During my last visit to London I tried to get a freight traon on photo near Shepherd’s Bush, just besides the enormous Westfield shopping mall. However due to some bad luck I didn’t get a decent picture at that time. Right away when I was there I booked another trip and at the end of august I left for London once again. On the 2nd of september I finally got a chance in the afternoon to go there. During most of my trip it was quite cloudy. However when the 6O85 from Thorney Mill towards Grain approached I had less than a minute of sunshine. One of the few photo’s with direct sunlight those few days was made right then and there. Exactly the opposite of the previous trip.
'Slim Jim' Crompton, 33 207 'Jim Martin' hauls the ECS of the 'Royal Windsor Steam Express' out of Shepherds Bush early on a Tuesday Morning, bound for London Victoria. Steam Locomotive B1 'Mayflower' is on the rear.
I'd gotten up at 5.50am (the exif data says this time on the photo but my camera hasn't changed to BST) to get to this spot. But despite the sun coming up behind me the lineside vegetation had grown considerably at this location meaning the shadows were still long. I was tempted to go down to 'Kenny O' a few hundred yards away but then decided to stay put. At least Jim Martin was putting in a spirted performance!
This is the closest I will ever get to a selfie. I had to include myself (extreme left) or crop out part of the mirror, which I think would have been worse.
ADH45047 YX62FTF seen at Putney Bridge working on route 220 towards Willesden Junction.
It's a quiet morning before the rush hour so shots like these are possible albeit in the northbound direction. Though the other side in the afternoon is near impossible as nowadays is busy as ever!
The Star & Garter can be seen in the background of the shot.
Metroline VMH2569 is pictured departing Southall Town Hall for its final trip of the night whilst working on Route 95
8897 SN17MTE seen at White City Estate working school extra route 228 towards Ladbroke Grove Sainsbury's.
It was time to play catch up with the school extras, and for that morning, decided to do the closest one to me, V228 - the extra that had only been in operation since schools had re-opened from the 8th March.
The normal route is operated by Tower Transit but the extra is operated by Abellio from Armstrong Way (GW), usually one of the 195 MMCs and it only does a short 228 trip from East Acton to Ladbroke Grove Sainsbury's then a shorter return trip back to White City in the morning.
I had big plans for photographing this Railtour when, a few weeks ago, I found out it was happening. The Hastings Diesels DEMU 'Wymondham Winder' from Hastings to Norwich. It was coming up the Hastings Line before traversing the South London Line, West London Line, North London Line and then over onto the East Coast Mainline. Then onto Ely, Wymondham and into Norwich.
So traversing a few of the London Lines meant I should have some chance of a shot or two. It would mean an early start but hey ho. Then the Mrs said she wanted to go swimming in the sea in the heatwave we were having and try out her new cossie before the big holiday in September. So with the railtour coming through London early in the morning I amended my plans and said we could do both. So I went for a shot from an overbridge between Kensington Olympia and Shepherds Bush. This would mean minimal deviation and loss of time while heading to Liverpool Street and off to the Essex Coast for a day beside the seaside. With time now an issue, it was quicker for us from where we are to head east to the East coast than to head down south to the South coast.
So here is Hastings DEMU Motorcoach 1013 leading The Wymondham Winder away from Kensington Olympia, having just picked up more passengers at it's London stop. The newly restored blue and grey stock is at the rear which is a shame as I was hoping they would be leading. I'm waiting for the day when the standard gauge coaches (No.3 and 4 in this photo) are finally ditched for an authentic train of 100% Hastings Gauge stock. I also found out later today that this Railtour returned via the Great Eastern Mainline and was almost right behind our train home from Manningtree! Oh for the want of checking RTT for just a few moments on our way back!
BE37098 LG72EDR seen at White City, Wood Lane working on route 72 towards Hammersmith Bridge North Side.
Late in 2022, exiting BEs have been introduced to this route. I would've photographed the newer types (the 71 registered examples of the 235) but it was impossible to photograph them during the winter.
Fast forward to March however new BEs for the 226 have appeared on this route first. It didn't take too long for me to get a shot of one myself.
Iconic church in Uxbridge Road, West London. The trees had just had a shave so I wanted to capture the moment while it was available.
BE37010 LJ18FJN seen at East Acton working on route 72 towards Hammersmith Bridge, North Side.
The use of BYD E200s on the 72 has become common as of recent, with 1 or 2 of the 70/C1 batch of BEs appearing on the route.
Beautiful Tawny, surely largest one i've seen. "Tawny frogmouths are large, big-headed birds that are 34 – 53 cm long and can weigh up to 670 g" ("Nightjars and Their Allies" by David Holyoak)
9523 SN59AWU seen at Shepherd's Bush working on route 207 towards Hayes-by-Pass.
Much of the former 414 E400s are gone now, though 4 still remain with Abellio London with the odd one out being 9523 working at Armstrong Way either on 207 or 427 plus the occasional rail work.
When people stare at you for stopping to take a photograph like you're some sort of weirdo but it's perfectly fine for them to stop in the middle of the street to take that ugly ass selfie of theirs 😒

What is to become of all the orange paintwork on the Overground, now that all its lines have been re- branded?

Metrolines final day on route 207 today as it moves over to Abellio in the morning. In recent times, B9TLs have ruled the route in place of the omnicities they replaced. VW1819 is seen here leaving by Shepherd's Bush Station

Shepherds Bush, West London. Wrong Lens.
(A break from the Thames but the key element that draws me to the Thames is still there. I like shooting reflections at night).

(I live about 15 minutes walk from this building but I never remember to photograph it though I visit almost everyday - the library part anyway!).
*I haven't used the camera in a while so it was still in BST; I think the time should be 2122 hours
VP477 (LK03GKZ) is seen at Shepherds Bush Station while making a rare appearance on the Express Route 607 from Uxbridge. This is one of the VP's which has transferred from Willesden to Uxbridge to allow the disposal of the TP's. (07/11/15)
OA332 (J332BSH) Open Top Volvo Olympian is seen in Shepherds Bush Garage, during the first garage open day in London for 2016. This was recently made open top and painted into the new United Transit livery. (21/05/16)
GBRF 50 007 'Hercules' pulls away from a signal check at Kensington Olympia on a Class 50 Alliance railtour. On this date I'd seen a couple of railtours going via the West London Line on RTT so I ventured down to Shepherds Bush to check them out. I was pleased to see a 50 on the front of this one! A Southern 377 has just by in the opposite direction in the distance.
