The Earth has a number of shields that make life on it possible, and those shields are also remarkably beautiful (see the galaxy shot posted earlier). Here the aurora display was very weak. A constant, predictable flow circumnavigating the magnetic north.

A shield bug on pieris, taken with my trusty compact. Nice to see the insects returning to my garden again.

I haven't identified this shield bug yet, but I just love these strange little creatures. I saw several on holiday in Dorset recently.

A tiny green shield bug.

So at last I can reveal the shield generator! However I have a confession: It's only half a shield generator. And at that, the two rings I have built are only finished on one side. It will take many more Bricklink orders to complete. I added some flames to suggest the empire at in the middle of destroying it! I hope you enjoy what I've done so far. I'll be displaying it at a show in Ireland next weekend.

There are times when I just shut out lots of things. Especially when I am unwell. I don't have physical activity to turn to and I'm too tired to "fake it" with the outside world. Then it's just me, music and all the various muses in my head.

Sometimes, just sometimes "I wake up, it's a bad dream, no one on my side; I was fighting but I just feel too tired to be fighting ..." When that happens, I put up the shield. If there is nothing positive, then I shut out the negative. I know the people who care are my silent pillars of strength. They are there. Just knowing that is enough. The Darkness is not overwhelming; I can still breathe ... Sort of. But it's lurking. Just the awareness that The Black Dog Bitch is still hanging around is enough. I've learnt that I can never out-run her - she can run anybody down.

Awareness alone is like a huge weapon.

In the background is Tynemouth; the setting for many scenes in the Vera TV series. If you believed what you saw on TV, you'd think Tynemouth was a hotbed of crime. Obviously, I couldn't possibly comment.

A Eurygaster maura. Thanks Tim McMental for the identification.

A Battalion of Spearmen struggle to defend their faction's territory and are spread thin between the opposing armies and unruly population.

In other news, I bought myself a new camera! It's a DSLR, and is a huge step up from my previous one. Expect a better quality picture from me every time.

Inspired by LCC in general.

"Strobilanthes dyeriana (Persian shield) is a tropical plant native to Myanmar. It is grown for its dark green foliage with bright, metallic-purple stripes radiating outward from the central leaf vein. In proper conditions, it will also produce pale purple flowers. Persian Shield grows best outdoors in USDA zones 9 and 10, although it can survive in other zones as a houseplant given sufficient temperature, soil moisture and humidity. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit."

Captain America's shield is physically indestructible under normal conditions; while cosmic and godly opponents have broken his shield, the shield proves strong enough to absorb Hulk's strength, and repel an attack from Thor's mystical hammer Mjölnir without any visible damage, and in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the shield is also shown to be able to cushion falls from great heights. Cap's Shield is also able to absorb all kinetic energy and transfers very little energy from each impact, meaning Captain America does not feel recoil or transferred impact forces from blocking attacks. These physical properties also means the shield can bounce off of most smooth surfaces, ricocheting multiple times with minimal loss in aerodynamic stability or velocity.

You can see Captain America, and his shield, at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in New York's Times Square. It's a great place to visit for locals and tourists alike!

The lakes of the Canadian Shield are beyond compare. These craggy lakes, often surrounded by sheer rock cliffs, are usually clear as glass. I have many fond memories of paddling around them in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in years past.

In the miles that lie between Dryden and Kenora (formerly Rat Portage), Ont., CP's Ignace Subdivision follows the shores of a dozen or so of these lakes. This particular one is known as Narrow Lake, though the nearest railroad location is Hawk Lake, the western edge of a stretch of double track. Train 421, a Toronto-Winnipeg manifest train, is about 25 miles from the terminal at Kenora behind a trio of big GEs. Though it's close to peak of fall color, the summer's drought has muted the fall's palette.
