Shearers wear special shoes made of felted material. They don't slip, are flat so they can balance, and are build like slippers so they can roll their feet in any direction as they hold the sheep with their legs.

Sheep act so silly after they get sheared, like they don't know who they are anymore. They all go around sniffing each other and butting heads.

Some of the interesting bits and bobs in this lovely sheepy barn. Quite cramped to get it all in, so this is a pano from 4 shots.

Galbiati Group has built and constructed large-sized crop shear drives. The figure shows a crop shear drive with 1,600 kW at 27 rpm, max 6,000 kNm torque. Total weight of the unit exceeds 160 ton. Output gear roll with NiCrMo steel ring, twin helical teething with ISO-DIN quality finish, 6,000 + 600 mm wide, 32 m, outer diameter 3 m, total weight about 40,000 kg.

Tom Stanley shears for us this fall. He uses an overhead shear and moves along fairly quickly. October 28, 2011. We bumped our fall shearing up a month this year in an effort to give the sheep a good month of growing fleece before winter sets in. HaHa.

While most folks probably had a lazy Sunday it was all go at Crowther's farm above Diggle. The 4 shearers worked non stop, about 3 or 4 minutes to shear a ewe, backed up with people who moved the sheep, folded and bagged the wool, and dipped the sheep afterwards.

Shearing started on Friday and around 700 sheep get sheared each day.

Was great to watch and thanks to the Crowther's for allowing me to take some photos.

Seen here in North Yorkshire in a delightful setting is a nearside view of this brand new to Shearings 15M 6 wheel Setra. It is powered by a Mercedes engine. BF10YCV looks stunning in the new "stenning" devised livery.

Shearing away the "seconds" on an alpaca (or was this one a llama?). The "blanket" is the top/back hair while "seconds" refers to the belly and upper thighs/hips.
