- Keefer Lake, Ontario, Canada -

Like many members of the Rails family (Rallidae), Rufous-sided Crake can be hard to see even though it is fairly common and widespread throughout its range which encompasses much of South America with appropriate habitat. This bird was observed at a stake-out in a private sanctuary on the lower part of the productive Manu Road in Peru. (This is an individual of the melanophaius subspecies, which has a dark forehead, whereas members of the species found in most of Peru have a cinnamon-coloured forehead.)

All the effort trekking up the hills paid off with the amazing view.

Red lilies in the garden. Nice memory :-)

Wer stützt hier wen, die Blume das Blatt, oder umgekehrt. Vielleicht beruht es ja auch Gegenseitigkeit.

People don't like to walk shoulder to shoulder. Plants care less about that.

Have a great day everyone

When they've all had their quarrels and parted,

We'll be the same as we started,

Just travelin' along,

Singing a song,

Side by side.

The pink colour of the inner petals is often hard to see, so this is why I chose a side view of this lovely blossom. This is one of my favourites types of peony and I can hardly wait to see them in another four months or thereabouts.

Thank you for your visits and comments, they're all greatly appreciated. Have a great day!

♂ Diglossa albilatera

(White-sided Flowerpiercer / Pincha flor)

12 cm (4.7 in). The male White-sided Flowerpiercer is all black with white tufts on the sides. The female is a uniformly rich brown with white tufts on the sides.

The White-sided Flowerpiercer (Diglossa albilatera) is a species of bird in the Thraupidae family. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and heavily degraded former forest at altitudes between at least 1800 and 2800 m.

Duntulmn Castle, Trotternish peninsula, Isle of Skye

How often do we Togs say to always keep an eye on what's going on behind us when shooting? Well whilst not a 'main course' this pic was what I thought was a lovely 'side dish'. In between shooting Duntulm castle I glanced behind me and saw the morning light striking some small islands off to the west of the coast with the hint of a rainbow. Unfortunately the rainbow never grew bigger - guess I was in the wrong position.

It's a shot that will not appeal to the masses but I just thought it made a tasty morsel.

Another shot from our recent trip to the Langdales. I quite like the way the moody cloud almost mirrors Side Pike.

FP Explore #27, June 13, 2009. Thank you every one.

Another view of the diminutive Pygmy Owl. When I first saw this owl I was distracted by the white feather on its beak. But now I think it may tell a story. Perhaps owl had recently eaten and was preening just before he flew down to where we photographed him. The small white feather adds a note of interest to the image.

I took a road trip last week in search of some warbler species that aren't common in my area. This Chestnut-sided Warbler was one of the species I hoped to get a look at.
