Teaching at 10 this morning so decided to get up at 6 and if there was no mist I'd take a cycle ride down to Ham Wall - only 3 miles to the first viewing platform from where I live.
Lots on offer highlights of which were 2 cracking male Garganey in front of the Tor View hide, they came and went throughout the morning, booming bitterns and a fly-by bittern which would have been perfect for photographers had we all been facing east rather than west (Thalia and Brian nice to see you both on such a lovely morning).
The time comes when I have to cycle back to get ready for class and just as I start on the main track a Barn Owl floats over the path. I manage to get a couple of distant shots (effective in the setting though) and when it's out of sight I carry on. Decided to stop at the 2nd viewing platform as you never know and a couple of alarm calls gave the bird away heading along the canal towards me. What a delight to see - 9.15am and 20 metres or so away. There are some wildlife moments when I literally can't believe my luck and it's a truly exciting moment - this was one.
Oh and doing some gardening work this afternoon I saw a Holly Blue and an Orange-tip - get in!
Can go Large in Lightbox - anymore than that and it loses quality.
I believe that this is a Wedge-shaped Beetle. Photographed in Maryland.
A single image, shot hand held. Canon 80D, Canon MPE macro lens, Canon twin macro flash. Aperture f/11, shutter speed 1/250, ISO 400, flash set to 1/16th power.
I started out Arachtober with this fellow, now I shall end with him. Hopefully next year I'll have more, and more of a variety, to post. This assumes that I'll still be physically able to take photos . . .
Happy Arachtober 30!
Thanks for Viewing.

De trompetbloem (Campsis radicans) een echte blikvanger in de tuin. De lange ranken van deze klimheester zijn in augustus-september overladen met grote dieprode, trompetvormige bloemen.

The trumpet flower (Campsis radicans) is a real eye-catcher in the garden. The long tendrils of this climbing shrub are overloaded in August-September with large deep-red, trumpet-shaped flowers.
Flat on my back to take this shot...
Leucojum aestivum is a perennial bulbous plant, generally 35–60 cm tall, but some forms reach 90 cm. Its leaves, which are well developed at the time of flowering, are strap-shaped, 5–20 mm wide, reaching to about the same height as the flowers. The flowering stem (scape) is hollow and has wings with translucent margins. The pendant flowers appear in late spring and are borne in umbels of usually three to five, sometimes as many as seven. The flower stalks (pedicels are of different lengths, 25–70 mm long. The flowers are about 3–4 cm in diameter and have six white tepals, each with a greenish mark just below the tip. The black seeds are 5–7 mm long.
After flowering, the fruits develop flotation chambers but remain attached to the stem. In England, it has been recorded that flooding causes the stems to break and the fruits to be carried downstream and stranded in river debris or on flood-plains. The bulbs can also be transported during heavy floods and deposited on river banks. (Wikipedia)

Origami Tulip-shaped Pocket designed by Ayako Kawate. This is a nice model for giving something smal, like a love-note or a ring or some candy. I like the the abstractness of it ;-))

And now? Off to the airport, again. Hopefully this trip does not take all blasted day. See you from the east coat later tonight.
This isolated hexagonal apartment block by modernist architect Puig i Cadafalch owes its nickname, Casa de les Punxes (house of the tips), to the needles of its six towers, shaped like a witch's hat.
I thought I might be being watched in the garden but never suspected a nosey tomato 👃🍅 😂
I took this tomato off one of my outdoor plants this morning, first of the crop. Could it be ahead by a nose 😝
Never seen that before !
