This 1.25" Common Periwinkle (Littorina littorea) has a smooth surface, and is sometimes striped as shown here. You can also see the barnacle cirri actively feeding. The periwinkle snail is a member of the Mollusks. The Barnacles, surprisingly, are members of the Arthropods, along with crabs and distant insects. The barnacles reach their hand-like cirri out into the water and grab what comes by. I was told by an authority at UNH that Barnacles, not being able to move, have the longest penis in the animal kingdom. These are likely the Ivory Barnacle (Balanus eburneus) or the Northern Rock Barnacle (Balanus balanoides). which grow no more than an inch. This image was captured in Mid Maine, USA.
