eggs. Hence, the term "halcyon days" comes to signify a period of great peace and calm!

Mural signifies Thorold’s embracing of heritage

"Proudness and sheer delight’ in downtown Renaissance

By Paul Forsyth Niagara This Week - Thorold

Thursday, June 19, 2014

A stunning new mural that greets people entering historic Front Street is being called a powerful symbol of how Thorold is embracing its rich past as a vital part of its future.

About 100 people gathered on the street near the corner of Sullivan Avenue on Saturday morning for the unveiling of the 80-square-foot mural on a newly restored building that once housed the Welland House Hotel, in the block of buildings historically known as the Schwaller Block that was built following the great fire that consumed much of Front Street in 1866.

The mural, by local artist Catharine Mellor, depicts a horse-drawn trolley and the streetscape as it was in the late 1800s, and contains the very same building it’s now installed on.

The mural was commissioned by building owner Ross Boncore, the latest property owner to restore a historic building on Front Street as part of a major Renaissance of the downtown.

Pamela Minns, secretary-treasurer of Heritage Thorold, the city’s architectural conservation advisory committee, said Thorold is proof that heritage attracts visitors and can play a role in economic development.

Boncore said Mellor has created a lasting legacy with their mural.

Humans think we are the rulers of the world and the most important and powerful things on the planet. When one sees how small we are in comparison to the power of nature, one gains an entirely new perspective.

When entering inside a Shinto shrine, the visitor should perform a symbolic cleansing called temizu (from te “hand” and mizu “water” - water to purify the hands). This purification is considered indispensable before visiting the sacred area and it signifies the removal of evil and pollution. For the ritual, every shrine provides an ablution pavilion - chōzuya or temizuya - usually a stone basin filled with clear water, with wooden ladles.

How to properly perform temizu:

Take the ladle with your right hand, fill it with water and pour some water to rinse your left hand. Then, move the ladle to your left hand and pour water over the right hand. Now, take the ladle back into your right hand, cup the left hand, pour some water into it and use it to rinse your mouth. Finally, tip the ladle vertically to clean the handle, and replace it on the temizuya.

ABOUT THE FOUNTAIN OF WEALTH:

The Fountain of Wealth symbolizes wealth. In Chinese culture, water symbolizes wealth and life and the inward movement of water signifies the preservation of wealth for Suntec City. During certain periods of the day, the main fountain is turned off, so visitors are able to walk around a mini fountain at the center of the fountain’s base for good luck. At night, the fountain is the setting for laser performances, as well as “live” song and laser message dedications.

Black Redstart, juvenile I believe. Czech: rehek domácí. It is said that the Redstart bird is a symbol of transformation and new beginnings. The bird's presence in folklore often signifies a period of renewal and change in life.

The outstretched tongue of Kali distinguishes her from all other gods and goddesses of the Hindu pantheon. There are many goddesses who, like Kali, are naked and associated with blood and death, including Chandi, Chamunda, Bhairavi and Bhagavati, but none stick out their tongue like Kali.

The fierce and intense form of Maa Kali, with her tongue out, signifies her readiness to protect and destroy any forces that threaten the divine order and the balance of the universe.

Some things that anger Goddess Kali are: 1 Cheating other people for your selfish material needs. 2 Developing false pride and having it. Ahankaar.

Now it takes TWO rebuilt GP9's to build a train in the yard that stretches east from the Western Division headquarters. A change was taking place, signified by the presence of those blue boxcars for hauling woodchips, from Whitewood, So.Dak., to the Consolidated Paper mill in Wisconsin Rapids. Little did I know that in three years I'd be seeing them at the other end of their route. These cars used to head east from Rapid City on the line to Winona, Minn., and on to Adams, Wisc., before being sent up to "Rapids." Now they were being sent down to Chadron and east to Wisconsin via the "Cowboy." I assume that once they got into Iowa, they would head up the former Rock Island to intersect with their former routing, and east to the paper mill. By this time the C&NW was seeking to end service on the "PRC" (Pierre to Rapid City), so traffic was being diverted. Money was being poured into this end of the railroad; I recall being told that the ties were from more heavily used parts of the C&NW. They might have been too worn out for those mainlines farther east, but in better shape than the ties - or the remains of them - that were being replaced. And rock ballast was being poured into a roadbed that was badly in need of it. Things were looking good for a "Cowboy" line rehab! For now.

This design signifies honesty in the Awen’ art sculpture. It represents the herbacious vegetation that is easy to identify and includes good edible foods and medicinal plants. The pattern was inspired by wild strawberry seeds. The way the shadows appeared on the poles made it very dark with the sun at this angle. I love the bold contrast the light created.

