Some small local shops try to imitate more well known national chains by getting their name as close as possible without actually crossing over the line of infringement. In some cases, the name comes out kinda silly, like here. Sounds more like the name of a florist than an ice cream shop, but I like it anyway.

I can just picture the owner writing out "Dairy Queen", then having his/her "Eureka!" moment when they changed one letter to come up with their business name.

Chevron Gas Station located at 7007 San Ramon Rd. in Dublin,CA. This gas station was tastefully remodeled in January 2008 and has since been getting many more customers.

Spent some time just driving around looking for random shots while out running some errands this afternoon.

It seems like every day gas prices go up... and up... and up!!

The infamous 'Deadmans Lane' in the village of Great Baddow or Galleywood (depending on what end of the lane you're at) near the City of Chelmsford in the County of Essex (UK).

The name of this lane has caused much local social media debate over the years from where the name comes from.

I've read several theories including a gallows once sited at the end of the lane, a dead body found in a well in the 17th century which was renamed 'Deadmans Well' and two Napoleonic wars era soldiers duelling to the death during the early 19th century.

Deadmans Well is marked on modern and historical ordnance survey maps and a resident of the lane that I'd just dropped off moments before the photoshoot assured me this is the correct answer.

This for you Peter.

For all of those who want your half of the road in the middle.

In Scotland they tell you they are doing it, no surprises.

The best sign I saw, but couldn't get a photo of was

"No overtaking on blind crest."

Can you figure it out.

I was told that Poo was an actual surname and this was named for one of them. Personally, I never could quite get the smell of it out of my head.

Well not really. The sign says "Internet Taxi". The difference is a fortuitously placed telephone pole....

Apparently the owner of this construction hoarding (or some interested third party) was incensed at having their "Post no bills" signs covered up with advertising posters, so they scraped off enough poster to reveal the signs, then posted their own bills drawing attention to them.

Odd real estate sign seen in Whiting, IN. Eric posted this first, but that's because I'm having awful trouble getting recent photos onto my computer, and have been content to keep posting from my travels...Finally, photos from the ride to Pierogi Fest!

Hartselle AL ~ Main St

Its simplicity packs a punch.

Safeway located at 2520 West Harris St. in Eureka,CA. This store which opened on August 30th 1961 was managed by John Vevoda. There were 36 employees overlooked by Mr. Vevoda who was a nine year veteran with Safeway who previously managed a store located at 5th & I St. (the building has been demolished). The store which was last remodeled during the mid 1980’s is still operating as of February 2009 with few modifications. One thing worth noting is that the CircleS symbols on the exterior of this store appear to be made with glass instead of the common mosaic tiles. There have been hints that the days of this store might be coming to an end within the next two to three years as Safeway purchased the land belonging to Sherwood Florists and Nursery Center.

Prior to the 2006 fire that eventually led to the restoration of O'Rourke's Diner, the sign had fallen into disrepair.

Kmart Discount Store located at 1702 Freedom Blvd. in Freedom,CA. This store was operating under both the Kmart and Sears banners. While the discount store itself was a Kmart the garden center was decked out in Sears signs showing a distinct difference between the Kmart and Sears Garden Center. This is a great example of how poorly Kmart is operating these days with company executives struggling to come up with a legit idea on how to work with both the Sears & Kmart names...

I was feeling a bit under the weather, so didn't partake of any deep fried items, but it was fun to meet all the Flickrinos who showed up (many of whom I had not met previously)

A sign on the Kilauea Caldera floor where the Byron Ledge Trail reaches the bottom stops hikers from continuing along the path toward the Halema'uma'u Crater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. Due to the seismic and volcanic activity from episode 56 of the Kilauea volcano, some roads and trails have been closed to the public for safety reasons.

Schnackenberg's Luncheonette, 1110 Washington Street.

Nice piece, and I love the way the whole billboard has been subverted.

Shot on Canon SX100 IS running CHDK. RAW converted to .DNG with DNG4PS and then processed in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop. NR with Noiseware Pro and I added the Topaz Adjust "filter" on a layer.

I can do this workflow (with DNG4PS and .DNG files) now because I have a new laptop. My desktop is 64 bit and apparently DNG4PS is only compatible with 32 bit systems. So I was converting to .TIF with Fastone on the desktop, but .DNGs seemed better to me, that was what I originally did when I first learned about CHDK in China.

Anyway, long story short, this looks ugly on the screen of my desktop, so it sems like for the best quality I'll need to convert to .DNG on my laptop and then transfer it to the desktop to do all the other PP. Fat chance of that happening, it's a pain in the butt, and I already have all my China pictures converted to .TIF and ready to go from there.

Any new RAW files I shoot on the Canon cameras with CHDK will go through the .DNG workflow.

I want DNG4PS on my 64 bit system!

or a small camera that just does shoot RAW without having to "hack" it and all of that...and no I won't pay 500 dollars for it! And of course it would be best if it was a Nikon.

The plaque reminding us of the location and esixtance of the Marshalsea Prison is on the outside of the only prison wall still standing. It can be seen in St George's old Churchyard, to the north of Tabbard Street and just off Borough High Street.
