where the magic happens

Late afternoon reflections of old industrial buildings on Regent’s Canal in the Hoxton/Shoreditch area of London. The ad for “Ron’s Eel and Shell Fish” is an art installation from Bob & Roberta Smith. It’s for a project called “Shop Local” which is inspired by the advertising signs painted in the area during the 19th century and is a tribute to the local businesses that maintain their individuality in the face of an economy that is increasingly dominated by mega-corporations and usually offers a homogenised shopping experience.

Old-school signs and facade of the New Paris Shop in downtown Amsterdam, New York. This dress shop has been in business for over 70 years.

Picture taken inside a major retailer’s last day in business. As I was making this image, the storewide annoucement said, “This store will be closing in 45 minutes. Everything is 90% off.” As I walked around the empty space, I couldn’t help but think of all the people who ever worked there, and the remaining employees, who were going to lose their jobs in 45 minutes.