_ The Politics and the Passion _

Some artists who design and create these murals across the country prefer to remain anonymous for obvious reasons. The process of creating a mural takes time, and while a traditional artist is safe in their own studio, the street artist has a minefield of social and political issues to address ...

‘' If these walls could talk ... " A statement animated and invigorated in the murals of Belfast "

The historical ones are brilliant especially If you don't know much about "the troubles" ( Na Trioblóidí ) and the ethno-nationalist conflict in NI during the late 20th century.

Murals or ‘murials’ as they are often wrongly labelled in the Ulster vernacular, have become one of Northern Ireland’s top tourist attractions.

The pride instilled in the production of the opposing political murals embodies the maxim repeated across Northern Ireland :

"Some gave All and All gave some". Whether Loyalist or Republican, both sides lost cherished members in defence of the crown or in defence of an autonomous Ireland.

Most mural attempt to demonstrate what the artist perceives to be the correct. They reflect the troubled history of Northern Ireland in a glaring and overwhelming fashion.

Republican murals and the Loyalist equivalents are known for exuding a more defiant and militaristic tone.Perhaps a cathartic and reactionary outlet for frustration and change.

Yet,they are an important part of the NI heritage and culture and give so much colour and vibrancy in the identity of the city.

But there’s a new kind of cultural expression in the city which is not only about the troubled past but one which is more forward looking and more positive sending out powerful messages.

“Northern Ireland's mural painting tradition dates back to 1908 and is the oldest continuous one in the world. In 1981 there was an explosion of republican murals due to the culmination of the hunger-strikes.

After the 1994 ceasefires and the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 painters in republican areas decided not to paint hooded gunmen any more. The guns are still there, but only in murals with historical or remembrance themes. They are open books of contemporary history.

An aspect of Chrysanthemum, tightly packed, a true Autumn flower, built against rain, wind and cold?

The name "chrysanthemum" is derived from the Greek words chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower)

Chrysanthemums, sometimes called mums or chrysanths, are flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae.

They are native to Asia and northeastern Europe.

Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China.

Chrysanthemums were first cultivated in China as a flowering herb as far back as the 15th century BC.

The flower was brought to the Western World in the 17th century. There are about 40 valid species and countless horticultural varieties and cultivars.

For many years, chrysanthemum signifies praise and admiration.

A chrysanthemum is considered as a noble flower of the Chinese noble class.

The tradition has continued to date and is celebrated as the Festival of Lights. Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It marks the eradication of dark shadows, negativity and doubts from our lives.

Even in winter couples come up the snow covered road to this heart-shaped tree in the Hokkaido countryside for their engagement photographs. Sadly, in winter, without full foliage and missing the happy couples, it seems to signify more of a withering or lost love.

Interestingly, the feathers around the beak are drawn forward signifying a relaxed state. A cockatoo is any of the 21 parrot species belonging to the family Cacatuidae, the only family in the superfamily Cacatuoidea. Along with the Psittacoidea (true parrots) and the Strigopoidea (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes. The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia. Cockatoos are recognisable by the prominent crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks or tail. On average they are larger than other parrots; however, the cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species, is a small bird. Cockatoos prefer to eat seeds, tubers, corms, fruit, flowers and insects. They often feed in large flocks, particularly when ground-feeding. Cockatoos are monogamous and nest in tree hollows. Some cockatoo species have been adversely affected by habitat loss, particularly from a shortage of suitable nesting hollows after large mature trees are cleared; conversely, some species have adapted well to human changes and are considered agricultural pests. 7914

This collection of headstones neatly tucked against the wall reminded me of a family of chess pieces, and I suppose they do signify the absuloute final move of the game.

I watched fascinated as a big flock of swallows alit on a tree facing into the stiff breeze until a slacking of the wind signified the presence of an oncoming thermal. Thermals were carrying small insects that the swallows dove and wheeled after having exploded off their perches en mass. Then the whole thing repeated again. Wonderful to see! Another shot of the Abbey at Whitby, or I should say what is left of what must have been a very imposing building perched way up on the cliff tops like this.

Founded in 657 AD by the Saxon King of Northumbria, Oswy (Oswiu) as Streanshalh (Streonshalh). The name Streoneshalh is thought to signify Fort Bay or Tower Bay in reference to a supposed Roman settlement or Roman Signal Station that previously existed on the site.

He appointed Lady Hilda, niece of Edwin, the first christian king of Northumbria, as Abbess. The double monastery of Benedictine monks and nuns was also home to the great Saxon poet Caedmon.

Apparently, some 'serious' photographers find the bluebell season 'controversial', but I always look forward to it. The appearance of bluebells and tree foliage signifies the end of dormancy and generates feelings of optimism about the months ahead.
